VANN, CIVIC LEADER Former Legislator, Dies Ahoskie. Joseph Newsome Vann died Saturday in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. He was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1935, 1937, and 1943, former chairman of the Herford County Board of Commissioners, a member of the North Carolina Water and Air Resources Commission from 1959 until 1965, an Elder and Charter Member of Ahoskie Presbyterian Church, a 1969 recipient of Ahoskie Rotary Club Recognition Award, former memer of the Board of Directors of Roanoke-Chowan Hospital and chart member of Beechwood Country Club. Vann served on the State Stream and Sanitation Committee prior to 1956. This committee was the group which first classified the rivers of North Carolina and assigned classification and water quality standards. Vann had extensively farming interests and before his retirement operated a hardware store and sawmill. A native of Hertford County, he was the husband of Mrs. Agnes Wooten Vann and son of R.Albert and Mrs. Annie Newsome Vann. Besides his widow surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Gordon W. Sweet, Atlant, GA, and Mrs. A. Pilston Godwin Jr, Raleigh; two sisters, Mrs. Claude Green, Ahoskie, and Mrs. Frank Knight, Whaleyville, VA; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held Monday in Ahoskie Presbyterian Church by the Rev. George D. Heath and the Rev. F.N. Dick. Burial was in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Ahoskie Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
