Hello, fellow Hyde Co. genealogists! I will find myself in Atlanta for a business seminar this coming November. I plan to take advantage of the situation by flying in a week early, renting a car, and driving over to Hyde County for a visit. I doubt I will have much time for research this time 'round, but I would love to meet fellow Swindell researchers and cousins in the area. And, of course, I'll have my laptop in tow with my genealogy information nice and handy. Would anyone like to pass along some advice as to where to stay, what to see, etc.? I will only have a few days this trip, but I'm thrilled at the chance to FINALLY see Hyde County! ~Karen M. Swindell, So. Folks, The BMD Project was begun by our friend Elizabeth Harris, former State Coordinator of the NCGenWeb and Marcia Breen for North Carolina genealogists. The BMD (Births, Marriages, & Deaths) Project is a database of North Carolina vital records which are submitted by visitors to this site. There are 306 entries for Hyde County at present. The Project makes no claims as to the validity of the information submitted and reminds you that each new piece of information must be researched and proved or disproved by weight of evidence. It is always best to consult the original material for verification. To add or edit records, you must be a registered user. Registration is a simple process that takes just a few minutes. Then, you can add a new record, view records you've already submitted, or edit one of those records. You may also add a photograph to any record you've submitted. You must be a registered user to do this. The Project has had so many requests for the addition of various states to our database that they've decided to expand and include all states for all record types. USGenWeb BMD Database http://www.bmdproject.com/basic_search.php?last=&first=&state_id=33&county_id=1916 I will be placing a link to the BMD on the Hyde Home Page. John

Hi List I am new to this list and hopefully this is right list. The only information I have on my elusive Ggrandfather is that he went to America sometime in the 1870's. I have finally tracked him down in 1880. This off the online American Census. At this point he is in Hyde North carolina Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace Alfred BRADER Self M Male W 53 ENG Brick Mason ENG ENG Sarah BRADER Wife M Female W 44 ENG Keeping House ENG ENG Agnes BRADER Dau S Female W 12 ENG ENG ENG Frank H. BRADER Son S Male W 10 ENG ENG ENG Larance BRADER Dau S Female W 4 ENG Ny ENG --- Josephe BRADER Son S Male W 2 ENG Nc ENG --- They were BRADDER in other records. Larance seems to have been born in New York but other than that I have no information- didn't even know she existed. . I think she may have died after this census as there is no mention of her in 1886 when Alfred dies ( Kansas City Missouri). Joseph seems to have been born in North carolina but whethre at the 188O address I don't know. They seem to have moved to Kansas the following year as far as I can find out which isn't a lot. After Alfreds death Sarah seems to have disappeared but I don't thibk she returned to live in UK. As well as this family he had about 12 children from 1st marriage most of whom remained in UK. Any help with any information about this family would be appreciated. I think they may have been naturalized in 1875. Liz White --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. TO: Hyde & Beaufort County historians and genealogists. We need your help. The Mattamuskeet Foundation is developing a large heritage tourism park in the Ponzer Community of Hyde County that we plan to call "Machapungo Park." The name is taken from the old name for the Pungo River, which borders our 350-acre site for about 1.5 miles, and the name of the Indian Tribe living in the area during the early 1700s. Residents of the area have raised questions over the correct spelling of "Machapungo." We were aware of the variations in spellings from the start, and may settle on a different spelling before we actually open the park. We also want to erect an interpretive panel with the various spellings and references to support each. Therefore, we are researching the various spellings of the old name for the Pungo River, i.e., Machapungo, Matchapungo, Matchapunga, Machapunga, Matchpungo, etc. If you have your primary source document research in electronic format, please search on each of the above spellings and share the references with us. It will save us some time. It may work best if you simply search for "pungo" and "pungo" without clicking your "Whole Word" search preference. We are not particularly interested in secondary source spellings, unless the secondary source author cited a primary source that we can verify. We have been spelling the name of our project "Machapungo" Park since last summer when we hosted a media event and announced our plans. We have already seen that people are hesitant in pronouncing the first syllable of the name, which may suggest that we need to insert the "t" to help overcome that issue, i.e., "Match." The second syllable is interesting, since the current spelling is "Pungo" and the old spellings sometimes end in "o" and sometimes end in "a." The spelling "mach" if often pronounced "mäk." I believe that the correct pronunciation is probably "match" but would like to see the research before we change our spelling. We will be grateful for any help you will provide. Lewis C. Forrest, Ed.D., Executive Director The Mattamuskeet Foundation, Inc. 4377 Lewis Lane Road, Ayden, NC 28513 PH: 252-746-4221 FX: 252-746-4698 URL: http://www.mattamuskeet.org The Mattamuskeet Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization engaged in research and educational activities that preserve, publish, and otherwise tell the stories of the rich history and ecology of Lake Mattamuskeet and the surrounding areas of eastern North Carolina. A long-term goal is to develop heritage tourism sites in Hyde County, NC, to interpret the history and ecology of the region around Lake Mattamuskeet.
Folks, I am forwarding these messages from Nancy Dunbar. Please reply to her email address below, not to me, if you can help her. Thanks, John --------------------------------------- SATTERTHWAITE FAMILY - ROSSES POINT ??? Does anyone know where ROSSES POINT is? A 1750s deed says Rosses Point on north side of Machapungo River. Land that was originally a patent to Frederick JONES in 1705. Since I am working on the SATTERTHWAITE family and SATTERTHWAITE POINT is just south of Leechville, I am guessing that it is located there. On the west side of the Machapungo River below old Woodstock, is Satterthwaite Creek, but that is the west side not north like the deed says. Also, west of Satterthwaite Creek is Rosses Creek, but not Rosses Point. Thank you for any help of clues. Nancy Dunbar mailto:Njdunbar@aol.com ----------------------------------------------------- SATTERTHWAITE FAMILY - TARKILN CREEK I have found a TARKILN CREEK near old Woodstock on the west side of the Pungo River. I have a 1809 will for Jonathan SATTERTHWAITE. His estate was being sold and his widow bought some things; others went to neighbors and relatives, William SATTERTHWAITE, Capt. Wm. SATTERTHWAITE, Little William SATTERTHWAITE, etc. The sale took 3 days so I assume everyone was a neighbor or relative. I found another map however that had a TARKILN CREEK on the south side of Pungo River across from Leechville. Are there Tarkiln Creeks in the area. Thanks, Nancy Dunbar mailto:Njdunbar@aol.com
Folks, Other than Kay Lynn and myself, I don't know if anyone else has noticed that for the entire four and a half months of 2003, only one (1) query has been submitted to the Hyde Co., NCGenWeb Query Page! ! ! However, if anyone happens to have a Query or Surname which they would like to submit, please let Kay Lynn or I know and we will be more than glad to post your items.
