    3. Please, folks...I could sure use some help with the following: Searching for my grgrandpa/grgrandma in 1870 Hyde Co., NC; (There are no SADLER'S in 1870 PA/MD/NJ...so feel father & son have not migrated to PA yet. William Wallace SADLER, aka Wallace SADLER, living with spouse Missouri R. WATSON, together with their new son, William R.(Riley) SADLER born 13 Jan 1869 in NC. (May be living with her family of "Watsons." Father, Samuel Gibbs Watson & mother Sarah Swindell died in Civil War). Found Missouri on 1880 Census, Lake Landing, NC with husband George H. Sermons; married in 1879. Both sets parents deceased. Family story told William Riley SADLER was born in "Germantown". I have discovered on an old NC map a town by that name on other side of Swan Quarter,(near Makelyville & Sladesville). Are there any records for that town anywhere...or am I whistling "Dixie?" Wish you all could have seen my 82 year old Daddy's face last week when I presented him with a framed photograph of the WATSON family tombstone. He had tears in his eyes! His ancestors had fought in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War...none of which he knew. Most grateful for any help or pieces of the puzzle. 1. [Fwd: HCNRCC Final Draft]
    2. John McGowan
    3. Folks, I realize that the below message doesn't deal with Hyde Genealogy or History, however I think most of you will find it of interest. I will also be posting this to the Announcement Page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/ANNOUNCE.HTM of the Hyde Co., NCGenWeb Pages. John ---------------------------------------------------- HYDE COUNTY NATURAL RESOURCE CITIZENS COMMITTEE 2375 NORTH LAKE ROAD FAIRFIELD, N.C. 27826 STATEMENT REGARDING PROPOSED NAVY OUTLYING LANDING FIELD (OLF) IN HYDE COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA AND LEGAL AND POLITICAL INTENTIONS OF THE HYDE COUNTY NATURAL RESOURCE CITIZENS COMMITTEE. (HCNRCC) Introduction: Since the early 1930’s the United States Government has utilized the land mass area of Hyde County primarily for the benefit of various fish and wildlife species. As the Government, particularly in the last several decades, has accelerated it’s land acquisition processes, the citizens and government of Hyde County have lost the ability to progress in normal fashions experienced in other parts of North Carolina and the Nation. The one characteristic of this area that has prospered due to this Federal Government incursion is the fish and wildlife resources. The proposed OLF will be counter to and defeat the abundance and variety of wildlife resources, thereby negating decades of public and private investment in the only viable resource left to Hyde County. The HCNRCC is disappointed at the failure of the United States Fish & Wildlife Service to fundamentally address this destructive proposal at an earlier date. Impact on Natural Resources: The eastern end of Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and the Mattamuskeet Farms (MF) area is the center of the historical best habitat for a host of wildlife species. This is the very area that would be destroyed as to the viability of the wildlife resource. Of particular note are migratory wetland species many of which depend solely on this habitat area for winter survival. Fighter Jet traffic would totally displace these migratory species. In addition the Alligator River Migratory Corridor would be disrupted. Further, if migratory waterfowl in particular, attempt to use their historic habitat, jet/ bird collisions are not only a concern but a tragedy that will occur. Species of Concern: While all wildlife species would be negatively impacted, there are a number of special concern herein listed. Peregrine Falcon – Recently an endangered species, this raptor in the last several years has utilized the MNWR and MF in increasing numbers in the months of September to early December. From 1 to 12 individuals have been observed in single days on MF feeding on the waterfowl using impounded areas on MF. Waterfowl will not tolerate low level Fighter Jet disturbance and certainly the private impounded areas on MF will cease to exist when the Government condemns the property. The waterfowl will leave and thus end the utilization of this habitat zone for Peregrines and other birds and animals of prey. Red Wolf – The USFWS has expended millions of taxpayer dollars in the Red Wolf Restoration Program. The MF land is the center of success of this program. Because of the mix of agricultural and natural lands on MF there is abundant food resources on the property. The wolves have not and will not thrive on purely “natural lands” due to the absence of abundant food resources. The “field edge” complex provide these resources. The wolf will be displaced even if it is able to tolerate the aberrant noise levels. They will then move into the Engelhard and Fairfield areas creating an intolerable human/wolf conflict scenario. Further, during the winter months, the wolves feed heavily on Tundra Swan that in large numbers overnight in the impounded areas. There are those that maintain that wolves do not eat birds. We consistently see wolves feeding on Swan. Tundra Swan – The eastern end of MNWR and the MF area are the central use zones of this species. Displacement of these birds to inferior habitat is unacceptable. Northern Pintail – In the last number of decades, this species has declined and there is growing concern regarding it’s long term prospects. Again, the eastern end of MNWR and MF provide the open environmental habitat acceptable to this species. The wrecking of this habitat by the proprosed OLF is unacceptable. Bald/Golden Eagles – These species utilize MF in the winter months using waterfowl as their food source. Lesser Snow Geese – The eastern end of MNWR and the MF area are the historical use area of these birds. As a matter of fact this unique species, one of only two units of which utilize the Atlantic Flyway, are totally restricted to the eastern portion of Hyde County from their arrival in October until their departure in February. The total disruption and destruction of this unique unit of Lesser Snow Geese is unacceptable. Coopers Hawk – On MF there are dozens of this species that depend on the current waterfowl resource to survive. With the establishment of the OLF these birds will disappear. There are dozens upon dozens of other species that will disappear from the OLF area. The proposed area is a unique and disappearing type of minimal human disturbance habitat that cannot be compromised. Finally, many thousands of acres of MF are enrolled in permanent or long term environmental programs including WRP, CRP, and CREP. Impact on Economic Resources: Increasingly, due to environmental laws and ownership of huge areas of Hyde County by the US Government, the ability for the County to survive is becoming increasingly questionable. If the Government continues it’s land grab here, Hyde County will be little more than a Federal “Protectorate” and not an area where citizens are allowed the freedom to pursue the ability to make a living. The natural resource base is the future of Hyde County. Destruction of key segments of private and public habitat due to the OLF will have resounding negative economic impacts that may end our existence. As stated by the Hyde County Manager, “Hyde County will be the County that was”. Taking a single additional acre off the tax books is unacceptable. By eliminating jobs and income on MF that spreads throughout this County is unacceptable. While Hyde County is small in population and dollar resources, we are blessed to have thousands of sportsmen, conservationists, and environmentalist from throughout North Carolina and the Nation who will give us the financial resources to move forward. We must act fast. The decision will be rendered in October. Action to be Taken by the HCNRCC: First we recognize and applaud the efforts of Senator Marc Basnight for his unequivocal stand opposing the OLF for Hyde County. Likewise we salute the Hyde County Board of Commissioners for their position in opposition to this proposed OLF. It is important that all those who support Mattamuskeet NWR and the tens of thousands of acres of exceptional wildlife habitat on MF and the Refuge support our efforts. You can immediately help by contacting political individuals in the State and National Government. Secondly, we need to notify the Department of the Navy of our deep concern at the destruction of such a viable and dynamic biological resource. You can do so by writing before February 8, 2002, Commander, Atlantic Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, 1510 Gilbert Street, Norfolk, Virginia 23511 Attn: Code BD32FP. To view the impact area of the OLF go to: www.efaircraft.ene.com Finally, environmental groups such as Ducks Unlimited, The Nature Conservancy, The Sierra Club, and others must know of this situation. Please use any contacts you have, and forward this document to all you know. We gratefully appreciate your time and efforts on this matter. Sincerely, HCNRCC Bill Blount Jamin Simmons John Sewell Vance Forbes Bob Hester Wilson Daughtry Jim Myers &etc.

    2. Kay M. Sheppard
    3. Folks, This evening I've posted tombstone transcriptions from 3 black Hyde Co. cemeteries. For quite some time I've felt the need to have more black records posted on the web site but time and distance has prevented me from doing this. I visited these 3 cemeteries in October 2001 and took pictures of every tombstone I could get to at that time. This does not mean that these cemeteries are complete, especially Faithful Hannah where marshy ground and a cold wind kept me from getting to 2/3 of the stones. Since I live in Tennessee and only get to Hyde Co. about every other year I am looking for volunteers who live in or near Hyde County to do some black cemetery surveys for us. If you would like to help with this project please contact me at: genie12@bellsouth.net or post a reply to the mailing list. 3. We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com Please excuse the cross postings, but we just published poorhouse information about a great many counties in NORTH CAROLINA. Our partial list of counties known to have poorhouses includes: Beaufort/Buncombe/Burke/Cabarrus/Caswell/Cleveland/Craven/Cumberland/Davidso n/Duplin/Edgecombe/Granville/Guilford/Halifax/Iredell/Johnston/Lenoir/Lincol n/Mecklenburg/Montgomery/Moore/Nash/NewHanover/Northampton/Orange/Richmond/R ockingham/Rowan/ Rutherford/Stokes/Surry/Warren/Wayne Our list of counties for which the NC State Archives has poor relief and/or poorhouse records includes: Alexander/Ashe/Bertie/Beaufort/Buncombe/Carteret/Chatham/Cherokee/Cleveland/ Craven/Currituck/Davie/Edgecombe/Granville/Guilford/Hyde/Iredell/Lincoln/Mon tgomery/Nash/NewHanover/Northampton/Orange/Pasquotank/Perquimans/Person/Polk /Rowan/Rutherford/ Sampson/Stanley/Surry/Union/Wake/Wayne/Yadkin We have provided more historical notes from the archives on the page with their holdings listed. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on NORTH CAROLINA on the table of states. If you will scroll down to the section on "Local Notes", you will find the poorhouse list; and then scrolling down to "Records", you will see the archives holdings list. These entries are marked with yellow NEW arrows. (NOTE: If you have visited the site recently, you may have to click on REFRESH on your browser to see the new information.) There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

I have several Bridk Walls which I haven't made headway with in a number of years. One concerns the parents of Rebecca Davis (c1820-c1870s), wife of William McGowan (c1814-1854). The other concerns the parents of Elizabeth "Betsy" Hodges (c1773-c1853), wife of James McGowan (c1774-1855). Anyone researching these early families, please let me know. John

Surnames that I am researching are Gray, Gaskins, Gaskill, Quidley, Ballance, Williams, Miller, Meekins, Hooper, and Styron One of my brick walls is Abner Gray who was the father of Joshua (Little Joshua) Gray. He was born cir 1775 and died before 1850. He may have had a brother named STephen. And thats about all I know of him! 1. roll call-Satterthwaite, Dunbar
    2. I am looking for information on the origin of William Satterthwaite and William Dunbar who were witnesses on the 1730s will of James Rigney. My Sattethwaites and Dunbars were in Hyde and Beaufort Counties after that. I am also looking for the parents and ancestors of a William Satterthwaite who is listed as the father of Henry Davis Satterthwaite who was in the Civil War, Beaufort Co Ploughboys. Henry's father, William Satterthwaite was dead by the 1850 census. The 1840 census has at least 3 William Satterthwaites in the Hyde/Beaufort area. William's other known sons were Jeremiah(died at Manassas in the Civil War) and Bartemus who died during the Civil War era . The Satterthwaites were in the Sidney Corners ares, the Dunbars at New Lake on Alligator Lake . Both of these locations were in Hyde, Beaufort and Tyrrell Cos as lines changed. thank you for any help. Nancy Dunbar, njdunbar@aol.com
