Sandy, I have one Nichols ancestor who I know ended up in AL. I'm not sure how early he left Hertford. His name was Everet Nichols (another son of Wright Nichols). Everett settled in Madison Co. (Huntsville area) along with some Jenkins families from Hertford Co. He was there by 1835, when he married. Samuel and John Jenkins, sons of John and Rachel (Dunning) Jenkins of Hertford also migrated to Madison Co., AL. Another son of John and Rachel, Winborn, may have migrated also, because several of his children moved to AL. King Jenkins (a son of Winborn Jenkins) bought property in AL in 1831. This may be about the time Everet Nichols moved. I'll keep your post handy in case I find any Ezells connecting to these lines. Wright Nichols third son Nial Nicholds (DOB abt 1793 - DOD May 1853 Hertford Co.) also stayed in Hertford County, and raised a family. Still trying to find his wife's name if anyone has a clue? Thanks - Marianne
Linda, My ancestor is close to what you are discussing. Lewis Ezell was born in Hertford in 1780, the son of Benjamin and Ann Ezell. He is on the 1810 census in Hertford, but we have not located him on the 1820. Some time shortly after 1820 Lewis and his wife Nancy Rogers were in Lauderdale Co., Ala. I recently tried to locate any others in Lauderdale who may have been from Hertford. I only came up with one family...that of Christopher Cheatham who must have migrated about the same time as Lewis Ezell. I have no proof that Lewis Ezell came through Tenn. but that is certainly a possibility as Lauderdale is just across the state line. Sandy
Does anyone on this list have ancestors who migrated to TN, besides John's Nichols ancestor? Perhaps if we can establish what lines migrated out of Hertford in the early 1800's, we can connect them. They may have intermarried once they arrived in TN, if they travelled there together. Three daughters of Wright Nichols ended up in Crittenden Co., KY, arriving in the late 1830's and later. Two sons, John and Miles were dead before 1844, but may have migrated either to TN or to KY. I've no information on where they lived after 1810, but their father's will of 1844 lists them as being deceased and both having heirs. One son, Lemuel Nichols, and one daughter, Lurenda, remained in Hertford Co. Lurenda married William G. Marsh. They may have lived in the Winton area. Lemuel Nichols lived in St. John's township. I need any info on William Moses Nichols, born in Hertford county ca 1791. He came to Lincoln county TN possibly via KY. He married Elizabeth Melson. He was evidently in Lincoln county by 1813. I need his parents, siblings etc. Thank you for reading this and for any help you may provide. This has been my brick wall for 40 years. John Foster
John, Do you know if William Moses Nichols may have left Lincoln Co., TN, and returned to Hertford Co.? There is a William M. Nichols/Nickolds appearing on the 1830 Hertford census: Pg. 401: William M. Nickolds 1 boy 0 - 5 1 man 20 - 30 2 girls 0 - 5 1 woman 30 - 40 1 female slave I've wondered for years who this man is, but have never been able to connect him to other Nichols. Linda Gamel "John A. Hi everyone, Just FYI ~ This is the link to the main page of the NARA site: http://www.archives.gov/aad/ Technology and Science New Article regarding the National Archives: 50 million historical documents made accessible to public By Eun-kyung Kim ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON, April 4 — Researchers, genealogists and the plain curious can now use the Internet to check more than 50 million historical records at the National Archives, from Civil War battles to family immigration files. Before the system became available, people had to either visit the Archives and spend hours combing through documents or request the files by phone and pay to have them mailed.
Hi Everyone, A woman on the DC List just sent this link to a new historical newspaper site that really looks interesting, so I wanted to make sure that you all know about it too just in case you're interested. She wrote: Hi All, I just wanted to let everyone know about a Canadian site that carries The Washington Star for the years 1852-1890. The subscription is available on a weekly, monthly, or yearly basis. Every time they add more years, I find more listings concerning my family and their activities of over 100 years ago! They encourage their users to let them know which newspapers they would like to see more of, so do write and tell them about The Star. They added five more years of this newspaper within a week of my request! For those who are interested, the website is: www.paperofrecord.com Best of luck! PS There are many other newspapers domestic and foreign available and apparently more being added all the time. Marianne

Correction!!! Lemuel Nichols was the youngest son of Wright Nichols of Hertford Co., NC. Wright was b. abt 1769 and d. 1830. A Hertford Co. court document from 1847 mentions that Wright Nichols was the son of John Nichols, and that Wright Nichols was named executor of his father's will. In this document, Wright's daughters Nancy E. Nichols (dec'd by 1844) and Lurenda (Nichols) Marsh are also named as granddaughters of John Nichols. There are some genealogies online that erroneously list this Wright Nichols as the same one who was in Person Co. and who m. Sarah Burch in 1791. These are proven to be two different men, and so far no connection between these two lines has been found. Does anyone on this list connect to and Nichols who lived in the area of St. John's twp during the 1800's? Also searching for more information on a John Nichols, who lived in Winton, Hertford Co., in 1805. His name appears in a newspaper ad that year. He had lost a horse and was posting an ad in hopes of retreiving it. I believe he is the John Nichols who d. abt. 1830 and who is the father of Lemuel Nichols who lived in St. John's. Lemuel died there in September 1881. Lemuel Nichols had at least two children, Sarah M. (b. abt 1837, m. William B. Howard) and Elizabeth (b. abt 1840). Linda
