Hi all, I've been asked where to stay while researching in Hertford County. A good motel that is not cheap but not too expensive is the Ahoskie Inn (252) 332-4165. It's about 20 minutes from Murfreesboro, 30 minutes from Winton, and 5 minutes from Ahoskie. It's by far the best motel in the area, which is why they can get away with charging a bit more. There are two very cheap and old motels in Ahoskie, one of which is the Tomahawk Inn and I don't remember the name of the other one. There is also a cheap old motel in Murfreesboro that I know nothing about, but I've seen. If you don't mind driving a good distance (about 45 minutes each way), I have stayed in the Motel 6 at Roanoke Rapids (252) 537-5252 and it's very inexpensive. Unlike a lot of those, that one is nice and clean, similar to the Ahoskie Inn. It also takes those coupons that you can find at Shoney's and gas stations along I-95. I also saw a Days Inn in Elizabeth City (919) 335-4316 (yes, I know that's not Murfreesboro, but there's this genealogical library, see, and lots of people who lived in Hertford came from that area originally, including mine - the Forbes). I always try to stay with family, so I can stay longer and also enjoy my family. <smile> But that's not always possible for various reasons. -Susan Lassiter Graham http://www.futuretechdesigns.com
Let me put in a little plug for another alternative for someone who would like to have the "Royal" treatment. Carol Piper, who is also an avid genealogist, and a member of this list, runs a B and B in Murfreesboro. You can contact her at: cmpiper@coastalnet.com Take care.
