    1. [NCHERTFO-L] Edward Early ?
    2. Marianne Ordway
    3. Anyone have Edward Early information? I've been digging through the 1870 Hertford census for his family and nothing yet. He was born 11 Feb 1862 (from his gravestone), married Martha ODOM of Bertie County. It's possible that he was in Bertie in 1870, but I didn't find him there either, and that census has mostly been transcribed on-line. Also, family members told me he was from Hertford, but they don't know his parents either. His obituary just calls him Ed Early, doesn't name parents. Edward and Martha's daughter married the son of William Judson Williford and Mary Elizbabeth Godwin. Thanks so much for checking - trying to find his parents. Marianne

    1. [NCHERTFO-L] WWI Draft Cards
    2. Marianne Ordway
    3. Here is some info that was discussed previously on the DC List that may help you find some needed information regarding your WWI ancestors records: The cards are on film in Room 400 at the National Archives. The National Archives in DC (and all of the branches) have these WWI draft registration cards on microfilm. This is a really great resource that few people seem to know about. You do need to know where the person lived in 1917/1918 but otherwise it's pretty easy to use these films. One of the best things about the draft registration cards is that they give some information about the men's height, build, and eye and hair color, which is not something that one can generally find in other sources. They also list next of kin and often a place of work. One researcher I know found both of his grandfathers and all of his great uncles cards in a few hours one day down at the Archives. Remarkable finds for a few hours work. For information or to obtain the records or films by mail here is the link to the NARA WWI page: http://www.archives.gov/research_room/genealogy/military/wwi_draft_registrat ion_cards.html Good luck! Marianne

    2. Sandra Sharp
    3. In his book Old Albemarle and Its Absentee Landlords, Worth Ray stated he believed that the ancestors of humorist Will Rogers descended from Edward Rogers who came to America in 1623 and that they migrated from Virginia into NC....Chowan Co. which in part became Gates. He believed that the Rogers in Hertford were of the same family. Does anyone have information which would verify the relationship? Sandy

    3. Thanks to those who responded with information from the Winborne book. Presumably this is the same Jonathan Rogers who was the father of Nancy Rogers although there was a Jonathan Rogers in Gates Co. in the same time period. And...he had a wife named Priscilla too!

    3. Hi Sandra, Page 288: ....[Col. Uriah Vaughan] (DOD January 19, 1900) ... His father was John Vaughan, of Hertford, who was a soldier in the War of 1812. His mother was Sarah Rogers, daughter of Jonathan Rogers, of this county. His paternal grandfather was William Vaughan, a continental soldier in the War of 1776. Colonel Vaughan ...married Sarah A., the daughter of Henry Deberry Jenkins, of this county, and a soldier in the War of 1812. Page: 291: ...[Doctor John Turner Eldridge]...the doctor married Alberta, the daughter of Capt. J.M.S. Rogers, of Northampton County, N.C., who was frequently in the Legislature from Northampton between 1828 and 1850. Page: 113: [A William Rogers is mentioned in "A Remarkable Criminal Trial" that was dubbed "Fudge" he was a resident of Murfreesboro of good standing, and was arrested with three other respectable men and charged with breaking and entering the home of Jethro Pender in 1818. They were ultimately found innocent and pardoned, due to the confession of a man who was imprisoned in Suffolk, VA under a death sentence. There is no mention that I can find in this book of Lewis Ezell, Nancy Rogers or Priscilla Rogers. He does mention on page 305 that his wife Nellie H. Vaughan was the fourth daughter of Col. Uriah Vaughan, of Murfreesboro. Just in case her birth order is of any interest to you. 3. What I had intended to say to you regarding the message gate being established between the Hertford County List and the Hertford RootsWeb message Board is that once the "gateway" is in place any message posted to the Board will show up on the Hertford County List which should be a big help with Hertford related communication. This is however only a one way street because the messages sent to the List will not be added to the RootsWeb Board, so it will be good to keep that in mind in case you want to post something to the Board that you've sent to the List. 3. Hi Ken, You're absolutely right. That is the information provided by the NC State Archives in their short prelude introduction of available Hertford County records. I didn't alter anything from that data that they provided. Thanks for setting that records straight for everyone. Guess it wouldn't hurt to ask the State Archives to correct that information now would it? Guess I'll write to them unless you'd like to do it? <g> Marianne ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ken Christison" <christison@coastalnet.com> To: "Marianne Ordway" <mordway@adelphia.net> Sent: Thursday, April 10, 2003 2:22 PM Subject: Re: Hertford County formation. > Hi Marianne, > > Just checking to see why you just list Chowan as the county > that Hertford was formed from. 3. Hi Everyone, Wanted to let you know that I have volunteered to keep the Hertford RootsWeb Board and am looking forward to all of Hertford County research becoming more productive and enjoyable for everyone who has an interest in this county, its history and people. With the scarcity of records available regarding this county the sharing of what info we have can be invaluable, and collectively will create a tremendous data base for all of us to work with and preserve for future researchers. Please take a minute and share something that you know or are interested in about Hertford County here on this County List regardless of how insignificant you think it might be to someone else okay? It just might be a clue that someone else has been hunting for, or act as a catalyst that snowballs into a great find for you or others. If our ancestors had talked and written things down a few extra times we probably wouldn't have to be bothering with genealogy "walls" now - you know? <g> Here is a listing of the contact info for the NC State Archives and their holdings for Hertford County, NC - just in case it will be a help to your research. I've also sent it to the Hertford RootsWeb message Board @ http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.st ates.northcarolina.counties.hertford&m=475 We are also hoping to have the County List and the RootsWeb Board messages "gate" open soon which will link this Boards messages to the Hertford County site List group that should help with the flow of communication between the two. John F. Godwin our Hertford County site Administrator jfgodwin@adelphia.net and Guy Potts the Archives Manager gpotts1@nc.rr.com are busy making changes and keeping up with all the new info that is being donated. If you have a minute to donate something to them to use at the site please do. If you have a fact or story or link to share with everyone please check out the County site http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchertfo/ look for a contribute prompt and click! Also, there have been additional files added to the Archives this year that are not showing up with the search function just yet probably due to a back log of work for the people who index the new files for the Archives. It helps while digging around through the new info that hasn't been indexed to remember that even as elaborate as these sites have grown that most of the work is still accomplished by volunteers. Besides patience and hope are necessities with genealogy research and it gives us a chance to cultivate those skills. <g> Here is that list of the Hertford County files that are held at the NC State Archives just in case it will be a help to your research: Mail inquiries may be sent to: North Carolina State Archives Public Services Branch 4614 Mail Service Center Raleigh, N.C. 27699-4614 Physical Address 109 E.
