Welcome back, Susan. Great work! >>> Susan Graham <susang777@mindspring.com> 08/01/01 02:19PM >>> Hi all, I know I'll be able to make some sense of the enormous amount of information I got from my research trip to NC eventually, but right now, it's just a huge pile of paper. Meanwhile, I have some information for some people (haven't even gotten as far as figuring out what for who yet, sad to say, since I just got back two days ago from being gone almost all of three weeks on three separate trips). So here goes: DEATH CERTIFICATES: Name: Ann Mariah Lassiter, Female, White, Widowed, Date of Birth: (blank), Date of Death: Feb. 17, 1925, Age at Death: about 88, Cause of Death: Old Age, no attending physician, Birthplace: Hertford County, NC, Name & birthplace of father: Jessie Lassiter, Unknown, Maiden Name of Mother: Betsey Lassiter, Unknown, Informant: J. L. Outlaw, Aulander, NC, Place of burial: Family graveyard, Date of burial: Feb. 18, 1925, Undertaker: J. W. Herring, Aulander, NC Name: Henry Lassiter, Male, White, Married, Date of Birth: Feb. 25, 1841, Date of Death: Feb. 28, 1921, Age at Death: 80, Cause of Death: Cardio Nephritis, Chronic; Contributory Cause: Senility, Signed, S. W. Herring, Aulander, NC Name: Mary E. Lassiter, Female, White, Widowed, Date of Birth: 1836, Date of Death: Oct. 22, 1921, Age at Death: about 85, Cause of Death: Carcinoma of breast; Contributory Cause: Carcinoma of stomach, Signed, R. F. Benthall, Birthplace: St. Johns, NC, Name & birthplace of father: Joel Lassiter, NC, Maiden Name of Mother: Vasty Lassiter, NC, Informant: S. A. Saunders, Aulander, NC, Place of burial: Hertford County, Date of burial: Oct. 23, 1921, Undertaker: J. W. Herring, Aulander, NC CEMETERIES: Taylor Cemetery of Gates County Cemetery of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church near Mapleton and Murfreesboro, Hertford County Williams/Hinton Cemetery on Rd. 1106 Hinton/Henry Cemetery on Rd. 1103 Parts of a few others in Hertford County I photographed almost all of Job Cemetery, with many Lassiters, Outlaws, etc. About 150 stones, just guessing, in a field, that nobody but locals seem to know about. My great-grandmother is buried there, but she only married a Lassiter. As far as I can tell, none of the many Lassiters there are closely related to me, but some of you may have a relative there. It is right next to Aulander, NC but is in Hertford County on the old Mitchell farm off of the St. John-Aulander Rd. I suspect that many of these people worked on the Mitchell farm. My great-grandfather worked there as a supervisor for a while and that's probably why my great-grandmother was buried there, along with the fact that the Rogersons seemed to have a small plot there, and her mother was a Rogerson. I'll complete the survey in a couple of weeks when I visit for a day for a reunion. MAPS: Hertford County (and parts of Northampton and Bertie) 1863 - Conf. Army Engineers WITH NAMES OF PEOPLE WHO LIVED THERE AT THE TIME EXACTLY WHERE THEY LIVED RIGHT ON THE MAP!!!! I will be photographing this map and putting it up on the Hertford County web site for your research, too. I intend to use it to find out exactly where my ancestors lived by comparing it to the census. Bertie County 1877 - sketch, unofficial ADDED SURNAMES TO MY LIST: Dudley, Sander/Saunder, Teaster, Vinson I am also now convinced that Gregory is a valid family name until proven otherwise (have copies of old wills), but I will research the contrary version to be sure on next trip. OTHER: I found an illegitimate child as one of my ancestors, I'm pretty sure anyway, so almost got to add another surname, but that one is really going to be tricky because of the destroyed records! Speaking of destroyed records, I heard how the Hertford County courthouse got burned in the 1830's: An arsonist burned the courthouse because he had so many people after him legally. He got caught anyway because he also had legal problems in Northampton County, and it's a good thing they caught him when they did since he probably would have burned that courthouse next. Information on various Lassiters and some McGlohon/McGlaughn/McGlaughan/McGlaughon's. Many others. Specifically copied all of the information from cemeteries on Lassiters who were African American. Deeds, wills, marriages, census information, court information, photos and copies of very old documents. WHEW!!! -Susan ==== NCHERTFO Mailing List ==== Free Web space. ANY amount. ANY subject.
