    3. I'll try to answer some of the questions in the below message: Hiram King Jones was my gg grandfather. His first wife was Mary Caroline Justus by whom he had 13 children. This is why you find him in the censuses with wife's name Caroline. He also had three children by a woman with the last name Johnson (coincidentally also named Caroline). Susan lists these children in her original e-mail. Then Hiram King Jones also married Sarah Elvinia Stepp and had a daughter named Mahulda. The reason you don't find Hiram listed in the Henderson County 1880 census is because he was living in Transylvania County, NC with Sarah (before they were married), daughter Mahulda (Huldah) and Andrew Johnson, one of his Johnson children. Since this Johnson son was 16 at the time, the others may have been older and on their own by this time (or they may have been younger and living with their mother). Has anyone checked 1880 census to see if they're listed as heads of household? I believe Hiram didn't marry Sarah E. Stepp until after his wife died in 1887, but he was estranged from his wife and his legitimate children. This is why she is buried at Dana Methodist Church and he is at Jones Cemetery. In his last years he came back to Henderson County and lived alone on the property of James King Jones, my great grandfather, until his death in 1910. The reason you find so many references to H.K. Jones is because there were four men named Hiram King Jones, so you have to know which one you're looking at. The one in question here is the son of Capt. Robert Jones and his wife Elizabeth McGuffie. All four were related -- if anyone wants to know I can tell you their relationship to each other and who they married.
