Folks, A fellow CC on the NCGenWeb shared a great email program with us called MailWasher and I thought I'd pass it along. It checks your mail from the server before you actually download it. You can, at that point, decide to accept the mail or bounce it back to the sender. Great for Spam. The URL is http://www.mailwasher.net/download.php John

Hi folks, Thanks to the generosity of Mona Marshall Prado we now have a new Bible record, an 1876 letter, and a synopsis of the Marshall family who had ties to Hyde, Beaufort and Carteret counties. I hope you all enjoy the new goodies. Sallie Gargis and I are still working on the 1870 census and she just finished typing the Lake Landing Twp. which was the largest by far of all the others. We should be on the "downhill swing" of it now. I'll let you know when I finally get it online. Meanwhile here are the links to the new data just posted last night and today. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/LETTER13.HTM http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/MARSHBIB.HTM Hope you're all having a wonderful summer so far. Folks, Please reply to Carol's email address below. John ----------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 17 Jun 2002 18:11:20 -0600 From: "Carol Shrader" <wi4k@cox.net> To: <nchyde-l@rootsweb.com> I would like to correspond with anyone who has information on the Hyde County WINFIELD / WINDFIELD families of the latter 1700's - early 1800's. I am searching for the parentage of John B. WINFIELD, born in North Carolina 1780-1790. John B. WINFIELD removed to the back country of South Carolina, where he is listed on th 1820 & 1830 Abbeville District Census. By the late 1830's deeds for him appear in Anderson Co, SC, where he is thought to have died abt. 1841. Little is know about his children, except for his son James Kennedy WINFIELD, who removed to Alabama then Mississippi, after his father's death. Yes, NCHYDE list, there is a Kay Lynn and this bratty cousin got to meet her in person! And we "somehow" managed to find stuff to talk about for hours, and yet, when my sister asked me the next day "How are we related?" I hung my head in shame, because I forgot to find out. Kay, it was great meeting you. I'm from the Ezekial Midgett Jr. line (1837 -1898); which one is yours? hugs Deanna "The bratty cousin"
Folks, As Kay Lynn may have told you, I have been offline for a week due to lightening getting my modem. What, you didn't miss me? !!! With the incredible job Kay Lynn keeps doing, its quite understandable. Yesterday, I was loaned a used 33kb modem until I can get a new one, and today another friend came over and installed it for me, which was great. However, she discovered that my video card is about gone too. It will only get 640x480 16 color. But that's the way things go..... When one thing goes out, everything else soon follows. Nonetheless, I'm back in business so send me your cards and emails. John
Folks, I've added over a 100 new delayed births to what we already have online. I'll keep entering these certificates until all 1900 of them are posted. I've now finished all of Book 10 which had 814 certificates in it. Book 11 will be next and the format was quite different than Book 10. More information was given on the delayed certificate forms starting in the mid-1950's. Some of these files (like the B's, G's, M's & S's) are going to be HUGE before I manage to get all of them posted. I know that some of you with older computers and software will be screaming at how long it takes these files to download but until I get all of the certificates in I can't divide the files into smaller ones. I promise that I'll do this as soon as the project is finished. Please be patient with me until then and give the files time to download....I don't think you'll be disappointed. I will be going to Richmond, Va. on Thursday, June 13, and will not be back at my desk until the following Tuesday. Please hold off sending any mail to me until that time. I will try to answer all correspondence in the order that I received it. Our host, John McGowan, has been offline now for several days because of lightning destroying his modem. He hasn't managed to find another one as yet so he will also be "out of pocket" until the problem is fixed. Kay Lynn
Folks, For the past 6 months or so I have been slowly typing on the nearly 1900 delayed births that are housed at the courthouse in Swan Quarter. I had originally thought I'd wait until I got the entire batch typed before posting them for public use but now I see that it's going to take quite a while to get all of them done so instead of making you wait for them I've published the 700 that I've typed so far. This site will be "under construction" until all 1900 of them are posted so keep checking back from time to time to view the newest entries. The delayed births were in chronological order but I decided to put them in alphabetical order by surname for ease of searching. You can also use the "search engine" on the Hyde Homepage since all of the delayed births had names of others on them besides the person applying for the certificate. The Delayed Births main page link is below. When you get to this page there will be an alphabetical table at the bottom of the page. Just! click on the letter of the surname you're researching. I hope you enjoy what I've done so far. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/DELAYED.HTM Kay Lynn in soggy Tennessee
Folks, Below is a query on the Bragg family. If you can help, please email Brenda at her address below. Thanks, John -------------------------------- BRAGG Family From: Brenda Lackman mailto:fel3fan@bellsouth.net Date: May 21, 2002 Hi my name is Brenda Lackman. I am searching for the correct information on the William BRAGG family. I have that William BRAGG, b. 1625 in Scotland was sold into servitude and sent to Barbados, St. Michael's Parish and he died there 1678. His widow and three sons were sent to Carteret County N.C. into domestic servitude. I am looking for the three sons and Mother. That's a start for my research. I am a descendant of Thomas BRAGG and Susan Ann BURKE. If you do not have the info, maybe you can direct me to one of the BRAGG descendants of Ocracoke to help me. Thanks so much. ----------------------------------
Folks, We have set up a new New Hyde Co. Wills & Estate Page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HYDEWILL.HTM Submit your ancestor's Will or Estate Papers to either Kay Lynn or me. The person doesn't have to have died in Hyde Co., however if they were born, lived or died in Hyde, or left family here, we will post their Will or Estate papers. If the document already exists on another web site, let me know and I will seek permission to link to that site, however we would rather have copies or transcriptions of the originals to use. Please help us with this. Your contribution is always welcome and appreciated. Thanks for helping to make your web site one of the best. John
This is my first post to the group. How do I contact Dr. Donald E. Collins who is no doubt well known to this group for his writings about the Kinston incident. ---Pitstop
Vivian, I apologize for the delay in replying to your message. A branch of my McGowan family, as well as others to which I am kin to, such as the Jarvis and Mason families, also migrated from Hyde County to Tennessee and then to Missouri. However my branch of the family bought their land and remained in Hyde County, where I was born about sixty years ago. To answer your question, yes, there is an excellant fifteen page article on the Swindell Family in Vol. VIII, No. 2, Fall, 1987, of the "HIGH TIDES" (which has been reprinted). The "High Tides", the semi-annual journal of the Hyde County Historical & Genealogical Society has been published by the Hyde Society from 1980 to Present. For the Table of Contents for the "High Tides", please see: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HITIDE.HTM Also visit the Hyde County Historical & Genealogical Society Publications Page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HCHGSPUB.HTM Although the above issue is the one which has the in depth article on the Swindells, I believe that there is information on the Swindell family contained in each and every issue of "High Tides", as well as just about every book published by the Society. The Swindells were an early and large family of Hyde County. I would also thoroughly check the Hyde Co., NCGenWeb Pages at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HYDE.HTM Please make use of our "on-site" search engine at the top of the page. You might also wish to make use of the Family History Page, on which several web sites on the Swindells are listed, at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/FAMILIES.HTM I hope this has helped. If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. John ====================================== Dear John -- How I wish we could attend the Annual Meeting. I would like to visit the area and, perhaps see some of the territory occupied by my ancestors before they migrated to Missouri, with some of them stopping in Tennesse, Kentucky, etc., along the way. My Uncle Luke Swindell, bless his heart, did spend time in North Carolina and some of the other states, gathering whatever information he could quickly find. However, his time was limited and he did the best he could. Upon his death, I was the lucky recipient of his research which included an old copy of "High Tides" which had some information about the Swindell family. There was also a picture of a grocery store that was owned by one of the Swindell family. I have compiled records and stories and pictures about our part of the family, and have included the information about other parts of the early family that Luke had documented. He was careful to get copies of such documentation -- Wills, Land transfers, Court documentation, etc. In looking through family trees posted in Family-TreeMaker and others, I find same names but the dates given are sometimes impossible. In one case, there was a "son" who was born about 40 years after his "father" died. I want to finish what I have begun, but I want my work to be as correct as possible. We live about 30 miles from the Historical Society Library in Columbia. I look at all those books and have no idea where to look. One day I searched the index of 40 or 50 books about Virginia. I found the name in two or three of them but gained no new information. I know there is probably information in their library, but I'm still only a novice and I waste a lot of time just "strolling" up one aisle and down another. It's frustrating !! The reason for this note was to find out if any of the back-issues of "High Tides" have information about the Swindell Family. If so, I would like to have the issue(s). As much as I want to, I doubt that we will be driving to North Carolina. I just had my 75th birthday and my husband will be 80 in July. If one of the children were to take pity on us, they would be on limited time. We have a genealogy library here in Jefferson City at the Secretary of State's offices, but a few years ago, a few knuckleheads pitched everything that wasn't about Missouri !! Thanks, John, for your time. Vivian Swindell DeLong 1227 South Country Club Drive Jefferson City, MO 65109 =========================================
Folks, Kay Lynn found this 1842 article in a Tennessee newspaper: SHIPWRECK The bark Astoria Mitchel, which sailed hence on the 16th of January for New York with a cargo of molasses, flour, whiskey, etc., struck on the Round shoal of Cape Hatteras on Saturday night, January 27th, at 9 o'clock and soon after beat over the breakers and at 10 sunk. The captain, crew and passengers were all saved. (The Republican (Carthage, TN) - Friday, March 4, 1842; pg. 2; column 1) ---------------------------------------------
Folks, If you can help, please reply to the below email address. Thanks, John ----------------------------------- ROBINSON / SPAIN mailto:southser@pinn.net I am researching the ROBINSONS & SPAIN families. I know that most of my relatives lived in Hyde County at one time or another. I am looking for the parents of Redding Jones ROBINSON, born 15 Feb. 1856, and his wife, Rebecca Ann SPAIN. Their son Brinson ROBINSON is my great grandfather. I believe that Redding might have been born in New Bern and that their son Brinson lived in and was buried in Aurora, NC. I hope that someone can find a connection. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
HALL / ROSE QUERY Fay Kemp mailto:FAYOBX@AOL.COM I am looking for information on Prudence ROSE who married Benjamin HALL. I do not have dates for Prudence but She and Benjamin had a son, Bart or Bartlett HALL born January 15, 1868. I will appreciate any information. Thanks.

Hi John! In doing research on the McKinney family I found an article on Hyatt J McKinney "At long last, World War II Veteran is remembered" (below site). He lives in China Grove, Rowan Co., NC. His father: Junious Thomas McKinney b. 5/8/1893 d.11/28/1946 and his mother: Xenia Selby McKinney b. 1893 d. 1986 both are from Hyde Co., NC. Junious was the son of Pimplyn Hosea McKinney and Mary T Douglass of Hyde Co., NC. The last time we e-mailed you had been in the hospital, sure hope your are doing ok now. Thank for all the great work you do on the Hyde Co. Site. Morris McKinney http://www.salisburypost.com/2001aug/082001a.htm -----------------------------------------
Folks, The Spring Meeting of the Hyde County Historical & Genealogical Society will be held on the grounds of the George Israel Watson house at "Wysocking" on "19 May at 2:30 p.m." Ernie Watson, one of the owners of the house, will be the featured speaker. Wysocking is located one mile from the US264 turnoff at Lake Landing. The house and the old family store on the grounds will be open for tours. Members and guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair for the outside meeting. The Spring issue of "High Tides" will be available for members with extra copies for sale at ten dollars. This issue will feature an article on the Watson family who arrived in Hyde from Maryland in the late 1700s. There is also information on the Watson house, the Watson store, Watson grantees and grantors in Hyde until 1850, and the story of one of the early owners of the store (Samuel Gibbs Watson) who moved to Beaufort County in 1860 after financial difficulties. Misfortune continued for some of his descendants as the article includes a murder on Christmas Eve in 1894 and a lynching which followed. The issue also continues the series on Hyde land records begun in the Fall issue of last year. YA'LL COME.
This morning I tried to send a message to Sue Cutrell Reynolds who had posted a Cutrell/Midgett query in 1999 but her e-mail address is no longer viable. I'm posting my message here on the mailing list in hopes that she and/or other researchers will have a chance to read it. Kay Lynn ----------------------- Sue, While browsing through the 1910 Williamson Co., Illinois census this morning on the Ancestry.com census images I came across this entry that I thought you might be interested in. I realize that this is not the Midgett G. Cutrell who was born in 1808 in Hyde Co., NC and married Frances "Fanny" Swan in Wilson Co., TN but it could be one of their children or grandchildren. The name is so unusual that I feel it does have something to do with the Cutrell and Midgett families that migrated from Hyde Co., NC and came into Wilson Co., TN. Several Midgett's went to southern Illinois so it's feasible that some of the Cutrell's went as well. Thought you'd like to have this for your records even though we don't know who he is as yet.
