    1. [NCHERTFO-L] Research Line & a brick wall
    2. Lisa Adams
    3. I am researching the Francis and Hill lines. My gr grandfather was William St.Clair Francis. He was born March 1882 to a J.F. (possibly JT) and Cora Francis. The father died and Cora remarried a Hill there in Elizabeth City. Cora herself died by 1909 because the Hill man remarried and had 4 sons, Frank, John, Joseph and Fentress. There is one son (John I think it was), still alive (92 yrs) and he is in Elizabeth City. I talked to him but he didn't know much. He did call William Francis "Saint" and said that Saint would come to see his father and mother. William married and older woman in NC who died sometime before 1924. No one knows her name. I am planning a trip home in July and hope to be able to get more information. You can't get much information here in Texas except about Texas. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! 2. Susan Graham
    3. Hi again! I thought it might also be helpful to start a thread on brick walls (ancestors whose parents I don't know). I know anywhere from just the name to a lot about these people. I doubt anyone knows about them, but it never hurts to try! I seem to be doing research for the first time ever on my father's side of the family, with one notable exception (the Forbes). James Henry Lassiter b.c. 1837 d.c. 1891 (Martin County, Murfreesboro, & St. Johns area) +Elizabeth Baker b.c. 1830 d.c. 1901 (this may be her first married name; she may have been a widow) Anne Cherry (not sure of last name, aka Annie) b.c. 1858 d.c. 1941 married Spencer Allen Lassiter, son of above two people Peter Jones b.c. 1856 d.c. 1916 (Aulander area?) +Pauline Rogerson b.c. 1858 d.c. 1926 (Aulander area?) David Franklin Dunn b.c. 1855 d.c. 1941 (possibly son of Jerome Dunn, immigrant from Ireland) +Sallie Parker b.c. 1857 d.c. 1941 Isaac Forbes b.c. 1770 d.c. 1830? (Camden County?, father of Evan Forbes 1796-1869) +Unknown wife's name at this time Thomas Gregory b.c. 1738 d.c. 1814 (Camden County?, father of Noah Gregory) +Unknown wife's name Allison Parker b.c. 1830? d.c. 1900? (male) +Harriette J. Vaughan b.c. 1830? d.c. 1900? Stephen Durden (Darden) b.c. 1620 d.c. 1680? +Elizabeth Carr b.c. 1620? d.c. 1680? William Whitehead b.c. 1730? d.c. 1790? +Patience (unknown last name) b.c. 1730? d.c. 1790? I hope this makes sense. If there is some other information or format that would be helpful, please let me know. I'm still a novice at this. -Susan Lassiter Graham

But since there are a few new subscribers, it might be a good idea to do it again. -Susan At 09:33 06/27/01 EDT, you wrote: >Hi Susan: It's great you will be helping out. 3. Welcome to the Hertford County mail list! I'm Susan Lassiter Graham and I'm helping with the administration of this list while the current administrator helps his wife out with their new twins. <smile> I'm also working on revamping the web site, so if you have any suggestions or comments or questions about it, please let me know. That goes for you old-timers, too. I'll be researching in NC in a couple of weeks for a couple of weeks (without children, even! they get to go to grandma's), so if you have any particular research requests, let me know and I'll keep an eye out while I'm researching. I won't have time for specific research for you this time, but I might just see something while I look around. I've been making sure to look at neighbors' information, too, in case I miss a relative and to get a better feel for what was happening. -Susan Lassiter Graham

    3. Well, I tried to send the bond, but you can't send an attachment over the list. If there is anyone out there who would look at this for me and help me just a little. This bond was issued in Perquimans but it looks like they did it in Hertford. It also looks like the name of a church, but I can't be sure. Just looking for some input.

    3. Susan, Perhaps you are alluding to the Edenton District which in 1780 consisted of 9 counties, one of which was Hertford. There is also a town of Hertford in Chowan County, a few miles east of Edenton which is also in that district. Take care. Hertford was created from some of Chowan County which did have an Edington (Edenton) district mentioned in some stuff I was reading once upon a time. John F. Godwin

    3. Hi Susan, I looked at my map of Hertford County that I got last fall from the county courthouse. It doesn't have districts, but it does have all of the roads and waterways and towns and even some cemetery locations (not all of them, like where my great-grandmother is buried is not marked on the map, and also no names of the cemeteries, unfortunately), in case you need that. So I'm sorry I can't help you with Edington District. Let me know if you need something else and I'll do my best. -Susan At 15:09 06/07/01 -0400, you wrote: >Hi, >I'm wondering if anyone can tell me where the Edington district of Hertford >Co. is and what towns it is made up of? >Susan in MA

    3. Hello Susan, Thanks for the inquiry. Barnes House is at 308 West Main Street (highway 158 Business) in M'boro. It is next door to Garrett Funeral Home and across the street from the Dr. Walter Reed house. I have 3 rooms here; 2 upstairs with queen sized beds, 1 downstairs with twin beds, all with private baths, TV (w/cable) phones, and Fax on the premises. I also have two rooms at Piper House, which will soon be under a manager. They are: One with two double beds, one with queen bed; Cable TVs, private baths, phone available but no Fax. The houses are approximately one mile apart so the Fax is available to guests in both houses. Piper House is at 809 East High Street, M'boro. That is toward highway 11 on the east end of High Street. A large white house. Rates are $65.00 plus tax for single; $75.00 plus tax for double. $10.00 for each additional person in room at Piper House (big rooms). This includes a full breakfast. Check in is from 2:00 PM (or whenever you get here) and check out is at 11:00. Full breakfast served until 9:30 but after that it is Continental. Lucinda Glover mentioned in her letter that Woodson Manor (Don and Lynn Johnson) and Winborne House (Dick and Edna Hammel) are also lovely homes with great accommodations. Murfreesboro is not very large so all four of these places are within a mile or so of each other. Johnsons are at 252-398-4142. Hammels are at 252-398-5224. I look forward to meeting you when you come to Murfreesboro, no matter where you stay. Who are your cousins here? Thanks, Carol Piper ---------- > From: Susan Graham <susang777@mindspring.com> > To: Carol Piper <cmpiper@coastalnet.com> > Subject: Your B&B & genealogical research trips > Date: Saturday, June 02, 2001 12:13 AM > > Hi Carol, > > Ken told me about you (as you probably noticed on the NCHERTFO list). 3. I have had such difficulty finding records in Hertford Co. I understand that the courthouse has burned at least twice. I would be interested in a discussion of what records are available. The families I am interested in are: Benjamin Ezell who is on the 1790 and 1800 censuses in Hertford. His son Lewis later moved to Lauderdale Co., AL. Also the family of Jonathan and Priscilla Rogers who were on the 1790 census. Their daughter Nancy married Lewis Ezell. I have been told (but have not been able to confirm) that Will Rogers traced his family to the Hertford Co. Rogers. Sandy

    3. To folks considering visiting Hertford County: There are a couple of bed & breakfast places in Murfreesboro. One run by Don & Lynn Johnson has a web address http://bbonline.com/nc/woodson/index.html The 2nd is a restored home dating from the 1840s(?), run by Dick & Edna Hammel, both of whom are extremely active in Historic Murfreesboro activities. Enjoy your visit! And consider visiting the Brady Jefcoat Museum in Murfreesboro. It is housed in the my high school alma mater and is quite a collection. http://www.albemarle-nc.com/murfreesboro/history/oldhsch.htm Lucinda Howell Glover 5206 Rembert Drive Raleigh NC 27612 (919) 881-4175 lhglover@bellsouth.net
