Folks, Please reply to below email address: BRAGG Query mailto:Vikingwacko@aol.com Walt Howard August 4, 2002 Hello, My name is Walter T. HOWARD Jr. and I lived on Ocracoke in the late forties and early fifties. I have been trying to find a connection between the BRAGG family of Ocracoke and Gen. Braxton BRAGG, the Confederate general. I was wondering if any Ocracoke BRAGGS have ever made the connection?
To: Paul Flowers-- Just how are you related to each of the ones you listed? Mrs. Priscilla Harris Cochran, whose obit is on the Hyde website, was descended through her mother. On her Harris side, she is related to me. Folks, I've added about 125 new delayed births to the database recently. I am attempting to add a few each day but it's been slow going lately because of my father's health. These are a wonderful source of information so please check back from time to time to browse through the newly added ones. All of the new additions come from Book 11 and are certificate numbers 1-125 and are random surnames so you have to check each letter of the alphabet to find all of them or use the search feature found on our homepage for your particular surname. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/DELAYED.HTM Kay Lynn
I'm afraid I don't have any additional information on Catherine Mason. Jesse Cuthrell's name comes from Gowen Cuthrell's estate: "Craven County Court Sept. 1797: Amos Cuthrell adm. estate of Gower Cuthrell dec'd. Bond -- with David Gatlin and Joshua Cuthrell. James Tingle guardian to James, Jesse, Zilpha & Milly Cuthrell, orphans of Gower Cuthrell dec'd. Bond Roger Cuthrell and David Gatlin." Source: Jane Phillips; diamondg@icomnet.com; 18 Apr 01. Catherine's name comes from: CD 004, November 1994 Edition; No. Car. Marriages, Craven, NC; Screen 20 of 123: SNDX Spouse 1 SNDX Spouse 2 Date C364 CUTHRELL, Jesse M250 MASON, Catharine 06 Aug 1807 I assumed this was the Jesse Cuthrell, son of Gowen, who was a minor in 1797, but it is possible there was another Jesse Cuthrell. I haven't researched this line further. Jesse's sister, Zilpha Cuthrell, married Thomas Tingle (my line). His property was in the part of Craven Co. that later became Pamlico Co. I assume Jesse and Gowen Cuthrell also lived in this part of Craven Co. Gowen was related to the Cuthrells who came from Virginia to Hyde Co., but I'm not sure of the exact lines. Sammy A. Pierce Hobe Sound, FL
I have a Jesse Cuthrell born between 1779-1789 in Craven Co. He married Catherine Mason 6 Aug 1807 in Craven Co. I don't have any more data on him; I don't have his children. This Jesse was the son of Gowen Cuthrell, b. Bef 1766 and d. Abt 1797 in Craven Co. His siblings were James, Milly and Zilpha Cuthrell. Sammy A. Pierce Hobe Sound, FL
hello Hyde County, Benjamin is inquiring about Voliva and Cutrell in Hyde county. I have tried to help, but am without an answer to his questions. He agreed to let me forward these two letters to the list for any help you can offer. thanks, diane ----- Original Message ----- From: Bvoliva@aol.com To: diane@beaufort-county.com Sent: Thursday, July 11, 2002 12:07 AM Subject: Cutrell Family History Hello Diane, I received some estate papers from the North Carolina Archives on the Voliva line I am researching for a John Pickett Voliva who died in 1884 in Hyde County, North Carolina. These papers included a settlement of his estate by dividing it among fairly remote nephews and nieces according to what the aunts and uncles would have received. According to the court papers, there were four aunts and/or uncles involved, so the heirs were divided into four groups. I can identify three of the groups but cannot identify the group who brought the suit - Jesse Cutrell and Elizabeth Cutrell, his wife. Apparently, Elizabeth was a Voliva in descent. Do you know of a Jesse Cutrell that married a Voliva apparently in Hyde County? The Voliva's that had emigrated westward (and those in Pamlico, Beaufort, Tyrrell and Washington Counties) were ignored. Since the total value of the estate was about $140 it was not a significant oversight. Thank you. Benjamin H. Voliva bvoliva@aol.com Hello Diane, I wrote you first because you had Cutrell's in your search list. I was hoping that you knew about Jesse Cutrell and Elizabeth "Betsey" Cutrell and their possible relationship to Joseph J. Voliva. John Pickett Voliva had land in Swan Quarter Township (37-1/2 acres). He apparently was born in Tyrrell County and came to Hyde County with Joseph J. Voliva around 1820-1830. If so, he apparently never married or at least did not have children that survived him. The estate papers state than Anson S. Gibbs was the administrator. Other of Joseph J. Voliva's children came to Hyde County before him, i.e., Charles Voliva. And, his brother Elisha's children also came to Hyde County. By about 1840 to 1850, they started leaving, but obviously some stayed in Hyde County. I had not known of John Pickett Voliva other that these estate papers. Also, there is a J. P. Voliva that was the administrator for both William B. Voliva and William T. Voliva in Pamlico County. Since he was administrator after the death of John Pickett Voliva, I can be sure they are not the same person. There was a Joseph P. Voliva that served in the Confederate Army born about 1841. And finally, there is a Joseph Pickett Voliva born in 1879 for whom I know both ancestors and descendants. Do you have any Jesse Cutrell's appearing in your research? Ben Voliva bvoliva@aol.com

I am like the rest! I stand in awe at all the love and dedication all of you put into the Hyde County Web site! As much as I enjoy my trips to Hyde Co. "In Search Of" often times I find just what I want or need on the site. Hats off to all of you for your hard work. Carmen Allen Potter
Kay Lynn & Sally, What can I say that you don't already know... You're the very best, and you have helped make our Hyde County web site the very best... A web site on which anyone seeking their Hyde ancestors can come to and find many diverse records from the time our county was formed. From the time I began working on the Hyde Co., NCGenWeb Pages, my one aim was to make it a site which I would want to use to do my own family research. You and the other Hyde County volunteers and contributors have made it such a site. From all of us, THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!! John ----------------------------------
I for one applaud the entire tean that is responsible for producing what I consider the best GenWeb site on the net. From the first time I found the site, I have been in awe of the tremendous effort that all the volunteers make to bring the Hyde Co. ancestors to life. Nola nduffy@patch.net http://www.patch.net
Well folks the 1870 census has finally had the finishing touches put to it and has just been published for your viewing pleasure. If not for the perserverance of our typist extrodinaire, Sallie Gargis, this census would only be in the beginning stages. She deserves a BIGGGGGG pat on the back. Also I would like to thank my good friend, Sarah Hutcherson, for letting me use her handwritten copy of this census. Over the years it has been invaluable to me. Please read the 1870 census homepage before jumping into the census pages. There is an explanation of the column labels and I've set up a surname index with links to all the pages so it would be easier for you to find someone. If you see broken links or something that might need changing, please let me know. I hope you enjoy it and that it helps further your research! http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/1870CEN.HTM Kay Lynn
