    1. [NCHERTFO-L] MARSH/MASH research, Bertie, Hertford, Gates Counties
    2. Hello Everyone, I haven't posted for Gates/Hertford/Bertie Co folks anything my Marsh/Mash quest in a very long time. I am hoping to ring some bells with the following information on my Hertford Co NC>Bedford TN>Benton Co AR> Dade Co MO Marsh ancestry. I know that in Cathy Ferris' research on her Bertie Co. lines, she has come across these Marsh families as allied to her Bryans (and I'm hoping she has more than maybe found in the archives :-)) I am looking for the ancestry and other family members of GEORGE MARSH/MASH and Mary (unknown surname). George was born before 1755 and found in Hertford Co. 1790 and 1800 census, with large households both years: 1790 NC Census, Edenton District, Hertford Co. George MASH. 1 Male 16 and up; 4 Males under 16; 4 Females including head 1800 Census Hertford Co., NC MASH, George, 2 Males under 10, 1 Male over 45, 2 Females under 10, 2 Females 10-16, 1 Female 26-45, 4 Slaves No Marsh/Mash families were counted in 1810 in Hertford Co. census (according to indexes), but George's likely widow MARY MASH, over 45 years, shows up in 1820 with just likely son Michael Marsh (16 -24 years) in the household. There is also a URIAH MARSH in 1820 in Hertford Co. with several children, wife. Looking at his neighborhood's families suggest he was a probable son of George and Mary. In earlier neighboring BERTIE County NC tax lists and other records I have found a JAMES MARSH and an undoubtedly earlier GEORGE MARSH together in Captain Thomas Pugh's 1762 tax list, together buying items at an estate sale in 1783, etc. For tax list see: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/bertie/census/1762a.txt Because a James Marsh appears often in court records as witness, taking inventories, etc. and George Marsh does not show up, I am assuming that James was probably older (or maybe just a more prominent citizen). On the 1762 tax list, there is a George Marsh in the household of Aaron Ellis, whose wife CATHERINE KING BRYAN ELLIS had a daughter. Her will is here: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/bertie//wills/ellis1779.txt Catherine has identified as married to an EDMUND MARSH, who may have moved to Randolph Co. NC(??Cathy??), or at least other members of Catherine's Bryan children's descendants did. Further, there is a record of a URIAH MARSH involved with issue of a slave Milly Wiggin in Randolph Co NC (?) court. Said slave tied to Catherine and Edmond Marsh as well. See: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbertie/court.htm I did notice an Edward MARCH on the 1793 Bertie tax list.. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/bertie/census/1798.txt I am of course interested if anyone has found ties between the Marsh/Mash family in Hertford and that in Bertie Co?? Or if anyone has more information on either? Is James the father of Edmond and George? Edmond the father of the Uriah in Randolph County Records? Uriah and George in Hertford related to these folks. Since Hertford County is burned, I am also searching the surrounding counties My descent is through George and Mary Marsh/Mash's son Michael, who married Elizabeth LANDING/LANDEN in 1822, she was the daughter of Mary HARRELL and Mills LANDIN, married 1800 in Gates Co NC. Mills died about 1803 and Mary married (2) Uriah EURE, Jr. in Gates Co. Michael and Elizabeth Marsh moved to Bedford County, Tennessee about 1827/8 based on later census information for their children. I descend from their son Benjamin James Jordan Marsh who left TN about 1854, and moved to Benton Co AR, just outside Bentonville. Apparently he had a falling out with his father; the rest of his siblings stayed in Bedford or Lincoln Co TN for the most part. When Benjamin moved to Dade Co., Missouri about 1865, he is listed as Benjamin JJ MARCH, and one of his parcels he sold to a BRITTAIN MARCH, who I am very curious about. There is some information on this family at a cousin's WorldConnect/Ancestry.com gedcom website here: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=marsh&id=I1005 If any of you do research in Bedford or Lincoln Counties in Tennessee, you are familiar with the books of Tim and Helen Crawford Marsh. He is a descendant of Michael Marsh and Elizabeth Landing. I understand they have been unable to make a connection with other Lincoln Co. TN Marsh families; nor have we been able to connect them when a branch moves to Lawrence Co Missouri. Benjamin lived DIRECTLY on the Dade Co line with Lawrence Co. I look forward to hearing from researchers in this little part of North Carolina who might have some connections or make suggestions for research avenues. I haven't looked carefully at Southampton, Suffolk, Norfolk, Isle of Wight VA records, but hope to soon.. Best Regards, Janet (Baugh) Hunter
