    1. Re: Germantown?
    2. Lynn, Germantown is in the Currituck Township area of Hyde. It is at the head of Bell Bay (I have seen it called Germantown Bay), which is the next bay west of Rose Bay. It is to the south side of US 264, between Scranton and Swan Quarter. It was the county seat of Hyde at one time. There are several old cemeteries in the area. ========= In a message dated 3/26/2002 5:22:50 PM Eastern Standard Time, lynn_harper@hotmail.com writes: > Subj: Re: Germantown? > Date: 3/26/2002 5:22:50 PM Eastern Standard Time > From: lynn_harper@hotmail.com (Lynn Harper) > To: NCHYDE-L@rootsweb.com > > > > > If a child were born in Jan 1869 in "Germantown" North Carolina, could > someone please tell me what area that is? 2. Kay M. Sheppard
    3. Hi all, Just recently I signed up for the census images that Ancestry.com has online and came across the following while searching for the Midgett family. About a month ago I received an e-mail from someone (don't remember who) that was researching a Midgett Cutrell who was born in Hyde Co. in 1808 but migrated to TN and died in Smith County. This afternoon while browsing for Midgett's in the online census records I came across the following and thought that it might pertain to the Hyde Co. Midgett Cutrell of 1808 since it's such an unusual first name. I hope someone needs this information. 3. Just wanted to let the list know that there are Confederate Army records at the National Archives in Washington, DC. Received my great-grandfathers', Wallace/William SADLER, in yesterday's post. Has anyone else requested these records? (Co.F, 33rd Reg., North Carolina Troops). It seems awfully strange to me that they replied so promptly...like they were just sitting on someone's desk waiting to be mailed to me. 2. To: Sherry Cahoon Stroud. I think you may find something if you look into the Tyrrell County records. Thomas in the 1850 census Kay sent you is in the Fairfield area, it seems. Families were on both sides of the Alligator River. If I am looking for any person in the Fairfield area, I automatically check Tyrrell. I have a Hudson line on both sides of the river. And a note on the below marriage: T. Page Rickard should be T. Page RICAUD, probably another one of the numerous French Huguenot names from Norfolk to Charleston. He was a Methodist minister who served eastern NC churches. He married Anna King in 1845 in Carteret County. He married my ancestors, Mary Montier Weston and the Rev. Charles Clary Brothers in 1884 at Aurora in Beaufort County, close to Goose Creek, where I see in the 1850 census the only Oglesby entry, spelled Ogelbury, I think. I have been working on a history researach project here at East Carolina for a year or so concerning a slave narrative from Chowan County by Allen Parker, who escaped on a Union gun boat, went to New Bern, joined the Union Navy, and after the war migrated to Worcester, Massachusetts where he later became a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. He is listed on your site with the Union sailors. You can see our website at: http://core.ecu.edu/hist/cecelskid/ You say on your site that you will post any information on any of these soldiers on a separate page linked to that soldier's name. Would you be willing to link to our site? I have seen the Allen Parker narrative on the UNC-CH web site and I've corresponded with Dr. Cecelski previously. Your site is a great addition to information on the Black in North Carolina during the Civil War. As I'm sure you've noticed, we have some of the same materials on both our sites. Also, I am County Coordinator (co-host) for the Hyde Co., NCGenWeb Pages web site. This is where I was born and partly raised. We also have a web site on the 1st & 2nd NC Union Volunteers and on the Algonkians of Coastal Carolina. John ------------------------------------------------- From: "Newman, Joyce Joines" <NEWMANJ@MAIL.ECU.EDU> To: 'John McGowan' <jmack@carolina.net> John, You've done a tremendous amount of work. I've already added links to a couple of your pages to our website. The primary sources on the Algonkian pages are a great resource. I like the internet as a way of making information available to people, and it's exciting when the individual contributions begin to make a whole. Do you live in Hyde County now? It's a beautiful area. I went over to the Swan Days Festival at Lake Mattamuskeet last year. I grew up in Wilkes County in the mountains so this area is still strange to me as land and climate. Thanks for adding us, Joyce ---------------------------------------------

Most of the African Americans mentioned in Hyde County's history are my relatives. Congratulations to all of you on doing an excellent job of researching and making our county's historical data available to the public. God bless all of you. My name is Juanita McClaud Midgette, the daughter of the late Eula Shelton McClaud, one of the founders of the present-day St. Lydia Baptist Church and a community leader. My mother initiated and sponsored many building fundraisers to build the present-day St. Lydia Baptist Church. For many years, my mother and her niece, the late Millicent Shelton Farrow, daughter of Annie Gibbs Shelton and Claudus Shelton, Sr., worked diligently and sponsored many fundraisers to collect the necessary money to build the present-day St. Lydia Baptist Church. Fundraisers included donations from friends, crab factory workers and church members, special programs, and holiday programs at our church. St. Lydia's church was well-known in the past for its fantastic Mother's Day and Easter Programs, that drew people from far and near. I recall helping my mother write poems, skits, one-act plays and lyrics that brought the audience to their feet for a standing ovation. I will always cherish and visit my family's homestead -- The McClaud House -- located at 92 St. Lydia Road. Our homestead is located next door to St. Lydia Church. I can be of any assistance in your efforts to keep Hyde County's history and St. Lydia's history updated, please feel free to ask for my assistance. I am an Information Technology/Business Teacher. My father's tombstone (Nathaniel McClaud) is relatively new, but it epitaph reads "Rest in Peace." Perhaps, it had not been delivered when pictures were taken at the St. Lydia Church Cemetery. Sheppard" <genie12@bellsouth.net> To: EULANATH@aol.com Juanita, Thank you for those kind words. It means a lot to me to have folks access the Hyde County pages and find something on their families. I've always felt that we were in need of posting more African-American records to the web page but sometimes they're hard to come by. When I returned to Hyde Co. in October 2001 for a visit I made a point of taking as many photographs as possible in the church cemeteries but the two days that I was there it was cold and blustery so I was clicking the camera as fast as possible while my husband sat in the car with the engine running. I remember very well the day I visited St. Lydia. It was a small cemetery so I did manage to take photos of most of the tombstones but some were broken or had sunk into the ground so as to make it impossible to read the inscriptions. I am enclosing the photo I took of a Nathaniel McClaud tombstone. Is this your father's or was it another Nathaniel McClaud? Was your mother buried at St. Lydia? If so, then her's must have been one of the stones I missed taking a picture of. Since I live in Tennessee it's extremely hard to get to Hyde County more than once every year or two so I have recently been talking to a girl named Bertha Spencer about going into some of the black cemeteries and taking inscriptions off the stones so I can also post them to the web page. It's been so wet and cold there that she has not ventured into the cemeteries yet but will when the weather breaks. Do you live in Hyde Co. or near it? I am looking for as many volunteers as I can get to take inscriptions in Hyde's black cemeteries. I suppose you know that in 1973 a book was published called In Memory Of which were inscriptions of all the white cemeteries but none of the black cemeteries were included. I'd like to remedy that by assistance from folks who live in or near Hyde County. If you, or anyone you know, might help with this project I'd be most appreciative. I hope you're having a wonderful Sunday morning! Kay Lynn Midgett Sheppard ================================================

There was a huge farm in Hyde County called the Jolly farm. I think it was located somewhere around Mt. Pleasant, now called Gull Rock.
