Hi Everyone, There have been so many contributions made to the Hertford site the past couple of days that it is really wonderful! Even photo's - which is really opening up a new realm of possibilities for researching this county. Guy won't be able to post additional info to the archives until this weekend, but it should be worth the wait and hope that you will keep finding records to share and send them in. Please remember in a few days to check through and search the new info that has been sent in this week. Here are a number of things that you might enjoy seeing that have been offered just since last night: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This appeared in a Roanoke-Chowan News Herald newspaper column entitled "People to Know" by James A. Bateman on February 10, 1938. One of the most respected and liked men in the Christian Harbor community is J.H. Evans, retired farmer who uses his spare time clerking in the store of his son, G.P. Evans, with whom he makes his home. Somewhat of a "cross road philospher", Mr. Evans is well versed in current events, both within and outside of his community, and is often heard to express sound and practical theories concerning many of today's problems. Joseph Henry Evans, 81, was born at the old Smith place between Ahoskie and Union, on June 25, 1857, the son of the late Joseph B. and Mary E. Baugham Evans, of Hertford County. He married Miss Maggie D. Taylor, of Christian Harbor, who died February 15, 1937. Twelve children were born of this union, nine of whom are now living. They are: Mrs. J.L. Blythe, Mrs. N.S. Hoggard, W.H. Evans and Grady P. Evans of the Christian Harbor Community; E.P. Evans of Greeleyville, S.C.; Mrs. Annie Mae Downing, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Owen and Mrs. Marguerite Fox, of Norfolk, Va.; Samuel Lee Evans of Colorado. Mr. Evans joined the Bethlehem Baptist Church 65 years ago and has been a member of the Christian Harbor Baptist Church for 40 years. He was teacher of the first men's bible class for 27 years and was ordained a deacon in 1900, being chairman of the board of deacons ever since. He was clerk of the Christian Harbor church for 18 years. He is still active in church and Sunday school work attending regularly. Mr. Evans is clerk in his son's store at Lloyd's Cross Roads. He was appointed magistrate in 1896 and held that position for six years. Despite his advanced age, Mr. Evans reads and writes without the aid of glasses and gets around like a "young man". Incidentally, he hasn't missed subscribing to the Herald since it was first established.
