You guys have folks missing in 1870 too???? What's up with that? Mine were in Florida and MANY of my families were missing in 1870. Was it because of Reconstruction? Researching the Following families in Henderson Co.: MCCULLOCH, BARNETT, ANDERS Steph
Hi Pam: Both the Buncombe County and the Henderson County have duplicate listings. (Have not found that in other counties, but unless the family being researched is one of the duplicate ones, it probably wouldn't be noticeable). I don't think Henderson is as easy to pick out, but in Buncombe County, the first ones then repeat. I can't remember how many it is. A very good transcription is that one that the Dorsey's did for Henderson County. In addition they found that all the original copies were not identical! so located a copy that had more folks on it! Including some of my missing relatives. There were several copies made (such as one for the county, one for the federal government etc.) done by hand even more errors entered. I agree, that haven't found your relatives in a transcription you should look for the original. Or vice versa, not having found them read the census where you think they should be. Now if I could just find those folks missing in 1870! Virginia Green VaGreen100@aol.com
Hi to everyone--this list has been very quiet lately. Any good new research on Henderson County families? I've been going through the 1850 Henderson County census on microfilm, and I just need to say that Mr. John Clayton Jr, who seems to be the primary gatherer and recorder of information, must have certainly had a case of tired hands. Unfortunately for us, his handwriting in most cases is so illegible that it has led to some major transcription problems! It's essential that you go back and look at the scribbles yourself and not trust the published transcriptions if you have any question about a name, etc. Has anyone else had problems with multiple listings of the same family in this census, sometimes with different information (ages, names of children, etc.)? I've been stumped on one set of contradictory listings for what look like the same family. There will be a revision of the Old Pendleton Database cd in early April. Mailings are planned for 15 April and end of April. This database now contains over 250,000 interconnected names of those once living in the 3 westernmost SC counties (and adjacent area in NC, SC and GA), their ancestors and descendents. A map of this area can be found at http://www.shelby.net/jr/olpend/opd.jpg The descendents are shown to have found their way to most states. Further info about ordering this cd may be found at http://www.shelby.net/jr/olpend/

I just realized that the following message came only to me. So I am copying it here. This is not my family. I was just answering the question. Thanks to Glen for this information. It is more than I had found. I'd like more information about this book.Virginia Green Subj: Re: Need a death date Date: 2/13/2000 2:34:53 AM Eastern Standard Time From: Zzircon@a-o.com (Glen Lindsey) Reply-to: zzircon@a-o.com (Glen Lindsey) To: VaGreen100@aol.com I have a Index to Henderson County NC Deaths, 1914 - 1956 that just came out in book form this month. I also volunteer in the Henderson County Genealogy office. From that index - Ralph Hardy Martin's death date is 06/19/54 and gives his father as James Hardy Martin and his mother as Salley Buckner.
The Henderson County Historical and Genealogical Society at this Web address lists the book they have for sale: http://www.brinet.com/~hcgenhis/page4.html There are some early stones; it just depends on if there was a stone and if it still survives. They found old family cemeteries. For instance the Bryson cemetery contains stones from the early 1800's. Now I'm interested in the Death certificates book for Henderson County. Does anyone know where that is for sale and what the price is. Virginia Green VaGreen100@aol.com
I was wondering about this Henderson Co Cemetery book. Is it still being published? and Does anyone know the earliest death dates listed?
In a message dated 2/12/2000 10:24:22 AM Eastern Standard Time, TheKirbyTree@aol.com writes: << The man is Ralph H. Martin born ca 1900 in Buncombe Co. He then lived in A >> I have the Henderson County cemetery Book published by the Henderson County Historical and Genealogical Society, pg. 395, Oakdale Cemetery in Hendersonville: Row 6 Ralph H. Martin b. 1905; d. 1954 Mary M. Martin b. 1910; d. 1983 Of course this doesn't answer where he died, which would affect where the death certificate is filed. You might contact the above society, they have a Web Page at: http://www.brinet.com/~hcgenhis/ I think they have copies of the newspaper in that time frame; for a small fee they could look up information in their library. Lovely folks. Virginia Green VaGreen100@aol.com
Someone found my missing Ralph Martin for me. I should have come to the list in the first place. He lies resting in Oakdale and he did die in 1954. Hmmm.
I have a problem. I sent off to the archives in Raleigh for records for a death that took place ca 1954. They said there was no record. I received the information that the man died in Hendersonville around 1954. He died about a year or two before his father who died in Feb 1955. The man is Ralph H. Martin born ca 1900 in Buncombe Co. He then lived in Atlanta for years and moved back to NC. I got the information from Ralph's niece who may have gotten the place confused. She swears it was in NC and is pretty sure it was Hendersonville. Is there any other place to look to find out? Any suggestions?
Sarah Revis married Daniel Pace 6-10-1815, I am told. They had several children, one being Mary Pace (my ggg grandmother) who married John Henry Hart. Can anyone help me with the Revis family of Sarah Revis? Who are they and where did they come from? Van Davis

Please forward to any list I haven't reached yet! -Carol ROCKEFELLER LIBRARY UNVEILS NEW WEBSITE The John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Library has unveiled a greatly expanded section on the Colonial Williamsburg website (http://www.history.org), offering individuals interested in the Colonial Chesapeake the opportunity to search the library's vast collections. New features include PATRIOT, the Rockefeller Library's online catalog listing the 68,000 titles in the Library, and guides to manuscript, microfilm, selected photograph and other research collections, such as the Shirley Plantation Collection of over 18,000 manuscript items. Previously, individuals had to physically visit the library or be connected to an internal network to access these resources. "We have electronically opened the doors to our major collections by adding finding aids and the Library catalog to the World Wide Web," says Public Services Librarian Juleigh Clark. "Now, when researchers come to the Library, they will have a better idea of what we own, and we can serve them more efficiently." Other features on the website include a virtual exhibit of some of the treasures from the Rockefeller Library's rare book and manuscript collections and special indexes to articles in The Colonial Williamsburg Journal and The Colonial Williamsburg Interpreter. Of special interest is an index to the several hundred research reports written at Colonial Williamsburg over the last sixty years. Early American History Research Reports are distinguished for the significant amount of primary source material in them and for their time and place specificity: eighteenth-century Virginia. The John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Library is a research library specializing in the history and culture of the colonial Chesapeake. It is located near the Historic Area at 313 First Street and is open to the public. The Old Pendleton District (SC) Database CD for January 2000 is now (finally!) available. All current orders are in the mail or will be Monday. This cd is a project of the OPD Chapter of the SC Gen Society. Rootsweb is aware of the project and has given approval of its occasional announcement on lists where it is relevant. The database currently contains 244,000 inter-related names of those who lived in the western-most 3 counties of SC, and their ancestors and descendents. Most states and a number of countries are included in its thousands of listed locations. This version of the cd will be immediately available thru February. The next expected revision of the cd will be for the April revision of the gedcom. The low-cost cd is offered to support continued contribution of data to the already huge database, as it becomes increasingly inconvenient for many to download/import it. The download/import access is still within the reach of many. Currently, it is essentially impossible to import the gedcom in FTM using other than WinNT. Usable FTM databases are provided for FTM 5, 6 and 7, and for a number of other popular genealogy programs. Full details may be seen at http://www.shelby.net/jr/olpend/ (hit reload/refresh to be sure you're seeing the current webpage revised 1/23/2000).
I'm looking for information on Jonas Case who left North Carolina sometime between1800 and 1840. Bill Case
Nell Jane NELSON mar. a BROWNING (or maybe a LOCKABY) and was living near E. Flat Rock ca,1863. They had twin daughters, one named Lucinda ("Lou") and the other, I believe Essie. The husband either deserted or refused to serve in the CSA. The family tradition says that the family was "dirt poor" and Nellie had no one to care for her and the new borns. Family tradition goes on to say that a bounty was put on the husbands head. One day, when Nellie took food to the woods where her husband was hiding, a neighbor named Donaldson followed her and fatally shot the husband. Nellie went on to remarry a JEWELL and then lived in Anderson Co., GA. I have never been able to ID who is my ggrandfather. Can anyone suggest ways for me to search for him? Bounty Lists? Local newspapers of the time? Thanks for your help. Perry McCrary Pmcc123@aol.com
I would like to apology to those of you that had problems getting to the ONElist web page to join our group. TransylvanCoGenList@onelist.com is the email address to ONElist, however I am on AOL, and if I cut and paste that same address onto my web browser, the browser will convert it to <http://www.TransylvanCoGenList@onelist.com> which is the URL for ONElist. I should have realized that other browsers, and other servers worked differently. The URL to use to join our list is, <http://www.TransylvanCoGenList@onelist.com> Again, I apology for this, Wylene
SOMETHING NEW AND EXCITING FOR TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY GENEALOGY IN 2000! To get the new millennium started off with a bang, all researchers of Transylvania County families are cordially invited to join a unique new on line genealogy group founded just this week. The new Transylvania County genealogical group is named TransylvanCoGenList@onelist.com but this is not your typical e-mail list. There are many excellent lists and message boards already in place, but this new concept offers much, much more. The first and foremost objective of this new group is TEAMWORK within a community of researchers. Together and through open sharing of research problems and solutions in a warm, encouraging, friendly atmosphere, so much more progress can be realized by all of us. After all, most of us are either cousins of some degree or cousins-in-law, so why not get together as a family, albeit a huge and extended one, and work on genealogy together ! Beyond sharing knowledge through the day-to-day queries and answers, we hope our members will share with one another the more personal side of family history. Most of us have discovered rich short stories, anecdotes, and captivating tales of our ancestors. We invite members to share those with the group as well! The more we learn about all of the people in the communities in which our ancestors lived, the better we will understand the lives of our own ancestors. And we just might discover some new lines of cousins to boot -- even an ancestor or two! We want this to be a genealogical community in which EVERY MEMBER feels free to share, to ask questions, to offer ideas, to participate. Unlike so many lists in which a handful of people do the talking and a hundred or so folks stand quietly and anonymously in the shadows watching and listening, we want EVERYONE to participate, both newcomers and oldcomers alike. Everyone has something valuable to contribute, even if only thoughts and ideas. And many of the oldcomers have valuable research techniques and skills to share that could lead to brick walls being broken down. We look forward to many, many Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness. Upon joining, all new members are asked to introduce themselves to the group, share surnames, ancestry, research areas, even research problems. A few dozen long-lost cousins might be waiting with open arms. After all, we genealogists love nothing better (except for finding a lost ancestor) than finding lost cousins who are researching the same families and ancestors. It pays to advertise! To encourage communication of benefit all members, all replies and responses (unless controversial or problematic) are to be posted openly to the e-mail list. As a further benefit, an easy to use archival system is in place allowing members to review and retrieve earlier postings and discussions. By preserving what we do today, we can help researchers of tomorrow. To provide a healthy, productive, nurturing community, a set of fair and equitable rules for community conduct and behavior have been established and will be provided to all new members upon joining. The group is operated by three monitors who possess a combined total of almost three quarters of a century of research into Transylvania County families. The list managers always stand ready to help members in any way possible. We warmly invite you to join us in this exciting new project. Please spread the word and let’s unite all researchers of Transylvania County families! Join us on this rich journey into the past, OUR past! To start your FREE membership today, go to: <htt://www.TransylvanCoGenList@onelist.com> and follow the instructions. If you encounter any problems joining, please e-mail me and I will gladly help. Looking forward to welcoming you to YOUR new community! Yours, Wylene Alston, List Owner and Community Co-Manager
