    1. MIDDLETON, GOODLETT, HOOPER Families and Chicora River
    2. Dennis Smith
    3. In 1998 Jean Prather posted to the Middleton List the 1812 will of Middleton PRATHER . Middleton Prather lived in Greenville District, SC and within his will gave the following description of his land: > a tract or parcel of land containing one hundred acres or their about and runs as follows to-wit, beginning on post oak John Middletons corner on a tract of land originally laid out for George Salmon, thence with said Sallmons line to Chicora River thence up the meanders of said river on the west side to the mouth of the first branch that runs into said river, thence up the said branch and the hollow therof to the head of a hollow that leads to John Middletons still house branch, thence with the said John Middletons line to the beginning, . . . < It seems to me that this is referring to the area that, on the 1800 census of Greenville Dist., SC shows George Salmon on page 247 - line 128 and a John Middleton next door on page 247 line 129. I downloaded from ROOTSWEB an annotated copy of the 1800 Greenville Dist., SC census compiled by Peggy B. Chapman, September 1998. Within this, Peggy Chapman mentions Chicoroa River (other slightly different spellings) several times. I saw that there were several people noted as living on the Chicora River. Among these were: Elias Earle (p. 243 line 4) 1787 betw. Saluda & Checkaroe George Salmon (p. 247 line 128) next to John Middleton William GOODLETT (p. 247 line 142) 1785 Checkeroa R. water Saluda Alexr McHenny whose land included the mouth of the Checkoroa R. David Goodlett (lived P. 243 line 2) just two houses from Elias Earle. Thos. HOOPER from Lunenburg Co., VA is at p. 245 line 83 which is within the above group. Back in 1998 I searched the web for a Chicora R. in Greenville Dist. and found nothing. Yesterday I thought to look at the 1825 Mills Atlas (copy in Greenwood County, SC Library) and sure enough it was noted. The map was prepared by George SALMON, surveyor, in 1820 and shows the following re: Chicora - The North Fork of the Saluda is marked: "N. F. Saluda or Checkero R." To me it is now clear that what is currently called the North Fork of Saluda was once called the Checkero R. and that the names had become interchangeable by 1820. Where the N. F. Saluda enters the Saluda River the map marks "McElhenny Shoal". This would be in keeping with the note above of McHenny owning the land at the mouth of the Checkero R. A list member had mentioned that the grave of William GOODLETT had been discovered in the 1940s at Marietta, SC. This is consistent because the North Fork of Saluda (Checkero) R. runs very near Marietta. Kinson Middleton, Rhoda Middleton and Baylis Middleton lived on the headwaters of Mush Creek. This is consistent with having a possible connection to the above John Middleton because (according to my DeLorme map) the headwaters of Mush Creek come very close to N. Fork of Saluda (Checkero) R. just East Northeast of Marietta. According to my map this is about 5 miles West of Hwy. 25 and about 5 miles North of Hwy 414. Kinson Middleton sold his land in 1855 to a William Trammell. There is currently a Trammell Rd. in Greenville Co. which runs North/South only a few miles (possibly only 2 or 3) from the headwaters of Mush Ck. A list member mentioned that her RUSSELL family lived on Hoopers Creek in Henderson Co., NC. There were several Russell families in Greenville Dist. in 1800 including a George Russell (p. 253 line 380) who was not too far away from the others mentioned above. I hope this is helpful to someone and would like to hear from anyone who can provide additional information relative to these families and the area of Greenville Co., SC where they lived. Thank You, Dennis Smith hdennissmith@earthlink.net

    1. MIDDLETON, GOODLETT, HOOPER Family connection circa 1800
    2. Dennis Smith
    3. Dear all, A couple of days ago I posted an email concerning Narcissa BECK ( b 1827 SC) md (1842 Henderson Co, NC) Kinson MIDDLETON (b 1817 SC). While compiling it, I stumbled onto something that may be a big clue. (Or it could be just another blind alley.) I want to throw it out to you and see if anyone has any thoughts, suggestions, additional clues, etc. Kinson MIDDLETON who was born 9 Feb 1816 in SC and died 12 Dec 1885 in Henderson Co., NC married, about 1840, Narcissa BECK who was born 19 Sep 1827 in SC and died 28 Apr 1907 in Henderson Co., NC. From about 1841 until they sold the farm in 1855, they lived in Upper Greenville Co., SC on Mush Creek near the families of Rhoda Middleton and Baylis Middleton. Their homes were also quite near that of Richard GOODLETT. The significance of this is that Richard GOODLETT was a grandson of Robert GOODLETT (b 1720 Scotland d 1804 in Spartanburg Co., SC) who married about 1750 Nancy Ann MIDDLETON (d 1818 Spartanburg Co., SC ). Richard GOODETT's parents were William GOODLETT (b 20 Aug 1760 Frederick Co., VA d Jun 1836) and Nancy HOOPER. (William was a Lt. in the American Revolution) I have been told that the Goodletts, along with some other Goodlett and Middleton families moved from Frederick Co., VA to Spartanburg Co., SC in 1774 and that Nancy Ann Middleton was a daughter of a Thomas Middleton. This information I have been kicking around for about three years feeling that ancestors of the Middletons on Mush Creek came from Frederick Co., VA along with the Goodletts. The Goodlett information is probably pretty solid based on William's having been granted a pension. The latest mini-revelation resulted from reading the following in "Shadows of the Past: The Middleton and Related Families", Contact Mrs. Lucy W. Middleton, Tuckasegee, NC. "The earliest Middleton of Western North Carolina was Thomas who came up from the Pendleton District of South Carolina, WITH ANDREW HOOPER, BROTHER OF ABSALOM AND CLEMMONS [emphasis mine]. He entered 100 acres of land for 55 shillings in Buncombe County with a date of entrance of April 1807. It was Land Grant 2252. He along with his wife Deborah Horry Middleton remained on the property until March 4, 1820 at which he sold it to Mr. Henson Queen for $30.00. . ." These HOOPERs were Uncles of the Richard Goodlett on Mush Creek! (His mother's brothers.) Among items I found on the internet is a summary of an annotated transcription of the Federal Pension File of Absalom HOOPER ((c) 1999 by a.c. goodwin) A copy of the file costs $33.00 but is probably well worth it since she says that it took eight years for the widow to provide enough evidence to secure a widow's pension. In the summary she says that Absalom enlisted in the SC Line. After the war he lived first in GA and then in Upper South Carolina and finally in Haywood (now Jackson) County, NC. From the HOOPER-L archives (posted by BreckCombs@aol.com) comes information that Thomas HOOPER b abt. 1747, Lunenburg Co., VA, third child of Obediah and Massilva Hooper died 18 Jul 1826 at the home of his sister Nancy GOODLETT in Greenville Co., SC. There are other items on the internet which provide similar information. What have I shown? The Middleton Families on Mush Creek are almost certainly connected to the Goodletts on Mush Creek. The Goodletts on Mush Creek are definitely related to the Andrew HOOPER who was traveling with Thomas Middleton when he came to Buncombe Co., NC in 1807. The Hoopers came from VA to SC then to Haywood Co, NC. A recent posting by ikwebster@mindspring.con related to a Thomas Middleton and contained references to Lunenburg Co., VA. Perhaps these Middletons were traveling with the Hoopers of Lunenburg Co., VA. Perhaps this Thomas is the same Thomas who went to Buncombe Co., NC in 1807. Thanks, Dennis Smith hdennissmith@earthlink.net

    1. Narcissa BECK ( b 1827 SC) md (1842 Henderson Co, NC) Kinson MIDDLETON (b 1817 SC)
    2. Dennis Smith
    3. Narcissa and Kinson are both "brick walls". So far as I know, no one has yet discovered the parents of either, even though there is a fair amount of recorded information relating to them after 1840 and in spite of there being several researchers working on the mystery. I apologize in advance for the length of this posting and the cross posting to several lists. Any information, clues, guesses, etc. related to any of these people will be greatly appreciated. After more than 30 years of on again, off again searching - I'm about ready for a breakthrough. ------------------- Narcissa BECK was born 19 Sep 1827 in SC. The US Census shows her father as having been born in VA and her mother as being born in SC. Narcissa died 28 Apr 1907 and is buried, along with her husband in the Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery, Henderson Co., NC. [Note: Both of the following books, "The Heritage of Henderson County, North Carolina", Vol. I and "Henderson County, North Carolina Cemeteries", state that Narcissa was born in England. I suppose this is possible but it appears to me to be unlikely since she and her parents ware born in the US as shown on the Census.] About 1840 Narcissa BECK married Kinson MIDDLETON who was born 9 Feb 1816 in SC and died 12 Dec 1885. He is buried with her in Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery, Henderson Co., NC. [Note: I have a marriage date of 22 Apr 1841 but don't remember where I got it.] In 1840 Kinson and Narcissa's first child, Annbury, is born in SC. ("Henderson County, North Carolina Cemeteries") [Note: I have a birth date of 25 Apr 1842 but don't remember where I got it.] On 8 Nov 1841 - Kinson purchased from Alfred TURNER 100 acres of Land on Mush Creek in Upper Greenville Co., SC. [Note: The Rhoda MIDDLETON and Baylis MIDDLETON households are very near this farm and their ages indicate they may be his siblings.] On 24 Feb 1842 - Kinson Middleton and John W. McCARSON posted a bastardy bond in Henderson Co., NC because Kinston Middleton was charged with being the father of a bastard child of which Sarah BENNISON was the mother. On 24 May 1842 Kinson Middleton purchased from John W. McCARSON the items which would be needed to set up housekeeping. Items ranged from beds and other furniture to silverware, cattle, books, tools, two hundred weight of bacon and even a clock. (Recorded: Henderson Co., NC Deed Book 2, Pg. 264.) A subscribing witness to the transaction was Robert R. BECK. It appears to me that Kinson may have bought at an Estate Sale. Since another BECK was involved in the transaction, I think it is likely that either Narcissa's parents or some other of her relatives had recently died. On 13 Nov 1846 Kinson purchased from Penel GILREATH, for $250.00 cash, 100 acres on Mud Creek in Henderson Co., NC (Recorded Deed Book 4 Pg. 46) On 23 Dec 1847 Kinson Sold the above 100 acres on Mud Creek to James BRITON for $360.00. Subscribing witness was Nathan DRAKE. (Recorded Henderson Co, NC Deed Book 4 Pg. 37) [Note: both the purchase and the sale were recorded in 1848 with the sale being recorded first. The entry for the sale did not include a release of dower by Narcissa.] On 6 Sep 1855 Kinson sold the land on Mush Creek, Greenville Co., SC to Wilson TRAMMELL. Before 1864 Kinson and Narcissa moved to a place on Big Willow Creek in Henderson Co., NC from whence they moved to TN in 1864. [Note I don't know if they moved directly from SC to Henderson Co. because I haven't found them in either the 1860 or 1870 census records.] In 1864 they moved to Knoxville, Knox Co., TN, where they lived about 20 miles below town, for several years before returning to Henderson Co., NC. [Note: I have seen the figures of seven and twelve years] Three children married and remained in TN. (James W. Middleton to Martha G. King 10 Dec 1868; Nancy Middleton to Peter F. STALLINGS 12 Jul 1866; Susan S. Middleton to Benjamin KING 20 Sep 1868. They had a total of 15 children and, according to the 1850 census, at least the first eight were born in SC. Mary (Middleton) ORR, a daughter of Kinson and Narcissus Middleton, wrote a book entitled "The Experiences of a Soldiers Wife in the Civil War". I haven't located a copy of the original but a portion (possibly all) is included in "ORR and Related Families", Compiled by Bert J. Sitton. The booklet provides some possible clues related to Narcissus. 1. A Mrs. MATHERS, who lived about one half mile from Asheville (in 1864) knew Kinson and Narcissus and greeted Narcissus affectionately as "Sis"; a reasonable nickname for Narcissus. 2. On the way from Asheville, NC to Morristown, TN and somewhere between Marshall and Big Ivey they met an unnamed woman who warmly greeted Narcissus as "Sis". Mary says that the woman was "one of mother's schoolmates". [Note: I don't know where "Big Ivey" is located but it must be near where the French Broad River crosses the NC/TN state line. Probably Haywood Co., NC.] 3. In Knoxville, TN, a Col. John BAXTER vouched for the loyalty of the Middleton family. From the book "The Story of Henderson County" by: Sadie Smathers Patton, it seems that this is the same as Judge John Baxter of Henderson Co., NC (who once fought a duel at Saluda Gap). It is of interest that Narcissa and Kinson named their youngest son John Baxter Middleton (b 20 Jan 1864 m Matilda Shipman). [Note: I would like to know more of the relationship, if any, between Kinson Middleton and Judge Baxter. ** The 1830 NC Census counted three BECK families in Haywood Co. and two in Buncombe Co. The 1840 census counted four BECK families in Haywood Co., none in Buncombe Co. and one in Henderson Co. Henderson was formed out of Buncombe in 1838 so I believe the James BECK in Henderson Co. in 1840 is the same James BECK who was counted in Buncombe Co., in 1830. Kinson was counted in Henderson Co. in 1840 and living not very far from this James BECK. Living not very far from Jacob BECK in Haywood Co. in 1840 was a John MIDDLETON. In "Shadows of the Past: The Middleton and Related Families", Contact Mrs. Lucy W. Middleton, Tuckasegee, NC, it is written that a Thomas MIDDLETON came up from Pendleton Dist., SC and entered a land grant in Buncombe Co., NC with the date of April 1807. He later moved to Habersham Co., GA where he died in 1830. It appears that this Thomas was an ancestor of, or at least related to, the John MIDDLETON who first appears in the Haywood Co., NC census in 1820. This connects the Middletons in Haywood Co. with SC and possibly with the Middletons in Greenville Dist., SC Thanks, Dennis Smith hdennissmith@earthlink.net

    1. EDNEY's from EDNEYVILLE, NC, to AL., and MS.
    2. Hi, I first want to apologize if you get doubles, because I am posting this to several different list. I have just found another 'new' cousins, who gave me more information. He states that my first EDNEY, John, supposedly owned a ship, and brought prisoners over from Ireland. He had two sons, who were part-time preachers. Their names were Samuel and Ishmial/Ishmal, (I am guessing at this spelling). One of the brother's was going to preach for the other brother to marry a STEPPE? Something happened and the brother's had a misunderstanding of some sorts, and the families split. I do not know which 'side of the fence' mine fell on, and don't care! Anyway, a Samuel EDNEY, born 1734, married Mary KELLY? They had Robert EDNEY, born Feb. 15, 1770, locations, I don't know? Then Robert married and I maybe have a generation missing, because I have down that his son was Millard EDNEY, born Jan. 1857, in Fayette Co., AL. Millard was my great great grandfather. He married Martha Virginia 'Jennie' LAVENDER. Milliard (railroad man) and Jennie had: (probably not in order) John EDNEY, Claude EDNEY, Carniff Ruff EDNEY, (railroad man) Mary Keifer EDNEY, Carey Austin EDNEY, (miner) Wilma EDNEY, and Drue EDNEY. Mary Keifer EDNEY was my great grandmother. She was born 1881 in Columbus, MS. Mary Keifer EDNEY married Hezakiah Clark GORE. Millard and Jennie's family relocated around the Birmingham Jefferson Co., AL. area. Can anyone help me with any of my EDNEY's. I know that Martha Virginia 'Jennie' EDNEY and Claude EDNEY are buried in Elmwood Cem. in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL. But I can not find Millard. He may have been sent back to Fayette Co., AL, where he possibly was born? Seeking any info and help on any of these names. Thank you in advance. Sincerely, Kay R. MUSIC

    1. Bicknell / Beaver
    2. I am researching the Beaver family of Yancey County, North Carolina and have found no connection in Henderson county to the family in 18 years of research until tonight when I found two bro-in-law (Benjamin Bicknell - Henderson P.O. page 848 1860 census and William Bicknell - Bowman's Bluff page 706 1860 census) in an on-line listing. Looking for anyone with a connection to either the Beaver or Bicknell family. I would be especially appreciative if someone who has a copy of the 1860 census would be willing to share information from the above 1860 census entries. Happy to share what information I have on these families. Thanks for checking. Leah M.

OPD = Old Pendleton District of SC, which was located in the area of the modern counties of Oconee, Pickens, and Anderson. See map showing its proximity to Henderson Co. NC: http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/opd.jpg This was on the migration route and it is common to find the ancestors to the north and descendents to the south. The OPD database is a project of the Old Pendleton District Chapter of the SC Genealogical Society, which is available by download or cd and contains some 300,000 interconnected names. Text files of the surnames and locations included can be downloaded in zipped form at http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/ Links are found there for the OPDC/SCGS, gedcom download, cd, etc. The OPD list is SC-OLD-PENDLETON-DIST-L John Robertson

    1. Revised Old Pendleton District Database cd
    2. John Robertson
    3. The next quarterly (usually) revision of the Old Pendleton District Database cd will be mailed on 15 March 2001. All outstanding requests will be filled at that time. The OPD Database is a project of the Old Pendleton District Chapter/SCGS and is based on a single gedcom containing over 300,000 names of those who lived in the OPD (+ancestors+descendants). The OPD was comprised of the area now occupied by the 3 westernmost counties of SC. Adjacent counties are GA and NC in addition to SC. To see more about the OPDC/SCGS, see: http://oldpendleton.homestead.com/index.html To see more about the inexpensive OPD database cd, see: http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/ This cd project had prior approval by Rootsweb before its initiation.
