    1. [NCHALIFA] Kehukee Association

    3. Ann and Bea, I believe the minutes referred to were probably the minutes of the Kehukee Association's Quarterly Meetings which were held at various churches in the Kehukee Association's region. There is a bound book of the photocopied minutes in Heritage Place (research room) at Lenoir Community College. It has been a while since I last looked at it, but they were the minutes of the quarterly meetings of the region and did have a lot of information and names in them. I do not remember the earliest dates. I do not remember if there was information specific to Kehukee Church in them, but would imagine that there would be mention of Kehukee Church's delegates to each quarterly meeting. I do not remember that it was called Primitive Baptist, I think it was just Baptist, and cannot tell you all the churches it included. I was looking for Autrey's (Otter's) Creek Primitive Baptist Church and did find it mentioned in the minutes. Perhaps you could e-mail a query to Heritage Place for more information on this. Acording to Chronicles of Pitt County North Carolina, three early churches of Pitt County were in the Kehukee Baptist Association. These were: Red Banks Church (1754/55), Flat Swamp Church, and Great Swamp Church (1795). I also found mention that Rountree Meeting House in southern Pitt County was in the Neuse Association. Other associations mentioned were Toisnot Association of Regular Baptists and Nahunta Association, which merged to become Contentnea Association. Both Contentnea and Kehukee were anti-missionary. Some of the congregations which emerged from anti-missionary churches were due to a difference of opinion on the mission of the Church. One source mentioned is by Biggs (a Martin Co. name), Joseph, "A Concise History of the Kehukee Baptist Association." I am GUESSING that maybe Kehukee Baptist Association accepted in its membership the Baptist churches mainly north of the Tar River. Although Red Banks Primitive Church, originally located north of the Tar, is now located south of the Tar. I am again GUESSING that the early churches may have been called Baptist, and the newer churches emerged from them sometimes with different philosophies, adding distinctive adjectives, such as Missionary Baptist, Free Will Baptist, Pentecostal Baptist, etc., while the old churches were referred to as Primitive (i.e. "first" or "original") Baptist. (Please no quotes on the above, since I am merely guessing.) I have been told that Elon College has a repository for Primitive Baptist Records of North Carolina. You might also try Wake Forest University's Archives. They have a good search engine. - Trish >From: Slowm@aol.com >Date: Sun, 6 Feb 2000 13:21:14 EST >Subject: Re: [NCHALIFA] Kehukee Baptist Church >To: NCHALIFA-L@rootsweb.com > >Hello Ann, I apologize for being so long in responding to your query re: >Kehukee Baptist Church in Halifax Co NC. >I also have an ancestor who attended this church and in 1995 I wrote to the >church inquiring about their records.
