I am searching for any information I can get on the family of George Logan Henderson (1848 - 1928) and his wife Elura Jane Robinson. As I understand it, he was born in Henderson County but moved on thru Buncombe and then died in Swain. Any assistance appreciated. Leah McCalmon
I have the following Johnsons in my ARLEDGE-HOLBERT family database. It seems that at least 3 of the children of Leonard and Mary Matilda Dalton Johnson married into the ARLEDGE and the HENDERSON families, which were already closely intertwined. Looking for any information on my gg grandparents ... John L. JOHNSON (10 May 1831 - 1 Apr 1867) and his wife Narcissa Carver GARREN (20 Jun 1832 - 12 Jun 1896) married 27 Jun 1855 in Henderson County. In particular ... (1) John L. Johnson's burial place. (Possibly unmarked grave at Mud Creek Baptist Church or at Friendship Baptist just over the line in Polk County?) (2) John L. Johnson's Confederate service. (He appears NOT to be the John Johnson in Co. G, 56th Regiment, NC Troops, nor the John Johnson in Co. B, 64th Regiment, NC Troops. He COULD be a John Johnson who served in John Fitgerald's Co., 64th Regiment, NC Troops, which became Co. N of the 64th.) (3) Information on and contact with descendants through their children, all girls: * Ruemma Gardenia (m. Jacob Harrison) * Martha Elizabeth (m. Leroy Taylor Williams and John Sullins Banning) * Lucy Caroline (m. James Nelson Bowen) * Virginia Narcissa (m. Daniel Webster McCall). I descend through the youngest daughter, Hazzalie. (4) John's middle name. One person lists it as Leander, but sources were not available. Also, information on John's family and parents' ancestry. Parents were Lewis JOHNSON (1798-1882) and Martha HOLCOMBE (1804-1882), and siblings were: Harvey C. JOHNSON (1821-, m. Shirley Ellen KING, George Wesley JOHNSON (1824-1900, m. Rebecca Ann BLOCKER, Eliza J. JOHNSON (1828-1832), John L. JOHNSON (see above), James Harper JOHNSON (1834-1917, m. Mary E. FOWLER), and Martha Ann Caroline JOHNSON (1837-1882, m. Matthew H. TAYLOR). Personally I do not think that the Johnson mentioned in your E-mail are closely related. What I have (and replacing the carpet has misplaced some files) is as follows: Nobel Johnson, born in Limerick Ireland, came to the colonies in 1769 and settled in Rockbridge Co., VA. I have only two sons for him (he most likely had more sons and probably daughters too), James Johnson b. 16 Jan. 1761; d. 2 July 1852; married Ann [Cole]; both buried at the Shaw's Creek Campground Cemetery in Horseshoe, NC. and another Nobel b. ca. 1758; d. ca. 1800 (Buncombe Co., NC). The James Johnson buried Horseshoe had the following children: 1. Sarah Johnson m. Andrew McBrayer; 2. Hugh Johnson married; Sarah Lane Bradley; 3. Uranah Johnson m Charles Greer; 4. Malinda Johnson married John Reese; 5. Mary Johnson m. James Osborne; 6. Ann Johnson m. Nicholas Osborne; 7. Joseph Johnson m. Nancy Edwards; 8. James Johnson, Jr. married Rixey Davidson; and 9. Noble Johnson m. Charlotte Edwards. James Johnson was in the Revolutionary War. Nobel Johnson b. 1758 probably Limerick Ireland; m. ca. 1782; and died ca. 1800 (I have Buncombe Co., Mecklenburg, or present day Henderson Co. NC); married: Sarah born perhaps in Virginia. I have that they had the following children: 1. Mary Johnson b. 1 Nov. 1783; marriage unknown; 2. James Johnson b. 19 Aug 1785 marriage unknown; 3. John Johnson b. 5 May 1787 (or 1789); died 15 Nov. 1848; married: Elizabeth Alloway Strange; 5. Fanny Johnson b. 13 Oct. 1789; died young; 6. Waitstill Johnson b. 1793; married: William McCarson. Nobel Johnson served in the Revolution from Henry Co., Va. Elizabeth Alloway Strange Johnson's father's will was in Wilkes Co., NC. This leads me to believe that John Johnson and Elizabeth were likely married in Wilkes Co. and makes me suspect that the Nobel Johnson family was there also in the 1805-1810 period. Elizabeth's mother, Mary (Molly) Moore Strange is buried at Mills River Methodist Church. She lived 30 years after her husband died. Abraham Alloway Strange's probate packet is a genealogist dream. Because if the many years that had passed, heirs had to be found, some of his children had died, guardians had to be appointed, John Johnson died before the Strange estate was settled, so there is a lot of proof in this file. The point of all this is that I don't know how or if at all your Johnson men, relate to the above You wrote: <<Several clues lead me to believe that Nobel may be part of my Johnson family who perhaps lived where Henderson County is now (Rutherford Co. and then Buncombe Co. when they were there). My ancestors are William (born @ 1785), Joseph (born @ 1787), and Aaron Johnson (born @ 1792) who I believe to be part of the Edward Johnson family listed in the 1790 census of Ruth. Co. and the 1800 census of Buncombe Co. (where Hend. Co. is today). Living nearby at least in the 1790 census are the families of James Sr. and James Johnson Jr. That these three boys came from Edward's family is conjecture.>> The James Johnson of Shaw's Creek at Horseshoe apparently was not married in 1790 and I can't identify another James in the materials that I have. I do know that it is believed by the James Johnson researchers that James Johnson and Ann Cole came to present day Horseshoe from either Greenville or Newberry areas. Thoughts, comments? Am looking for info on these people from Henderson Co.They are gg and gggparents Hilliard Cantrell [according to 1910 census was age 51} was married to Minnie Revis James Madison"Jim Pap" Kilpatrick born 11/11/1858 died 3/5/1929 was married to Rebecca Orr born 1859 died 1903,they were divorced. I am looking for their parents. John Justus Sr. married Anna Gilliam daughter of William Gilliam of Maryland, looking for his parents Yatesy Cantrell Gilliam
Virginia Green, In reply to your recent roll call of your Henderson County NC ancestors, you mentioned Nobel JOHNSON who died in 1800. Several clues lead me to believe that Nobel may be part of my Johnson family who perhaps lived where Henderson County is now (Rutherford Co. and then Buncombe Co. when they were there). That these three boys came from Edward's family is conjecture. What I know for sure is that about 1810 these three brothers married three daughters of John F. YOUNG (it appears he is also listed in the 1790 census of Ruth. Co.) then living just across the state line in Greenville District, SC. They each started families then all moved to Knox and Clay Counties KY with the YOUNGs and several neighbors by 1820. Meanwhile, your Noble along with kinsmen Jacob and John Johnson, I believe, appear first in the 1790 census of the Pendleton District SC just across the line, then by the 1800 census lived near this Edward Johnson in what was then Buncombe Co. (now Hend. Co.). Do you have any information about these other Johnson families, especially Edward Johnson? How do all these men relate to Noble, and where did they come from? I was told Noble is a Rev. War veteran. Bruce Nichols Mapmaker3@aol.com

Can anyone tell me what county(ies) was Henderson County formed from? I don't find it listed as having an 1830 census, so I assume it was part of another county at that time. The computer gurus at rootsweb have been staying up late again. In the past, all messages on the rootsweb lists have been carefully archives for posterity. The catch was searching for an archived message was really difficult - even for the gurus. Well now they have a new system which will make searching much easier. You can check it out at http://archiver.rootsweb.com The catch is that it will only archive messages sent staring now. Past messages will not be a part of the system for awhile. You may join this list by addressing an email to: OPD-CD-L-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM and for the subject use the single word subscribe and for good measure, put subscribe in the body also.
