Folks, Thanks to Sallie Gargis, the 1840 Beaufort Co., NC Census is now online at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbeafor/1840bo.htm We now have the 1790-1850 Beaufort censuses online and the 1860 census (with index) will be coming very soon. Also, thanks to one of our fellow researchers who kindly donated the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Beaufort County Census "Images" (with special permission from S-K Publications) which are all now online in the USGenWeb Archives at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/beaufort/census/1860/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/beaufort/census/1870/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/beaufort/census/1880/ These are the original images of the censuses which have been microfilmed, however, there are no indexes for these censuses at present. It is my hope that transcribing these censuses will aid researchers in the Hyde, Beaufort, & Pamlico area. John
Folks, I am forwarding this query for Linda O'Neal Furney. If you can help, please reply directly to Linda. Email address at end of query. John ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I hope that you might be able to help me. I am looking for any information on Asa O'NEAL. His father was William O'NEAL and he was born in 1792. I know that William O'NEAL owned land in Mount Pleasant around 1806, this land he left to Asa O'NEAL, who then sold it to Christopher O'NEAL. I have done hours and hours of research on this and have narrowed it down with the conclusion of two William O'NEAL's at Mount Pleasant during this time. This land was bordered by Little John PUGH and BROOKS. Asa O'NEAL's indenture to Christopher O'NEAL was witnessed by a Thomas O'NEAL. Asa O'NEAL was married (1) to Clarissa MIDGETT/MIDYETT (my line) (2) Joanne MIXON (3) Mary (__?__). There is research that William O'NEAL was married to Olivia PUGH. The only thing I could find on that was in "...In The Memory Of" that they had a daughter, Mary Christmas O'NEAL. Any Help would be appreciated. Thanks, Linda O'Neal Furney mailto:lfurney@verizon.net ----------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought all Hyde Co. researchers would like to know that John and Kay have been recognized for their great work. The following was published this month in the USGenWeb newsletter: Site Spotlights Annette Bame Peebles Hyde County, NC http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HYDE.HTM A brief visit to the site reveals the years of work that have gone into making it what it is. John McGowan and Kay Midgett Sheppard are the co-coordinators. Here are a few words from Nola, one of the ASC for NC: "The CC, John McGowan, keeps in contact with all the people on the mailing list on a regular basis and promptly responds to any and all requests for help. More importantly, he and Kay, his co-CC, truly work at transcribing every available record they can get their hands on. They don't simply ask others to submit data, they work at it. Kay almost single-handedly bought and transcribed all the death records. Both of them have Hyde Co. roots. John is active with the local Genealogical Society and subsequently is able to get a lot of support whenever someone has a question. If John does not know the answer, he will seek to find another researcher who does. I honestly think they represent what is best about the USGenWeb. Their devotion is to and for the researchers, first and foremost. They did not take a county to be a CC with the USGenWeb. They would have done the same fine job, without any affiliation, but are also proud active supporters of the USGenWeb. I first found their web page before I even knew what the USGenWeb was. Since I was working on a line that passed through Hyde Co., I asked if I might be listed on their Surname page. Not only was my listing posted promptly, John made the extra effort to contact a number of people personally that he knew might have additional information. With their help, I was able to add many names and a lot of information to my own personal database." This really is a compliment to all the researchers as well because they have helped to make the Hyde Co. GenWeb site one of the best the USGenWeb has to offer. I am sure that Beaufort Co. researchers will be singing their praises as well. If you don't find what you are looking for on the Hyde Co. site, don't forget to check Beaufort since the family names are often repeated. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbeafor/ncbeau.htm Nola
Folks, We have now published the 1830 Beaufort County Census at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbeafor/1830bo.htm As you know, many Hyde, Beaufort and Pamlico family were connected. We are now working on the 1840 and 1860 Beaufort Censuses. John
Hi Currituck Researchers-- It was brought to the attention of Ben Bateman that a small legal notice was placed on the back pages in a recent Coastland Times (Manteo, NC) newspaper that reads: NOTICE OF DISINTERMENT AND REMOVAL OF GRAVES Notice is hereby given, pursuant to N.C.G.S. 65-13, that Jeffery A. Baxter intends to disinter and remove, on or before May 13, 2006, one or more graves located on the property described as Lot 14A in Block 3, Section 2 of the Martin's Point Subdivision and as shown on plat cabinet E, slide 66 in the Dare County Registry. The headstones for the graves read as follows: 1) "In Memory Of Mary Gallop, Wife of Willis Gallop, who died October 12, 1848, Aged 73 Years," and 2) "In Memory Of Willis Gallop, who died October 20, 1848, Aged 81 Years and 21 Days." All interested persons should contact Wyatt M. Booth, Attorney at (252) 261-5055 or send inquires to P.O. Box 2, Kitty Hawk, NC 27948. This cemetery was previously located in Currituck County before Dare County took in that section of land. Ben (a descendant of Willis & Mary) took the initiative and called everyone that he knew might be interested in the plight of these graves. On Monday, May 3, the family descendants met with Roy Smith, President of the Martin's Point Association, and John Finelli who is in charge of the Martin's Point Marina. It appears that the association is in agreement with the family that Willis and Mary Gallop should NOT be disinterred. Ben and Judy Brickhouse have spent untold hours in the Currituck & Dare County courthouses looking up wills, deeds and mapping plats. It appears that although the cemetery is not mentioned in the actual property transfers, the maps are always mentioned. They copied most of what they thought to be important. Later, the mapping department for Dare County suggested that they have one map certified.... it appears that the Land Surveyor lied, had a ma! p notarized that was not accurate... but, once recorded, even if it is in error, it is valid. They downsized the cemetery from 9,338 s.f. to 468 s.f. Prior to this map being recorded, the lot at Martin's Point was not buildable... with the downsizing of the property Mr. Baxter has a buildable lot that he can sell if he subdivides. The Dare County Board of Commissioners is holding an open meeting to the public to discuss this on May 15 in Manteo and attendance of the family and friends is requested...the more in attendance, the better the chance of saving this cemetery. I hope that anyone who can attend, will attend. Otherwise, Ben has requested that you send him e-mails at b2b@visi.net to voice your displeasure at this atrocity. He will make sure that YOUR voice will be heard in this meeting through your e-mails. Time is of the essence so if you're interested in saving this cemetery let Ben know. Kay Lynn
Folks, Does anyone have proof of the origin of the surname Voliva? Your assistance will be appreciated. John
This is to inform the many of you that e-mailed me after Friday, April 7, to see how we managed during the tornados that hit our little town of Goodlettsville, TN and the neighboring towns of Hendersonville and Gallatin. I've receieved so many messages that it will be virtually impossible to answer all of you individually so I thought a post here would catch most of you. Thank the Lord we are all fine, although I spent several minutes in my mother's basement closet praying a lot. The tornado that did so much damage passed right over the top of our house and was an awesome thing to behold. I hope I never see another one in my life! After passing us it set down close to main street in Goodlettsville, skipped along to Hendersonville, then on to Gallatin where it did the most damage and 9 lives were lost....they're still looking for others. Million dollar subdivision homes were strewn about like matchsticks and cars were tossed into the air landing wherever the storm sent them--one car was found on the top of a light pole! Of course, power was lost so no calls could be received or sent. The cellular lines were jammed with so many calls that you couldn't get thru on those either. Massive clean-ups have been going on almost minutes after the tornado set down and left. The National Guard had to be called in to direct traffic and to stop loo! ters. We finally have our electricity back on and I imagine that most of it has been restored in Goodlettsville proper with the exception of the hardest hit areas. Gallatin will be months getting back to normal. I thank each of you for being concerned enough to write and ask how we were doing. I have many messages & queries in my in-box and I will try to answer them in the order they were received so please be patient with me. Kay Lynn

Folks, I just received a phone call from Kay Lynn, our co-host, informing me that there had been some really bad weather, tornados, etc., where she lives near Gallatin, Tennessee. All power there is out, so, of course, she can't communicate by email. It may be a few days before she's back online. In the meantime, if there's anything I can assist you with, please let me know. John McGowan PS - If anyone has a Query, Surname, or any files dealing with Beaufort or Hyde Co. history or genealogy, please let me know. Thanks....

Fellow Hyde Researchers, Well, another year has come and gone and we hardly know where the time went. The country has weathered some terrible natural disasters this year and we pray that none of you or your loved ones were in harms way when they occurred. John and I have tried to put new things on the Hyde website for your enjoyment this year but we would relish anything that you might have that you think would be of interest to other researchers. You can contact John at jmack@carolina.net or Kay Lynn at genie12@bellouth.net for any submissions. Our Christmas wish for all of you was summed up on a recent card that was sent to us, simply it said "May the Christmas spirit settle gently around you and your loved ones and bring you peace." MERRY CHRISTMAS to all of you! John B. McGowan and Kay Lynn Midgett Sheppard
