Fishing Creek rises in east Vance County and flows North east in Vance and Warren counties, and southeast and south in Warren County, to the Franklin-Warren, Halifax-Nash, and Halifax-Edgecombe County lines to a point approx. 7 miles north of Tarboro from where it flows south to enter Tar River. It appears as Great Fishing Creek on the Moseley map, 1733, and on the Collet map 1770.

Hi all, I am new to the list, and am looking for information on Leart King, who married Medora Bryant abt.1890... Any information appreciated...... Mary Jackson
Are there any on this list who are researching the MILLS family of the Halifax County area? My line resided in Northampton, Halifax, Edgecombe, and then Wake Counties, NC. My ancestor, Naaman Mills (1757-1835) served in the North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution, under Col. Benjamin Seawell of Halifax. Naaman Mills was the son of Abraham Mills. Naaman's children were: John, Matthew, Nathan, Britain, Shadrack, and Lucretia Mills. William A. Will hello Shelby. My husband was born in Hollister North Caroline and he knew the Qualls. He does not recall Mr. Qualls father of Tracy or his mother name. His parents lived in Essex, North Carolina which is a little ways out of Hollister. Tracy was the magistrate of Halifax Co and his wife Ethel was post mistress of Hollister. There children were Quentin, Margaret, Jimmy and Carlton. Jimmy is about my husband age which is 63 and Carlton is maybe 66 or 67 and as far as he knows both are still living. The last time my husband heard Quentin was store manager in Portsmouth, Virginia and does not know if he is still living The store is Sears and Roebuck. Margaret have no idea about her. Tracy also owned a store in Hollister. Tracy was burned up in his house which was located across the street from store. Ethel wasn't at home the time of fire. I met both of them and they seems liked very nice people. My husband used to run around with Jimmy and they attended school together. -----Original Message----- From: crockersmith <crockersmith@lexcominc.net> To: NCHALIFA-L@rootsweb.com <NCHALIFA-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, October 06, 1999 12:46 AM Subject: [NCHALIFA] Qualls 19903 >TRACY QUALLS >B: 18 Mar 1903 >D: Dec 1968 >Lived: Hollister, Halifax, NC > >I would like info on Tracy. >Thanks. >Shelby > >* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * >http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/Choir/3843/ >CROCKER/QUALLS/ROSE/PRIVETTE/PERRY/WRIGHT/ >WINSTEAD/BRIGHT/WILLIAMSON/FISHER/JOINER/ >ROSS/GODLEY/CREDLE/FLOWERS/HORN/BENSON >NC Counties: Edgecombe/Nash/Franklin/Johnston/Beaufort/Hyde/ >Shelby Jean CROCKER-Smith >* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * > > >==== NCHALIFA Mailing List ==== >==== NCHALIFA Mailing List ==== >This list is brought to you by the dedicated folks at Rootsweb. >To ensure that it continues, please visit them and subscribe at >http://www.rootsweb/com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html >Jesse Lawrence, listowner, jmljr@flash.net > >============================== >Caught an error in the Social Security Death Index? >Use RootsWeb's POST-EMS to post a note about it! >http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/ >

I am searching for the parents of Arthur West and or Henry. I believe Henry to be the father or brother of Arther , any help would be appreciated. Thanks.>From the West Registar by Letta Brock Stone I extracted the following from pg 408-9. Decatur Co TN. There moved to Tennesee about 1812 CAPT. HENRY WEST, who had been in the War of 1812. He was born in Halifax District of NC, but who his parents were is not known by his descendants. There was a Dempsey West in the Family. the census of 1790 of Halifax District contains the names of Dempsey, William, Arthur, and Nathaniel West. Henry West was born about 1775, and moved to Scott Co, KY after his marriage to Nancy Lyle, who was born in NC. His stay here was short, and he soon moved to Decatur Co TN. His son John was born there in 1813. The children of Henry WEst and Nancy Lyle were: 1. John; 2. Irving; 3. William; 4. James. 1. John West married Martha Ashcraft in TN. They had one son and seven daughters, two infant sons having died: 5. Thomas Henry b 1846; 6. Helen b 1848; 7. Lulu b 1855. 5. Thomas Henry, one of the best known bankers of St. Louis for almost half a century, was in business in Louisville, New Orleans, and Mobile before he came to St. Louis in 1880. He married Florrie Terry in Memphis in 1868, and after her death in 1898, married Virginia Hodges. He had several children, some of whom are now living in St. Louis. mr. West had a prominent place on the Board of Commissioners of the Exposition and took an active interest in the promotion of art in the city. At his death in 1926, Mr. West left the following children: John Terry, Allen, Thomas H., Florence (Mrs Howard Eltinge), Walter H., Carroll (Mrs. Hugh McKittrick Jone), Frances H. A grandson Allen West Jr., is studying for the Foreign Service in Washington DC.

My RAWLS family went to NORTHAMPTON county, NORTH CAROLINA from NANSEMOND county, VIRGINIA. FISHING CREEK is mentioned in HALIFAX records as well. I have a map somewhere that shows FISHING CREEK in that time period and has been very helpful in placing my family. Of course RIVERS and CREEKS are some of the most helpful tools in genealogy in regards to placing land. Most people when they had a choice chose waterways to settle for not only water, but travel as well. Checking out the neighbors on all records your family was on is critical in finding more of your own family. And the neighbors deeds and wills often help in finding the location or dates of sale for our own family as well. FISHING CREEK seems an important location for many families. thanks. Mr. hale, fishing Creek is in Granville co NC. or it was once Granville co. Our ancestors names were surname, Vincent. Peter, Alexander, and William. have records of land transactions about 1797 to 1803 that mention some of their lands being on fishing Creek. they were living in Granville Co NC. Hopes this helps.
