Hi all, I've been asked where to stay while researching in Hertford County. A good motel that is not cheap but not too expensive is the Ahoskie Inn (252) 332-4165. It's about 20 minutes from Murfreesboro, 30 minutes from Winton, and 5 minutes from Ahoskie. It's by far the best motel in the area, which is why they can get away with charging a bit more. There are two very cheap and old motels in Ahoskie, one of which is the Tomahawk Inn and I don't remember the name of the other one. There is also a cheap old motel in Murfreesboro that I know nothing about, but I've seen. If you don't mind driving a good distance (about 45 minutes each way), I have stayed in the Motel 6 at Roanoke Rapids (252) 537-5252 and it's very inexpensive. Unlike a lot of those, that one is nice and clean, similar to the Ahoskie Inn. It also takes those coupons that you can find at Shoney's and gas stations along I-95. I also saw a Days Inn in Elizabeth City (919) 335-4316 (yes, I know that's not Murfreesboro, but there's this genealogical library, see, and lots of people who lived in Hertford came from that area originally, including mine - the Forbes). I always try to stay with family, so I can stay longer and also enjoy my family. <smile> But that's not always possible for various reasons. -Susan Lassiter Graham http://www.futuretechdesigns.com

Hi all, I'm Susan Lassiter Graham, and I've been asked to help with the administration of this mail list, by John Godwin since I know a bit about computers, and I asked how I could help. (A dangerous question!) My father's family is from Hertford County, NC, and I was born there. My family is still there, although I'm sad to say my grandparents aren't around any more. But my aunts and uncles and cousins are, and I visit them regularly. I am happily married with two boys, 8 and almost-10 and live in Atlanta, GA. NC Family Names: Baker?, Cherry?, Darden, Dunn, Forbes, Gregory?, Lassiter, Jenkins, Jones, Parker, Rogerson Visit, you say? Yes, and I'm going there in July on a purely genealogical research trip. However, this time around I have so much of my own stuff to research that I can't take specific research requests. What I can and am happy to take is information to keep an eye out for while I'm doing my research. I keep this in a file, and as I'm doing my research, if I come across something that is relevant to your research, I'll make a copy for you and send it to you (or take a picture, or write down the info, as appropriate). I have a digital camera that I'll be taking with me for cemeteries and documents. I'll also be back very briefly in August for a family reunion, and intend to stop by the Northeastern NC Genealogy Library in Elizabeth City (same deal as above). I may or may not get to the library in July. I've just started with my family history research last year, so I'm a bit new to this. However, I am good at research, so it's coming along very well. I am studying toward getting a certification in genealogy, and I'm not sure at this point whether I'll just be using it for my own research or whether I'll do professional genealogy work on the side. So let me hear from you, and let's get this list cranked back up a bit, shall we? <smile> -Susan Web Site Designer (among lots of other things) http://www.futuretechdesigns.com/
Bob, I just happen to have a copy of the book on my desk at the time I read your message. If you have family in the Northeastern part of NC you may want to go to the Family Reasearch Society home page. They cover the counties that you would be interested in. Stacee, I don't know if you have visited "Sally's Family Place," at www2.txcyber.com/~smkoestl/, but she has quite a bit of information on a Cotten family of Hertford Co. Don't know if your line is there, but it could be of some help. >>> <SMcca14689@aol.com> 05/08/01 06:51PM >>> It's been a long time since I've posted, so I'll try one line of my family to get started. I'm looking for information on Phebe Weaver & John Cotton. They married sometime prior to 1832, about the time their first son was born. Their children: Joseph, William J. (born in NC)., Martha, Sarah, Henry, Wiley W., Catherine, Nancy Ann, & Wright. William went to Michigan. Martha and Nancy married brothers, John and Reuben Robbins, respectively and moved to MI. Wiley was in MI for a time, but died in Dayton, OH. Catherine and Wright remained in the Randolph County area. Phebe & John moved to Randolph County, Indiana between 1833 and 1836. There were several Weavers in that area of Indiana. I'm assuming many family members migrated around the same time. I'm not sure if any other Cottons moved there at the same time they did. John Cotton was listed in the 1820 census as free person of color. Phebe Weaver's father was Jesse Weaver. She is listed in his will. The will lists her sisters, Fanny & Nancy Cotton (I'm wondering if they married brother's from the same Cotton family). Brothers listed were William and Jesse. I would appreciate any information on Phebe & John. I'd like to find out if any of their families remained in Hertford County. Thanks for any help you can give me. I am researching the John Hayes family. John HAYES married Celia A. NOWELL about 1850 in Hertford County. Their children were Charles W. Hayes born 1852 died 1925; George Thomas Hayes born 1854, married Esther (?) about 1878 in Gates (?) Co.; Indianna Hayes b. 1856 d. 1928 in Hertford Co.; Millard C. Hayes b. 1858 married Lula LOWE in 1892 in Hertford Co.; Irena Hayes b. 1861 d. 1933 in Harrellsville, Hertford Co. Dewit C. MILLER, in his will dated January 1913, gave $100 to his "Sister Celia Hays children." The Final Account indicated that in May 1923 the money was paid as follows: C. W. Hayes $25, Indiana Hayes $25, Irene Hayes $25, John M. Hayes $12.50, and Laura BEALE $12.50. Are John M. Hayes and Laura Beale the children of George Thomas Hayes or are they the children of Millard C. Hayes? Mary L. Tyler rlmltyler@att.net
Hi Carol, Linda and List, It has been so long since I have been in touch that I am embarrassed to write to you. I saw Linda's note to a fellow last night and then Carol's post just now and am hoping that perhaps you all will forgive my long absence. I have really missed *talking* with you all and working on genealogy. Have some pretty neat info regarding Nathaniel Nichols with the NC Militia that has been shared with me through the years that might be of use to you right now. If so please let me know OK? Hello, List, It has been a while since I have posted or worked but interest never leaves, just gets knocked out of the way. I'm still hoping to find proof of the existence of John Nichols, father of Jackson Nichols, born 1811 in Bedford County, TN. I believe he was in Hertford Co. in 1800. Linda, we have touched base before but it has been a while. Anything new with you? I received a letter (Postal Service) from Maurice L. Jenkins of Sun City, CA. He is looking for John Jenkins, born in Bertie Co. in 1700, died in 1779. Wife was Anne and his son James married Mary. James was born in 1726 and died in 1796, in Bertie County. I realize that this is not Hertford (the latter, anyway) but there were and still are Jenkins folks here in Hertford. If you can help this fellow let me know. If I remember correctly, Linda, you are researching Wright Nichols? or was it William? Do you know if the Nichols men were in the local Militia or the Continentals during the Rev. War? Methinks that maybe Col. Hardy Murfree might have gone with a bunch of men from this area to Rutherford and Bedford Counties, TN. ( Murfreesboro, TN was named for Hardy Murfree by his friend Lytle, if I have the story straight.) Carol
I would like to hear from anyone researching the family of Jethro Baker and his wife, Milly. Jethro died before 1830. They had at least 3 children: Martha, Sarah, and Joseph. Martha died in 1835. James NOWELL was appointed guardian for Joseph Baker. Joseph Baker's children were Daisy W., Robert G., Wayland, Arthur, and Quinton. Executors of Joseph Baker's will (presented to the Superior Court 3 Dec 1849) were A. H. Askew and W. E. Miller. Jethro's widow, Milly, married Abner Alston, a neighbor on the 1820 Hertford Co. Census. Other neighbors were Timothy Baker and Cassander Baker. I am also researching DOUGHTIE, FRANCIS, HAYES, and MORRISS of Hertford and Bertie Counties. Mary L. Tyler rlmltyler@att.net

Am looking for info on Jacob SHARP, married to Nancy HUNTER; son Col. Elisha Hunter SHARP (b. 4/28/1800), married to Martha Williams BATTLE.
I have entries from EDENTON DISTRICT LOOSE PAPERS, abstracted by Stephen E. Bradley, Jr. concerning the estate of Miles BLANCHARD in 1798, 1799 and 1800. John Glohon (McGlohon) and his wife Sarah (Sally) are in these entries. Sarah is admrx of Miles Blanchard. Does anyone, who is researching BLANCHARDS have information about this family which would indicate if Sarah was the daughter or if she was the widow of Miles Blanchard and had remarried John Glohon. Thank you in advance. Alice
