Dear List, The following query appeared in the March 1999 issue of the Henderson County North Carolina Genealogical and Historical Society Journal. Volume XIV Number 1, Page 20. "Who is this early Henderson County man? This 1855 tintype was found in the papers of the Morris home. He may be Kinson Middleton . . . Thank you. Please respond: Pam Clark, in care of the Society's office . . . ." The address is: Henderson County Genealogical and Historical Society Inc. 400 North Main Street Hendersonville, North Carolina 28792 (828) 693-1531 I contacted the Society office but they do not have an e-mail address for Pam Clark. I have scanned the picture and will be glad to e-mail to anyone who requests a copy. It appears to be a Xerox copy of the tintype so the quality isn't good but identifiable. Sincerely, Dennis Smith hdennissmith@earthlink.net
What a wonderful picture! thanks for sharing. Unfortunately I don't know a soul in the picture. Virginia
I thought y'all might be interested in seeing this picture and was wondering if anyone could help identify additional individuals in it. It is a picture of the old Hendersonville Curb Market from around 1926-27. Warning the file is large and may take a while to download. http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/far4/CurbMarket.jpg My grandfather Allan Reed and uncles Ed and Bob Reed are in the picture as well as George Hill. Does anyone know who the others are? -Floyd Reed
There will be a revision of the Old Pendleton District SC Database cd in September. All open requests will be filled at that time. This is a project of the OPD Chapter of the SCGS. Additions are made continually. Downloads are updated monthly. The cd is currently revised about twice a year, dependent upon demand. OPD consisted of the three westernmost counties of SC, so was adjacent to a dozen modern SC, NC and GA counties. Map of the surrounding area showing modern counties in all 3 states: http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/opd.jpg For an excellent map of the district when it *was* a district see the SCROOTS 1820 Mills Atlas map at http://scroots.org/1825pendleton2.html or for a larger, clearer but slower loading version: http://scroots.org/1825pendleton3.html As of August, the database contained 275,000 names (ancestors, residents, descendents) and 93,000 marriages, and almost all of these are cousins somehow. For more info about the downloadable database, OPDC/SCGS, and the cd, see http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/ Note: this is a new address.
hello, I e-mailed you about one of my ancestors last week. I hope it was the right place to e-mail about that. If not I apologize. I saw your name behind the e-mail from other people and their searches and just assumed. Is there a way I can get my question posted? I am on rootsweb's mailing list.
Good morning from Durham, NC. One of my brick walls is Angus Edgar Maynor (my grandfather). Sandra in Durham, NC Angus Edgar Maynor was born 6-6-1877 (in Chatham or Moore County, NC) to William Judson and Mary Ann Phillips Maynor. He married Virginia Ella O'Neal in Durham on 6/29/1902. Angus was a barber and he disappeared from Greensboro in 1927. In 1933, his wife was granted an absolute divorce. Prior to his disappearance, the family frequently visited a Stokes family in the Hendersonville area. Also, he may have worked at the Gates City Barber Shop in Greensboro for a couple of weeks in 1941. His daughter, Mary Rebecca, received a telephone call in 1960 from a man who said he was a friend of Angus' and that he had heard that Angus was in a rest home somewhere in or around the Asheville area. However, Rebecca was not able to find out any more information, or to locate Angus. Rebecca was living in Durham, NC at the time.
Hello, I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of one of my ancestors, BOB EDNEY? All I know is that he is my great-great maternal grandfather, who had several children. Two of the childrens names are Samuel Mills (died in 1966), and Mark Mills died in (1968). BOB EDNEY was possibly listed in the 1850 or 1860 census report. BOB may have also been bi-racial, and he may have also been a lynching victim. Does this ring a bell to anyone? He is the first link to starting my family tree research. Thanks.
I am a descendant of John Johnson who married Elizabeth Strange. They lived in the Mills River Section of Henderson County. I have no real proof of your questions, but I would be interested in the answers. It is my understanding that Noble Johnson died about 1800 in Buncombe County. I have been told, although I have never seen the material, that there is information about this family in the "Amos Medford Material" in the Pack Library in Asheville. It is my understanding, although I have no documents to proof it that my John Johnson was the son of Noble Johnson, the brother of James Johnson. My John Johnson named a son Noble (or Noblet, or Nobel, as it is often found) It is also my understanding that James and Noble Johnson were the sons of yet another Noble who was the first and came to Virginia. On the deeds some of the witnesses are John Johnson. However, my ancestor would have been too young to be witnessing a document in 1792. So who would that John Johnson have been? Another brother perhaps? I have Noble Johnson b. ca. 1758, Limerick, Ireland; came to the US in 1769 with father and settled in Rockbridge co., VA. He married about 1782 and died ca. 1800 (location given as Buncombe Co, another as Mecklenberg Co, NC) His wife was Sarah [maybe Johnson?]. He is in the DAR Patriot Index, having served as a private in the militia in Henry Co., VA. I have the following children for Noble Johnson (1758-1800) 1. Mary Johnson b. 1 Nov. 1783 2. James Johnson b. 19 Aug. 1785 3. John Johnson b. 5 May 1787 (or 1789); died 15 Nov. 1848; married Elizabeth alloway Strange 4. Fanny Johnson b. 13 Oct. 1789; died young 5. Waitstill Johnson b. 13 Nov. [or 25 Nov.] 1793; married William McCarson. Virginia Green VaGreen100@aol.com Tampa, FL

Has anyone any ideas where I could find copies of a Methodist newspaper published about 1854-1857 in Ashville or Hendersonville North Carolina? The paper was called the HERALD OF TRUTH and the editor/publisher was a man named William Hicks. I have checked with the NC Archives and they have no reported copies. I can't find any reported holdings on Worldcat. According to THE RELIGIOUS PRESS IN THE SOUTH ATLANTIC STATES by Strong, William Hicks was editor of THE HERALD OF TRUTH. The paper was only published about 1855-1856. Strong did not list any institutions as having copies. I also have checked Batsel & Batsel's UNION LIST OF UNITED METHODIST SERIALS and they have no list of any surviving copies. If any copies survive I suspect they may be in some small college that is or was historically affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal South denomination. It is also possible copies could survive at some congregation Hicks was affiliated with or with some of his descendents. If anyone is aware of any extant issues I would be grateful to hear from you. Mike
Does anyone know if the local Hendersonville paper, the Times-News, is on line? I would like to read it if they have a web site. I tried www.times-news.com and was connected to a newspaper in MD. Thanks for your help.
Dear friends, I've spent the day today transcribing and summarizing the contents of both estate files from the NC Archives (Polk County Loose Estate Files) regarding the Estate of Benjamin HOLBERT. It's a fascinating story about a mountain farmer who had a large family and then died without a will. Benjamin and his wife Charity Stover Holbert owned hundreds of acres in what became known as Holbert's Cove in Rutherford (now Polk) County, NC, on Big and Little Cove Creek, which run down parallel to the Green River Cove between Saluda and Silver Creek, as well as on neighboring Alton's Creek. Benjamin Holbert was considered quite wealthy before the Civil War--his real and personal property in 1860 was valued at $10,510, which evidently included the eight slaves he owned (Augustus and Kizzie and their children, probable ancestors of most of the African American Holberts in the western NC area). In contrast, Benjamin's value in 1870 was a mere $675. Benjamin and Charity had 13 children: Sophia (m. Stephen Cowart), Sarah (m. Greenberry Arledge), Joseph (m. Elzira King and Mary Newman), Rebecca (m. Isaac Arledge), Jacob (m. Nancy Dimsdale), John (m. Maden Foster and Rebecca King), Benjamin (m. Mary Carroll), Abraham, Caroline (m. John L. Thompson), Elizabeth (m. Clement Arledge), Charity (m. Thomas Newman and Ransom Foster), Francis (m. Elizabeth Jones), and Mary Pamela (m. Eli Jackson). Abraham seems to have been killed during the Civil War; Sophia, Sarah and Benjamin died young, but left children who were heirs to their grandfather's estate. [Sarah Holbert Arledge was my great-great-great-grandmother, mother of John Pinkney Arledge, who was the father of John Aden Arledge, the father of John Thomas "Jack" Arledge, my grandfather.] What complicated matters was that Sophia Cowart, Jacob Holbert, John Holbert, and Benjamin Holbert Jr. all moved to the Cherokee County, Georgia area (which is, ironically, the county in which I now work). The fact that the family was divided between Georgia and North Carolina made the settlement of the estate quite complicated. These documents contains information about Holbert, Arledge, Coward/Cowart and many related and neighboring families that lived in the Green River/Holbert's Cove area of Polk and Henderson Counties of NC, such as Newman, Jackson, Hamilton, Foster, Thompson, Bradley, Justice, Nelson, Morris, etc. It also contains some of the estate papers of Ambrose Mills, though I'm not sure why--they don't seem to be in any way connected to the Holbert case, and may have been misfiled. To view my summary of these documents, please click on http://www.geocities.com/wilson_pam/holbert/BenjaminHolbertEstate.html Please let me know if this is useful to you and/or if you have any questions. My fingers are tired,, but it feels good to have actually completed a task like this that I've been trying to get done for a couple of years!
