    1. [NCHERTFO-L] 1863 Map Online
    2. Susan Graham
    3. Hi all, A very small and very amateur attempt at putting a very tiny part of the 1863 map online for research purposes has resulted in this: http://susang777.home.mindspring.com/HertfordCo/index.html There is a low-resolution image of a portion of the map, and four clickable places on the upper left that show hi-res close-up pictures of that part. I'd like some feedback and suggestions on how I did this. I will be fine-tuning it myself as time goes on. And then I'll figure out a way to get it onto the Hertford County web space. Happy Holidays! -Susan Lassiter Graham

    3. Hi Bobby, There is an A. Rawls near Mt. Tabor Church (Mapleton Community) between Murfreesboro and Winton. There is a D. Rawls just over the county line into Northampton County near the Pleasant Grove Church and next to the Ahosky Swamp creek. I don't see any other Rawls in Hertford County, and none in my quick scan of Bertie County. The map has tiny details, so it's possible I missed one, but I don't think so. So not J. Rawls, but perhaps relatives? I hope that helps! 3. Hi Bobby, Yes, just glancing quickly at it (I'm about to go run an errand), I did see some Rawls on the map. If you could get more specific about name of head of household, location and neighbors' names, I could tell you whether they are on it. Here's how you get a copy of the map: Go to the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh, NC to the maps/records room and ask them to copy it for you. It cost me about $2, as I recall, and didn't take them very long (about 30-40 min. in between other things). Here's their web site address: http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/archives/arch/default.htm And here's their mailing address, in case you can send them a money order including shipping costs and get them to send it to you (I don't know whether this would work, but it can't hurt to ask). Let me know if it works, if you do try it, please. Mail inquiries may be sent to: North Carolina State Archives Public Services Branch 4614 Mail Service Center Raleigh, N.C. 27699-4614 Physical Address 109 E. Jones St. Raleigh, N.C. 27601 Phone: (919) 733-3952 Fax: (919) 733-1354 E-mail: archives@ncmail.net I hope that helps! Please let me know what comes of your inquiry to them. 3. Hi Kay, I didn't see any Curls on the 1863 map in the area you specified. It is possible that she stayed with a neighbor, friend, or family during that period, especially since she was pregnant. Do you know the names of her parents, or did you happen to note the names of her neighbors (the people before and after her on the census)? I would be happy to look for those. Did you find her in the 1870 census? If so, where? -Susan At 06:28 12/19/01 EST, you wrote: >Hi >I am trying to find Mary Jane Curl of Hertford Co. 3. Hi Angel, What I would do about Missouri Sikes is twofold: first, I would go to the county in which she died, and look up her death certificate. On it, you should find information about her parents. I would also look on census records, particularly 1860 and 1870, for her family. For your gg-gfather, a death certificate and older census records again would be helpful. Map Resources: On my April 1863 map of the area that has names and locations listed, I found two Sykes listed in the area in a line between Murfreesboro and Rich Square, west of Union, along a creek/stream labeled UHARA SWP which I take to mean "Uhara Swamp", and one to the north of there. There are also Bryants there. Here are the names: H. Sykes, (off the map) Sykes, W. Bryant, C. Bryant, J. Bryant, M. Bryant, Mrs. Bryant, N. Bryant, all along the same road, then along a different road, H. Bryant. When I compare this area to my present-day Hertford County map, I find to my surprise that I missed the county line designation on the old map, and that all of the information I just told you occurs in Northampton County! There is a present-day county road designated 1160 that points to the area, which is near Potecasi Creek. I don't have a present-day Northampton County map, although that is one of the things on my Still-Need-To-Get List. I hope that helps! -Susan P.S.--I suspect I have some Bryants in my family background also. I think one of the brothers of my ggg-gfather had Bryant as his middle name. Also, my first cousin is named Bryant, although he is called Brian. At 23:26 12/17/01 EST, you wrote: Hi Susan, Thanks for the warm welcome! My dad's family is from Hertford County and the Union township. I have hit a proverbial brick wall concerning my ggg Missouri Sikes, born about 1857. I have tried to find her parents. She married Nicholas Bryant and they as well as her sister (Lucy Sikes) were listed on the 1880 census. On the Hertford Co. census 1920, she is listed with her second husband Miles Dukes. Her maiden name, Sikes is also spelled Sykes. I have been trying to find her parents and have had no luck! I am also looking for the parents of my gg grandfather Thad Dukes, born about 1882. His is listed on the Hertford county census in 1900 and in 1920 when he married my great grandmother Claudia. If you have any information or tips regarding the above, please let me know! Sincerely, Angel Dukes Montague

There is a Daughtry website, but can't find right now. It may be with the Batchelor or Lawrence families. I will have to dig some more. Does your stepfather have siblings that may be on the 1920 census, that is probably the best place to start and work backwards. What town in Hertford? 2. Susan Graham
    3. Hi Carlton, It will really help to post the entire name of the person you are looking for, and birth and death dates, or guesses if you don't have exact dates. Also who married to. Anything else you know might help as well, you never know. The more, the better. For instance, you don't have your great-grandfather's name, dates, who married to. It will be a lot harder to find or figure out who this person was or more info about him, if you don't have that basic info. If you have their child's info, it might be easier to back into it with that. -Susan At 10:29 12/11/01 EST, you wrote: >Dear Susan. > I have a GGrandfather who is said to have been born in Hertford Cty, >in 1811, I know his fathers name Thomas Mills Sumner, But I cant find >anything in the Hertford or NC sources. 3. Welcome to the Hertford County, NC mail list! My name is Susan Graham, and I am co-administering this mail list. I am an amateur genealogist researching my father's family from Hertford County, where I was also born. I have close family there, still, but I now live in Atlanta, Georgia. I can answer some basic genealogical questions, if you have any, and I might occasionally know something about a family you are researching there. RESOURCES: I have a pictorial book on the history of Hertford County, a book on Parker's Ferry, a book on the Lassiter family in general going forward to the Utah area through Tennessee, several birth and death certificates, copies of wills, a current map of Hertford County, and an 1863 map of Hertford County with surnames listed where they live. I also visit there once or twice a year. 3. Hi Elaine, and welcome to the NCHERTFO mail list! I think there have been a couple of messages on the list since the time you mention, however. AOL tends to have the worst trouble getting messages, but I'm not sure about your email provider, not having heard of it before. There are two managers of this list. I'm a co-manager helping the main one while he helps his wife with their new twins. The recent events have distracted us all, I believe. They certainly have distracted me. Even more distracting and upsetting to me personally, my father-in-law recently died. I apologize for the lack of interaction lately, and things will get more interesting as I pull myself together. Hobbies tend to get left behind first when tragedy strikes. -Susan At 17:39 10/29/01 -0500, you wrote: >I have been a subscriber since 9/14/01 and have not seen any postings to this site. My homepage has been listed with them so in order to keep my site active, I had to transfer to their new process. While looking, I noticed under genealogy, they had no sites listed for NC. I decided to create a webring for just this purpose. I am supposed to maintain this webring. I have never done this so please help me if you think there is something I should know. I invite everyone to list their sites with this webring for more explosure and hopefully more genealogy results. You can list your site by going to the following URL... http://c.webring.com/membercgi?ring=easternnorthcaro&addsite I have listed this as genealogy in Eastern NC and Southeastern VA.
