    1. [NCHERTFO-L] NC/VA Patent Research & Mills Family Information
    2. Marianne Ordway
    3. Notes graciously contributed from Raymond P. Fouts to our area researchers: I seem to recall someone on your list mentioning the surname Mills in Gates, and other counties, and wondering whence it came. In Gates, it was from one Henry Mills who owned land there prior to 1694 and had later patents. At that time, it was still Nansemond County and the patents are online now. I have collected about 300 of them for Nansemond so far and they are amazingly helpful. If it would help someone, please do tell people about Henry Mills. I know it isn't accepted genealogical procedure to look back too far before making a connection, by any means, but people in the adjoining counties would benefit from looking for their surnames in those VA Patents. It will help if they will keep in mind that Nansemond extended all the way down to Gatesville, in Gates County, until 1728, when Byrd drew the "dividing line." Many of the patents cover the other counties at that level (latitude?) on the map. Both VA and NC made patents and grants in the same area, not being able to agree where their borders really were. The VA Patents, at http://eagle.vsla.edu/lonn/virtua-basic.html have a name, keyword or subject search and you can search on surnames, county names and dates, too. If I remember correctly, just typing in "Nansemond" on the keyword search will bring up something over 1,000 hits. They are fascinating to read and the digital images can be printed out.

    1. [NCHERTFO-L] NC Secretary of State Wills - Indexed

    3. Hi Everyone, This was shared by Jackie on the Gates County List and is a terrific link so want to make sure that you know about it. http://www.thedrake.org/sswills/ssindex.htm The contact address to obtain a copy of the will is provided as well. You may want to check on the fee mentioned just to be sure that it hasn't increased. Also, I visited the Gates Co. site last night and really looked around this time - they have done some amazing things with that site and there is a wealth of info - particularly impressive is the Cemetery project. That is a place worth your visit as there are so many cemeteries and interments listed that I think you'd be hard pressed to not find something or someone interesting. Quick link: http://www.throughwire.net/gatesgenweb/ Something else that is just wonderful to know this Kentucky Derby weekend - I was informed this morning that Hertford County posted 21 cemeteries and two newspaper articles to its data base last week that were added to the North Carolina USGenWeb Archives and Tombstone Transcription Register. All of the counties had activity of course, but it really is fun to see Hertford County taking strides like this! Please take a minute to contribute something to the data base okay? They say what goes around comes around, and what you have to share may mean a lot to someone else - then come right back around to you! If you have any suggestion, questions or info to share or time to transcribe information to be placed in the Archives to improve the available data base for research please let it be known by posting to this board or the Hertford county List, site, or Archives. Hertford Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/hertford.htm To make a contribution please contact: Guy Potts: gpotts1@nc.rr.com Hertford County NCGenWeb site: To make a contribution please contact: John F. 1. [NCHERTFO-L] Re: [NCBERTIE] The term Land Entry
    2. Marianne Ordway
    3. An entry is a claim made to the appointed entry taker by the enterer for vacant or unclaimed land that was technically the property of the State. The enterer described the land -- number of acres, nearby waterways, and neighboring land holders. If there were no problems, the entry taker issued a warrant to the county surveyor to survey the land. The warrant and completed survey were sent to the Secretary of State. A grant or patent was then issued, and the person receiving the grant usually had about twelve months to register the grant in the county. However, problems or counter claims did often appear. [and that is another story ..<g>...] [Excerpted from "Abstracts Of Land Entries: Bertie Co., NC 1778-1794, Martin Co., NC 1778-1795" - By Dr. A.B. 2. Marianne Ordway
    3. Hi Everyone, I just received the nicest and most informative note from Raymond P. Fouts and wanted you to know too. I haven't visited this site in a looong time and am so glad that he sent this link: Hi Marianne, I published quite a few abstracts of some of the newspapers you mentioned, with full indexes. I retired in 1998, but Family Research Society of Northeastern North Carolina, in Elizabeth City, carries all my books now. You can read about them at: http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/Theatre/3818/ if you wish. Happy Hunting! Raymond P. Fouts

    3. Hi Everyone, I've been working on old newspaper research and thought that some of you may find some of this interesting and or useable information. You may just find something terrific for you own research through one of these microfilmed newspapers. I'll put the links to get you started at the bottom of this note. Also, I noticed today that the NC Archives has quite a number of searchable ancient newspaper articles that you can browse through at will. There are some amazing things to read about from these old papers. 1. [NCHERTFO-L] Vital Records Costs
    2. Marianne Ordway
    3. Please do not take those costs for service fee's as current/accurate. I'm sure that you've noticed that the fee's change on a continual bases, and of course for a State resident the cost is minimal compared to the rest of us who are not fortunate enough to live in NC. :o) I just wanted to make sure that you had the contact info for your files in case you didn't have it. 3. http://www.censusdiggins.com/civil_war_records_faq.html [This is a very informative page with "How To" advise, links and quicky course about obtaining your ancestors Civil War Records.] I just saw this Civil War Look Up link and thought that one of you might like to have it. They have mentioned that approximately 60% of Civil War Soldiers info is not available on line (that is probably a bit high), but nevertheless if you're having trouble locating your ancestor this might give you an option. Please remember that NARA is online and has the forms available for you to fill out and request your ancestors military records. http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Lair/3680/cw/cantfind.html A Civil War Roster: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Lair/3680/cw/cw-nc.html Censusdiggins.com http://www.censusdiggins.com/nc_civil_war_ham.html [They offer a lot of free data bases that are interesting]

    1. [NCHERTFO-L] New Cemeteries for Hertford Archives & Newspaper Tribuite
    2. Marianne Ordway
    3. Hi Everyone, There have been so many contributions made to the Hertford site the past couple of days that it is really wonderful! Even photo's - which is really opening up a new realm of possibilities for researching this county. Guy won't be able to post additional info to the archives until this weekend, but it should be worth the wait and hope that you will keep finding records to share and send them in. Please remember in a few days to check through and search the new info that has been sent in this week. Here are a number of things that you might enjoy seeing that have been offered just since last night: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This appeared in a Roanoke-Chowan News Herald newspaper column entitled "People to Know" by James A. Bateman on February 10, 1938. One of the most respected and liked men in the Christian Harbor community is J.H. Evans, retired farmer who uses his spare time clerking in the store of his son, G.P. Evans, with whom he makes his home. Somewhat of a "cross road philospher", Mr. Evans is well versed in current events, both within and outside of his community, and is often heard to express sound and practical theories concerning many of today's problems. Joseph Henry Evans, 81, was born at the old Smith place between Ahoskie and Union, on June 25, 1857, the son of the late Joseph B. and Mary E. Baugham Evans, of Hertford County. He married Miss Maggie D. Taylor, of Christian Harbor, who died February 15, 1937. Twelve children were born of this union, nine of whom are now living. They are: Mrs. J.L. Blythe, Mrs. N.S. Hoggard, W.H. Evans and Grady P. Evans of the Christian Harbor Community; E.P. Evans of Greeleyville, S.C.; Mrs. Annie Mae Downing, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Owen and Mrs. Marguerite Fox, of Norfolk, Va.; Samuel Lee Evans of Colorado. Mr. Evans joined the Bethlehem Baptist Church 65 years ago and has been a member of the Christian Harbor Baptist Church for 40 years. He was teacher of the first men's bible class for 27 years and was ordained a deacon in 1900, being chairman of the board of deacons ever since. He was clerk of the Christian Harbor church for 18 years. He is still active in church and Sunday school work attending regularly. Mr. Evans is clerk in his son's store at Lloyd's Cross Roads. He was appointed magistrate in 1896 and held that position for six years. Despite his advanced age, Mr. Evans reads and writes without the aid of glasses and gets around like a "young man". Incidentally, he hasn't missed subscribing to the Herald since it was first established. 1. [NCHERTFO-L] Mother's Day & Memorial Day
    2. Marianne Ordway
    3. We've had some great ideas passed on to us from some other County List's. Mother's Day is May 11th, Armed Forces Day is May 17th, and Memorial Day will be celebrated on May 26th this year. Why not take these opportunities to visit the cemeteries where your loved ones and ancestors are buried and let others know who they were and where they are interned? If you take flowers or make other memorial tributes in their honor take some photographs as share those too. If possible while paying your respects, write down some of the other names and inscriptions of the people who are in close proximity, and the name of the cemetery. This would also be an excellent month to go through your files and gather all of your "genealogy" brick-wall ancestors and list them by name, date, location - with soldiers you may want to include other info such as branch of service, rank, duty if known and let others know that your looking for those people it can be surprising to learn that someone else who is researching has just the information that you need to shed light on that ancestor and answer some long standing questions for both of you. Already this week we've had about 10 new Hertford County cemeteries added to the Archives - which is amazing and due entirely to a couple of people rooting around in their old notes! Some of these haven't been posted as yet but will probably be available in the Hertford County Archives later today. 1. [NCHERTFO-L] James Maney Cemetery
    2. Marianne Ordway
    3. The other day I had asked the List if anyone knew the directions to Maney's Cemetery because I had noticed at the Political Graveyard site that the politician Thomas Wynns (1764 - 1825) is buried there? Mr. Stephenson e-mailed me today with these directions: The directions to the James Maney Cemetery at Riddicksville in the Como section of Hertford County are as follows from Murfreesboro: Take US258 North toward the Virginia State line. About 1000 yards south of the Va. state line turn off right on NC county road 1322 and turn right on county rd. 1319 and go about a mile to where 1319 makes a sharp right which is where an abandoned NC Forest Service Fire tower is. The old Maney home is off to the right, a large 3-story house with 2 outbuildings. Where 1319 makes the sharp right the private road to the left is the old road to Maney's Ferry. The Maney cemetery is located down that private road on the left in a wooded area. it is very difficult to find and it is on private land that belongs to James Riddick. Mr. Riddick may help people find it but one should call be attempting to locate the cemetery because it is very hard to find and that is huge block of woods meaning it is very easy to get lost. Incidently my book on Parker's Ferry has a picture of the Maney Cemetery in it. 2. Susan
    3. HI all, I'm still looking for any info on Nancy Harrell born between 1790-1800 and died January 1860. She was the wife of Benjamin Evans II b about 1771, and mother to my great-great grandfather Joseph Benjamin Evans born about 1829. Nancy Harrell has been my brick wall for the longest time and to complicate things further, there was another Nancy Harrell in Hertford County around the same time who married a Smith I believe. If anyone has any information on Nancy or her family I would so appreciate hearing from you! 3. This is a terrific site Deloris - thanks so much for sharing it. I love the rare map collection in particular! Marianne ----- Original Message ----- From: Deloris Williams To: NCHERTFO-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, April 26, 2003 7:30 PM Subject: [NCHERTFO-L] Good Genealogy Resource Site I saw this site several months ago on one of my Mailing Lists and have found it very useful. I thought I'd recommend it because for one, it is FREE, and because it has some really great info to help people understand some of the things they come across while researching. it is Southeastern Genealogy Online at http://www.segenealogy.com/ Among some of the best things this site has are Links to OLD MAPS MILITARY LINKS, that take you right to pages with descriptions of the various wars, and military campaigns. OLD ILLNESSES, a complete indexed database that describes exactly what those funny diseases our ancestors may have died from. This one alone is worth a visit, I use it all of the time. GENEALOGICAL ABBREVIATIONS, if you've ever wondered what some of those old abbreviations meant in documents, this is the place to check. It is indexed. GENERAL DESCRIPTIONS, tells you what is meant by some of those words or old terms used in old documents. I'll bet you all want to know what ADMINSTRATION CUM TESTAMENTO ANNEXO or even a REVERSE INDEX means. All of this is indexed also. There are other things there that others may find useful, and I recommend especially for those having difficulty understanding some of the things they come across while researching to take a look at this site. I think it's great. By the way, I have nothing to do with the owners of the site, and I don't even know who does own it, I'm recommending this site because I think it will help someone in their researches. 1. [NCHERTFO-L] Hertford Archive Update
    2. Marianne Ordway
    3. Hi Everyone, Guy Potts has posted the transcription of the first 229 families who were on the 1860 Hertford census, and another Estate Issue to the Archives this morning. You know it is really interesting how many of these people were coming and going from other area's of the State and Country during that era. If you all happen to have any info about your various family interest and their migration patterns please mention to the Lists or post to the sites okay? I noticed one family in particular who had a bunch of children each born in a different State which definitely dispels some of the "fish bowl" research that we tend to concentrate on at times with these people during the 1800's. Getting a better idea of where they were and why can open up a world of possibilities for clues and leads. Marianne
