Hi Everyone, Wanted to let you know that I have volunteered to keep the Hertford RootsWeb Board and am looking forward to all of Hertford County research becoming more productive and enjoyable for everyone who has an interest in this county, its history and people. With the scarcity of records available regarding this county the sharing of what info we have can be invaluable, and collectively will create a tremendous data base for all of us to work with and preserve for future researchers. Please take a minute and share something that you know or are interested in about Hertford County here on this County List regardless of how insignificant you think it might be to someone else okay? It just might be a clue that someone else has been hunting for, or act as a catalyst that snowballs into a great find for you or others. If our ancestors had talked and written things down a few extra times we probably wouldn't have to be bothering with genealogy "walls" now - you know? <g> Here is a listing of the contact info for the NC State Archives and their holdings for Hertford County, NC - just in case it will be a help to your research. I've also sent it to the Hertford RootsWeb message Board @ http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.st ates.northcarolina.counties.hertford&m=475 We are also hoping to have the County List and the RootsWeb Board messages "gate" open soon which will link this Boards messages to the Hertford County site List group that should help with the flow of communication between the two. John F. Godwin our Hertford County site Administrator jfgodwin@adelphia.net and Guy Potts the Archives Manager gpotts1@nc.rr.com are busy making changes and keeping up with all the new info that is being donated. If you have a minute to donate something to them to use at the site please do. If you have a fact or story or link to share with everyone please check out the County site http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchertfo/ look for a contribute prompt and click! Also, there have been additional files added to the Archives this year that are not showing up with the search function just yet probably due to a back log of work for the people who index the new files for the Archives. It helps while digging around through the new info that hasn't been indexed to remember that even as elaborate as these sites have grown that most of the work is still accomplished by volunteers. Besides patience and hope are necessities with genealogy research and it gives us a chance to cultivate those skills. <g> Here is that list of the Hertford County files that are held at the NC State Archives just in case it will be a help to your research: Mail inquiries may be sent to: North Carolina State Archives Public Services Branch 4614 Mail Service Center Raleigh, N.C. 27699-4614 Physical Address 109 E. I have seen on the net that Judge B.B. Winborne wrote a history of Hertford which was published in 1906. Judge Winborne's wife was a daughter of Uriah Vaughn and his wife Sarah Rogers. Sarah Rogers is reportedly the daughter of Jonathan and Priscilla Rogers. I am interested in this family as Lewis Ezell married Nancy Rogers, daughter of Jonathan and Priscilla Rogers. Jonathan Rogers is on the 1790 census in Hertford. Priscilla is on the 1800 census. Does anyone have access to the book by Judge Winborne who could verify this information? Sandy
Hi Sandra, Page 288: ....[Col. Uriah Vaughan] (DOD January 19, 1900) ... His father was John Vaughan, of Hertford, who was a soldier in the War of 1812. His mother was Sarah Rogers, daughter of Jonathan Rogers, of this county. His paternal grandfather was William Vaughan, a continental soldier in the War of 1776. Colonel Vaughan ...married Sarah A., the daughter of Henry Deberry Jenkins, of this county, and a soldier in the War of 1812. Page: 291: ...[Doctor John Turner Eldridge]...the doctor married Alberta, the daughter of Capt. J.M.S. Rogers, of Northampton County, N.C., who was frequently in the Legislature from Northampton between 1828 and 1850. Page: 113: [A William Rogers is mentioned in "A Remarkable Criminal Trial" that was dubbed "Fudge" he was a resident of Murfreesboro of good standing, and was arrested with three other respectable men and charged with breaking and entering the home of Jethro Pender in 1818. They were ultimately found innocent and pardoned, due to the confession of a man who was imprisoned in Suffolk, VA under a death sentence. There is no mention that I can find in this book of Lewis Ezell, Nancy Rogers or Priscilla Rogers. He does mention on page 305 that his wife Nellie H. Vaughan was the fourth daughter of Col. Uriah Vaughan, of Murfreesboro. Just in case her birth order is of any interest to you. Hope this is of some help to you ~ Marianne ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sandra Sharp" <sjsharp@hctc.net> To: <NCHERTFO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 10, 2003 9:52 PM Subject: [NCHERTFO-L] Winborne/Vaughn/Rogers > I have seen on the net that Judge B.B.
