Folks, I hope one and all had an enjoyable holiday season and now you're ready to get back to some serious family research... ? Right. Anyway, I thought it might be a good idea to have a Hyde Co. Mailing List "ROLL CALL". There are 140 of us subscribed to the Hyde List and a roll call will allow each of us to see what family(s) the others are researching. But its up to you. To begin things, these are a few of my Hyde connections, however I do not have the time at present to do any research. Roll Call: Grandfather's: BENSON(2), BERRY, CARAWAN, DAVIS, GREEN, GURGANUS, HENDRICKS, HODGES, McGOWAN, STOTESBURY, et.al.; Grandmother's: BARTEE, CREDLE, GIBBS(3), DAILEY, FOSTER, GASKINS(?), JARVIS, JONES, McPHERSON, MARTIN, MASON, SILVESTER, WILLIAMS, etc., etc., etc. If you decide to send in your Roll Call, it would be a good idea to list your main two or three surnames in the Subject Line. Thanks for the good wishes from everyone. Your friend, John
Folks, I had intended to get this census online before the first of the year but it just wasn't in the cards. I wish to thank my ever-faithful volunteer, Sallie Gargis, for doing such a wonderful job on the typing...she's the ONLY reason this census is online today. I hope this new addition helps you with your ongoing research. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/1830CEN.HTM Kay Lynn
Hi folks, This morning I came upon a website that would be a good one to bookmark. It gives the dates each of the states were required by law to keep birth and death records. Each state varied. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tn/misc/bdreg.txt On another matter--Our webhost, John McGowan, was hospitalized this past Wednesday and it looks as if he won't be back at his computer for a while so in the future please address all queries, etc. to me at: genie12@bellsouth.net. I will attempt to get them posted in the order that I receive them. I think Hyde County has one of the best genealogical websites on the Internet but it's only because John and I have received great help from all of you. Please keep up the good work! If you have anything pertaining to Hyde County (a biography, a photograph, etc.) that you would like posted please feel free to send them to me. Warms regards to all of you, Kay Lynn
Hi folks!! Well I hope this note finds all of you in good health and that you've had a marvelous Holiday season with your families. I am looking for Helen Brooks Shaw who has information on the Brooks family from Hyde Co. Helen posted a query in 1997 but her e-mail address is no longer viable. If you see this note Helen, would you please contact me at genie12@bellsouth.net so I can put you in touch with another Brooks researcher. Kay Lynn Midgett Sheppard
To all everywhere: a blessed Christmas; and, gratitude to John for all his labor of love -- the kind of labor almost always unreimbursed -- in making us more aware of those who begat and bore us. Thank you, John, for all of us. I appreciate the help you gave me when I needed it. MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU. You are appreciated. Vivian
First, I would like to wish John and all of you on the list a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year! And to thank you for all your help this past year...I have learned much about NC...and realize how much more I still have to learn with your kind help and assistance. Do you know of anyone reserching the SERMONS family surname? Would like to make contact with a descendant, if possible. Folks, The 1860 White Co., TN Census has been transcribed and is now online: ftp://us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/xtn/white/1860/ John -----------------------------
SwanQuat@aol.com wrote: John, Thanks. I saw our cousin Edward Cahoon for the first time since the day he left Hyde after high school. I met Mike and David Boomer for the first time. Their mother, Fannie Louise (Cahoon) Boomer has a walker. And I met the family of Linwood Gray Cahoon for the first time, though the mother knew who I was. Merlin -------------- Joan and I attended the memorial service for William Cliff "Widdie" Cahoon today, at his Methodist church in Fairfax County, VA. It was a perfect service, just right. Two friends, and his son and son-in- law, spoke for a few minutes each about this quiet, non-flamboyant, strong-charactered master carpenter. At the front of the altar was a photograph of him and one of the house he was born and grew up in, the same house his mother and her brother, my Daddy, were born and grew up in. It was the Harris house at Juniper Bay, on the Swan Quarter side of the Bay canal. Grandpapa, John Henry Clay Berry, married Polly Harris, and her father Seth let them live there, and he built another house down the road for himself -- if I have the story right. William and his wife, Georgia Ann Credle Cahoon, grew up in Hyde County, as did I. He was 75; Georgia Ann is just a bit older than I am at 66. Of the three children of the marriage of Aunt Laura Berry and Uncle Clifton Cahoon, he was the middle child. His brother Roy is the eldest, and Hiatt the youngest. I am the last living of six children. Saying goodbye to brothers and sister was my fate. But I was the youngest, so the natural order of things prevailed; Roy has experienced the death of a younger sibling. I met there many folks I had not seen in many years, or never met, though I knew of them through family memories. In the hurry of our day to day lives, we tend not to pause and reflect. I now do pause, and thank God that I am blessed with a wide clan, good memories, and thanksgiving that is deeper than I have words to express. William, rest in peace. Merlin
Folks, Let us remember all who have served, in war and in peace. Please visit the Hyde County Veterans Pages: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HYDEVETS.HTM If anyone has info on someone who is not listed, please let me know. John
Tryon Palace Historic Sites & Gardens - November 8, 2001 On Thursday, Nov. 8, we shine the spotlight on one of American history's most misunderstood topics with a full day of free activities that focus on the role African Americans played in helping to preserve our nation during the Civil War. Highlights will include an encampment on the New Bern Academy's lawn by the 33rd U.S. Colored Troops of South Carolina -- our first military re-enactment ever by a group representing African American soldiers. The New Bern Academy, home to a fascinating exhibition on New Bern in the Civil War -- will be open free of charge throughout the day, and two free walking tours at will offer an in-depth look at the topic. The activities conclude with a lecture on "The Other Union Soldiers" by Dr. Steve Nelson of Delaware State University that examines the contribution of Eastern North Carolina's African American soldiers during the conflict. For a complete schedule of our Nov. 8 events, simply click on this link: http://www.tryonpalace.org/pages/eventspgs/press/c6_press3.html

Vivian, No Hyde Co. census records later than 1820 are presently online but I think the 1830 census may be our next project. The trouble with the early census records are that there were so many columns that they just feasibly wouldn't fit on one screen. That's the reason I left out a few of the minor columns in the 1820 census...I hate scrolling across several screens to get information because I always tend to lose my place. If the 1830 census goes online we'll probably use basically the same format. I'm glad that the 1820 census was of some help to you. Kay Lynn > Thank you for the 1820 Hyde Co., North Carolina census. FYI Please send replies to: Gladys Shelton mailto:ghshelton@aol.com ------------------------------------------ I am interested in any genealogical info on the Pamlico County Area. Especially the HENRY, CARAWAN, GIBBS, LUPTON surnames. Anyone with deeds, wills, census info, old photos etc.? I'd love to converse with you. I am trying now to sort out all the HENRY family that appeared in the l800 census. I think they came from Hyde Co., but who was father, who was brothers, etc. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate your info. Gladys Shelton mailto:ghshelton@aol.com
Folks, We own Kay Lynn our gratitude for her posting of the 1820 Census: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/1820CEN.HTM It involved a lot of work, believe me. I am back at work now, so keep those cards and letters (emails) coming. John
