    1. Tyrrell County During Reconstruction
    2. John B. McGowan
    3. Folks, The below message is from the NCTYRRELL Mailing List. If anyone can help, please contact Jason Bell at: mailto:jason@bellovi.com If anyone has similar infirmation on Hyde or Beaufort Counties during the Civil War or Reconstruction, please contact me. Thanks, John ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Everyone, This is Jason Bell. I've communicated with many of you in the past concerning the Dillon, Wynne, Sutton and Basnight familes. I am now a second year history Ph.D. student at the University of Cincinnati, and I have decided to write my dissertation on Tyrrell County during Reconstruction. More specifically, I am writing a social history which focuses on how people of different allegiances (former Union, Confederate, Freedmen) got along together after the war. In this regard, I am searching for primary source documents written by citizens of Tyrrell County, and possibly Dare County or Washington County, between the 1850s and the 1920s. Anything would help. And of course I will cite you, and your ancestors, as a source in my dissertation. And any leads of any kind would be greatly appreciated. My address is mailto:jason@bellovi.com. Thanks in advance for your help. Sincerely, Jason ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Many of my southern relatives still live in the county. I don't know much about the family tree, just hoping that some of these Rangers were ancestors. Thanks for posting this information.

    1. HISTORIC HYDE COUNTY COURTHOUSE DEBATE
    2. John B. McGowan
    3. HISTORIC HYDE COUNTY COURTHOUSE DEBATE There will be a public hearing on 23 August 2005 at 7:00 PM at the Fire Department in Swan Quarter, NC to discuss the future of this National Register structure. One County Commissioner said that they didn't want to have to increase taxes by a million dollars just to repair the old courthouse. The million dollars figure is an estimate, but most who have inspected the building report that there isn't much needed to put it in useable shape. The rest of the government complex, badly damaged by Hurricane Isabel, will be demolished to make room for a new government building. The previous Board of Commissioners voted to keep the old courthouse and just demolish the rest of the complex and now there is a movement afoot to do just the opposite. Help us save this old building which could be used for many non-governmental events and happenings. What is the National Register for if not to protect such as this? Ellen A. Williams, Board Member, Hyde County Historical & Genealogical Society

    1. Utilizing the DAR Message Board
    2. John B. McGowan
    3. Folks, The below message was part of this weeks RootsWeb Review, which I thought you might find interesting. The link to the DAR Message Board is at the bottom of the message. John ====================================================================== Utilizing the DAR Message Board By Glenda Thompson, NSDAR Vice Chairman. VIS Committee The goal of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is to promote patriotism, historic preservation, and education. Its headquarters are located in Washington, DC and occupies an entire city block near the White House. It is the largest group of buildings owned and maintained exclusively by women. More than 836,000 women have joined the DAR since it was founded in 1890. With 168,000 members in 3,000 chapters in all 50 states and District of Columbia, it also has international chapters in Australia, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, and Untied Kingdom. Membership in the DAR honors and preserves the legacy of patriot ancestors. It is an opportunity to establish one's lineage and heritage as a descendant of a patriot of the American Revolution. The "DAR Patriot Index" records contain names of patriots (men and women) whose service from 1775-1783 has been proven for DAR membership. Would you like to know if your ancestor is listed with the NSDAR? A helpful group of organized DAR Volunteer Information Specialists (VIS) monitor the RootsWeb DAR Message Board every day and welcome lookup requests. They use the most current records as the previously published books are no longer up to date. They may be able to offer suggestions about where you might look for additional data. Include your Revolutionary War-era ancestor's first and last name, spouse's name (if known), dates of birth, death, and state of residence when posting your lookup request. You need not be interested in joining the NSDAR to request a lookup. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=topics.organizations.dar * * *
