Here is some info that was discussed previously on the DC List that may help you find some needed information regarding your WWI ancestors records: The cards are on film in Room 400 at the National Archives. The National Archives in DC (and all of the branches) have these WWI draft registration cards on microfilm. This is a really great resource that few people seem to know about. You do need to know where the person lived in 1917/1918 but otherwise it's pretty easy to use these films. One of the best things about the draft registration cards is that they give some information about the men's height, build, and eye and hair color, which is not something that one can generally find in other sources. They also list next of kin and often a place of work. One researcher I know found both of his grandfathers and all of his great uncles cards in a few hours one day down at the Archives. Remarkable finds for a few hours work.
