Folks, If anyone has Watson ancestors who migrated to Grainger or White Co., TN or the surrounding area, please reply to Jim 's message. His email address is below. Thanks, John --------------------------------------- Hello, I am researching Robert Watson who moved to White Co., TN from Grainger Co., TN, however, before about 1804, I have no idea where he came from. If you have any information of Robert Watson or could point me in the right direction, I would be most grateful. James E. Hargraves Elk Grove, Ca. mailto:JEH7698@aol.com
Folks, Finally, listed below are servral of the articles and reports which I have posted to the Carolina Algonkians web site within the last month. I am very pleased to finally complete posting Dr. Paul Green's Amity Site Report online. It has taken a lot to complete the work on his report and that of Dr. Paul Gardner, which I posted last month, and which I have also listed below. As you will notice on a few of the articles, some of the onsite photos are not of the best quality, although I have done my best to acquire use of the originals. If anyone has any of these photos, or additional photos from the Amity site, please share them with us. Also, if anyone is in possession of Native American artifacts found in Hyde County or the surrounding area, pottery sherds, arrowheads, etc., who would photograph them and allow us to post the photos online, please share your treasures with all of us. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to share their time and experience. Hello, Syble: Are you descended from JOSIAH SWINDELL, b. ca 1732, Albermarle, Hyde Co., NC; d. ca 1806, Hyde Co., NC m. (1) ca 1758, Hyde Co., to ESTHER BALLANCE m. (2) unknown m. (3) after 1798, Hyde Co., NC to ESTHER HARBART, b. ca 1740, Hyde Co., NC; d. ca 1810. (She was the widow of IGNATUS HARBERT who d. 1798. We believe JOSIAH was married three times, but ESTHER is he only one named . She was the widow of IGNATUS HARBERT. We don't believe she was the mother of Josiah's children because she was about 58 when her first husband died. JOSIAH's children were -- CALEB, ABRAHAM, ANNANIAS, SAMUEL, WILLIS, ROBERT, MARGET SADLER, PRISCILLA HARRIS, DELILAH, DAVID, ANN MEEKINS, and ELIZABETH FARROW. JOSIAH left a Hyde Co NC Will dated 7 May 1804, probate Aug Court 1806. His son, ABRAHAM SWINDELL and his heirs were "cut off" with "one single Shilling Starling and no more." JOSIAH was on the October 1755 Hyde County Militia List under the leadership of Captain HENRY GIBBS, Jur. His weapon was a "carbine" which is any short-barreled lightweight rifle. JOSIAH SWINDELL (also spelled SWINDAL) is on a Hyde County list of Veterans of the American Revolution (1775-1783) - Hyde County Militia, 7 Feb 1782. According to my records, ASHLEY was the son of WILLIS SWINDELL (who was the 5th son of JOSIAH) . WILLIS was b. 6 Mar 1763, Hyde Co., NC; d. 9 May 1854, age 88, buried in Madison Co., IN. The name of his wife is unknown Pvt WILLIS SWINDELL was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He appears as head of household in 1790 census, living with 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-16, 3 females under 10, and 2 females 10-16. Apparently, his wife died before the 1800 census because by the 1810 census he is again living with a female in his age group (26-45), one male under 10, one male 10-16, two females under 20, two females 10-16, and one female 16-25. At Aug Court 1801, he was appointed patroler in Capt. THOMAS DANIEL's district. My records show ASHLEY SWINDELL, second son of WILLIS, b. 6 Mar 1809, Hyde Co., NC; d. 16 Dec 1891, age 82, Wayne Co., IN. He married ANNA HENDRICKS, b. Oct 1814, NC. ASHLEY was listed as head of a family on the 1840 Census in Nettle Creek Twp., Randolph Co., IN. ANNA was a free white female, age 20 and under 30. She was still living in Wayne Co., IN in 1893 when an article regarding her son was published. CHARLES ROBERT SWINDELL was the 9th son of ASHLEY and ANNA. He was b. 3 Mar 1857, Hyde Co, NC; d. 1 Oct 1936. m. (1) 12 Oct 1890 to ELLA L. CANFIELD m. (2) 28 May 1914 to STELLA R. JULIAN, b. 25 Dec 1875; d. 16 Nov 1963 ASHLEY SWINDELL, (3rd son of CHARLES ROBERT) b. 9 Apr 1894 (also my birthday !) 1894; c. 17 Jun 1957. He married IVA REED, b. 25 Jul 1905. How does this compare to your records? I'm anxious to hear from you. I am a descendant of JOHN SWINDELL, Jr or (II) and REBECCA HARRIS. This JOHN was b. ca 1723, Albermarle Co., NC; d. after April 1775, Hyde Co. m. ca 1742, Hyde Co., to REBECCA HARRIS, b. 1726, Hyde Co., NC; d. ca 1770, Hyde Co., NC. JOHN Jr. and REBECCA nad 11 children -- JOSEPH, ISAAC Sr, JOEL, JOSIAH, JESSIE, JOB (JOBE), JOHN iii, RUTH, PRUDENCE, RACHAL and JONATHON. JOHN, Jr., was the eldest son of JOHN SWINDELL, Sr. and MARY McPHERSON. JOHN, Jr., died a short time after his father's death. His Hyde Co Will, dated 3 Apr 1775, Probate June Court, 1775, mentioned his wife, REBECCA, and his children. Son, JOEL, Sr., was to receive the house and 50-acre Plantation upon his mother's death. However, by March 1785, Rebecca had married BENJAMIN MASON. In March 1785, Rebecca and Benjamin Mason sold the Plantation to Richard Sanderson. My information on back to WILLIAM (SWANDALL) SWINDELL and IZABEL (ISABELL) HIBERTE, who came from Cheshire, Eng. is sketchy and I have found contradictions to what I have. WILLIAM was b. before 1584 in England; d. ca 1624 in Virginia. He and IZABELL were m. 10 Dec 1598 , St. Michael, Macclesfield, Cheshire, Eng. She was b. before 1590 in Cheshire, Eng; d. ca 1652 in Virginia. They had a son, THOMAS, and some records say they had a son, DANIEL, who was b. in 1640. That's impossible!. However, I think they may have had a son, DANIEL, and the DANIEL found in the records was probably a grandson. I would like to search the records in Virginia (if there are any) to find any other children. This bit of info, found by my Uncle, was interesting to me. "It is a matter of record that the first Swindell to arrive in the New World, was a THOMAS "SWINHOW" who, on 30 January 1624, is reported as having arrived on the DIANA and living in the Maine of the corporation of James City. In a listing about 1626 of the Corporation of Charles City, he held 300 acres by patent. A census taken in 1638 listed THOMAS as having been "kilt by injuns" There is no further mention of him in the early Virginia records." That's all I have time for right now. I will be interested in finding out if I have given you any help, I have some information about the brothers of JOHN, but most of our energy was been with our own line. I would like to have better information about those between our JOHN and back to WILLIAM and IZABEL. I did find the marriage information about them but don't know where to go from there. They should have had more than one child after they came to Virginia ????? Vivian Swindell DeLong vivdelong@aol.com

Folks, I regret very, very much the spam email which made it through to our mailing list today. Folks, If anyone can help with her Gibbs family query, please reply to her email address at the bottom. John ------------------------------------------ Subj: GIBBS QUERY Date: Fri, 12 Apr 2002 From: joeschuebert@mindspring.com I would very much appreciate your help concerning my family line. My ggrandfather, William GIBBS, was born in White County Georgia in 1855. His father, either Cornelius or John, was from North Carolina. The only Cornelius I could find was from the Hyde county area. Rebecca, was from North Carolina, and was the wife of either John or Cornelius. I found all three names in the Hyde county census. In the 1860 White County census, Cornelius was 30, John was 40 and Rebecca was 23. I found a John in the Hyde county 1840 census. I found a Rebecca and Cornelius in the 1850 Hyde census but no John. William GIBBS, my ggrandfather, named my grandfather Robert Thomas GIBBS (which I see both in a Hyde census). I found a Cornelius GIBBS, born in 1814 in Hyde County, but he would have been too old. Could it have been his son? In the Georgia Cherokee Land Lottery, 1838, I found three Cornelius GIBBS in Rabun County, GA. I also found a Cornelius GIBBS married to a Rebecca Decan in Habersham County, Georgia in 1831. I don't know what to think but John, Rebecca and Cornelius are all listed from North Carolina. Please help! Sincerely, Pat Schuebert mailto:joeschuebert@mindspring.com ---------------------------------------------
Folks, This morning I've just uploaded a new "School Days" web page for you to enjoy. This information and photograph were shared with all of us by Thelma Credle Fulford and Arthur Windley Carawan who came up with the idea of putting school pictures online. If any of you have other old Hyde County school pictures to share you can scan them as an e-mail attachment to either John or I and we'll be glad to post them for you. Enjoy!! Folks, Below are two emails with information on Mr. Blivens search for info on his uncle. If anyone has info on Samuel Winfield, please contact him at the below email address. Thanks, John ------------------------------------------------------------------- My great uncle was in the 79th Tank Bn and was killed on the same date as Samual Winfield. Everything that I have found out about him corresponds to info on Samual Winfield. If you have any info on him I would appreciate it if you would share it with me because I have been gathering info about my great uncle for over a year. I have sent in for his military records and if I receive anything that might help you I will send it to you when I get this info. ------------------------------------------------------------------- My great uncle's name was Jesse O'Quinn from Washington County, VA. The connection that I was hoping to gather info on was that both he and Winfield died on the same date and all the listings on Korean War KIA web sites have the same info for both of them. I was hoping by getting info on Samual Winfield would give me some info on my great uncle. My great uncle and Samual Winfield were the only two members of the 79th Tank Batallion to be killed in action and since it was on the exact date I feel certain any info on his actions in Korea would correspond to my great uncle's activities in Korea. Hi folks!! It's good to be back online again!! On Tuesday night I received an e-mail from a good friend of mine concerning his family genealogy. He apparently was asking for help and his e-mail had an attachment with it of his lineage. It all looked perfectly normal to me so I worked on it a while and resent an updated attachment back to him. On Wednesday morning he sends me another e-mail and said that it was all very strange to him but that he'd been out of town for 3 days at a funeral and had not been at home at the time the e-mail was sent to me. Little bells went off in my head then!!! Unbeknownst to him he had a worm virus on his computer which was attaching itself to everyone in his address book and sending them the same e-mail as came to my computer. In turn this worm attached itself to my address book and started sending out messages from my computer with a subject line of WASHINGTON GIBBS. I was totally flabbergasted when I started getting hundreds of bounced e-mails saying that I had a virus on my computer and that the e-mails I was sending out were not being delivered. I immediately shut down everything and unhooked everything from the CPU and took it to a computer tech. I got it back this morning...thankfully virus free and all my programs running again. Henceforth all my e-mail will be scanned for viruses BEFORE being sent and incoming e-mail will also be scanned before I open anything. I'm just so sorry all this has happened and I hope it didn't effect any of you on the Hyde County mailing list. Please hold off sending me any mail for a few days until I play "catch-up" with the 100 or so messages waiting for me when I got back online. Kay Lynn in very blustery Tennessee
