Thank you for your time, Barbara Freeman - -------------------------------------- Subject: Newspaper Abstracts There is a new mail list and web site at Rootsweb!! This list is for the submission of newspaper abstracts. Newspapers are a wonderful and often overlooked resource for those researching their families. Many fascinating and descriptive details can be found about the lives our ancestors from the businesses they frequented to the hardships they endured while trying to build a new life in a new land. Even letters home from men at war detailing their daily accounts were occasionally printed for all to read. Over the years many records were lost or destroyed in fires, floods and natural disasters. Newspapers include notations on births, illnesses and deaths that occured before local and state governments began keeping records. Other items such as tax rolls, local military rosters, court notifications in chancery and probate, separations and divorces are also given mention. Many newspapers managed to survive the test of time and can now be found at most state libraries on microfilm and are available thru inter-library loan for viewing at your local library. To view our web site, click here: Newspaper Abstracts Home Page (http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~newspapr/) And to join our mail list send an email to: Newspaper-Abstracts-L-request@rootsweb.com or Newspaper-Abstracts-D-request@rootsweb.com (if you prefer the digest version) and in the body of the message write only the word: subscribe Feel free to pass this information on to other lists. 2. Donna, Thanks for the reply. I will watch for your ancestors in my search. If I come across any information on Nancy DEMPSEY and Dempsey POWELL, I will let you know! 2. Fred Butts
    3. Louis on the information you have for Halifax county are any mention of the Charles D. Butts family. In 1870 census data he had a rather large farm in the Bushy Creek area. Had a large family to. Thanks for any help Dr. W. Fred Butts buttsroots@mindspring.com I have heard of that swamp area before but I can't remember where its at. Usually when mention with two creeks or rivers etc. the swamp could be in the same area. Close maybe to the headwaters of one or both. ----- Original Message ----- From: <GTTforgood@aol.com> To: <NCHALIFA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 26, 1999 11:07 AM Subject: [NCHALIFA] Geography Lesson > Fellow Halifax researchers: > > Some of you may remember that I am researching the CARPENTERS of Halifax County abt 1730 to 1800. William- I'm sorry I do not have any concrete information (at this time) - BUT - I would be very interested in anything you discover. I'm descended from a Dempsey POWELL (b. ca 1740, d. 1793) who is said to have married (ca 1765) a Nancy DEMPSEY (b. ca 1745 - d. ca 1775). Dempsey POWELL lived in Halifax Co., NC, then Wake Co., NC and his children moved to his land grant in Bedford Co., TN - not far from Sumner Co. (I have relatives there also.) I've been trying to find Nancy's family and some proof of their marriage. By the dates you suggest for George, he would be of age to perhaps be a nephew of Nancy - if they are related. I have not been able to discover many DEMPSEYs in either northern NC nor southern VA - so chances that our lines connect seem pretty good. If I discover anything on my end, I'll be sure to forward. I've put you in my DEMPSEY query base. Good luck - hope there's a break. Donna Warner Los Angeles, CA dwarnerla@aol.com

    2. Fellow Halifax researchers: Some of you may remember that I am researching the CARPENTERS of Halifax County abt 1730 to 1800. I have obtained the abstracts of Edgecombe County deeds that are in Halifax (pre-1758) and the Halifax deeds. The land in question is QUANKEY CREEK (both Little and Big) and Quankey Swamp. I have a 1972 county map of Halifax Co. and find the two creeks which run into the Roanoke but where is Quankey Swamp? Could someone please let me know. Also I am convinced that Issac Carpenter's father is William and that James REEVES, the KINGS, and WHITES are related. Does anyone have info relating to these individuals. Thanks Louis Carpenter

    1. [NCHALIFA] George DEMPSEY, NC, TN
    2. Looking for information on a George DEMPSEY (DEMPSY) who may have been from Bertie or Halifax County. He was born about 1780. He married Mary Polly BRIGANCE. He later moved to Sumner County, TN. I noticed in the mid 1700s there was a George, William, and Melvin Dempsey in this county. In the next 2 generations, these 3 names were also in Sumner County, TN. I suspect the ones in Sumner County were named after the ones found earlier in North Carolina. I have also been told of Indian ancestry, and I noticed the DEMPSEY name in Bertie and Halifax counties is associated with Indian and/or "Free Person of Color". Also, anybody see a marriage between a Brigance and Dempsey in either of these counties? I would appreciate any information available. Thanks very much in advance! William Tidwell Pulga65245@aol.com

John H. Wood b. 1815 ( a mile or so north of Scotland Neck) and d. Feb. 1888 at his home near Weldon. He was married to Martha A. Curry b. 1817 near Hobgood. Looking for their date of marriage and his parents names. 2. Looking for their date of marriage and where buried. Her sister's (Minnie Summerell Lucas) obituary mentioned the Summerell family cemetery not too far from the Weldon United Methodist Church in Weldon. Does anyone know where the cemetery is. I am need of positive proofs on the above information. Also, The Roanoke News dated July 17, 1924 carried an article on some land in Halfax County that was first granted by King George III in 1742 to Marmaduke Kinbrough and by hereditary transmission and intermarriage, became the property of William Whitfield (1759- 1806), who willed it to his sons John and William, John turning over his half to his brother William not long after that. William lived there till his death in 1846. Part of the land was sold after his death, the home tract remaining in the family and going to the widow of a grandson of William's, who was living on the home tract. An acre of this tract was a "graveyard" in which generations of the Whitfield family were buried. Does anyone in Halifax County or elsewhere know where this land and cemetery are located? 4. Joshua Jones (1756 - 1820) m. Amaryllis _______? (1759 - 1820) was granted land on 20 Dec. 1791, on the north side of Little Quankee Creek next to Richard Woods. 2. Ed. I am looking for the Kings. My great grandmother, Rebecca E. King, resided in Halifax Co., b.1848 and died 1930. Her King bible lists Edward, Thomas, Nancy, Rufus, and Catherine , all born in the early 1800's. I think her father may be one of the men listed. I remeber as a child going to a large King farm near Roanoke Rapids. Hope some of this is useful.

    3. Dear List, I am new to this list. I thought I would see if anyone knew some information, of the above named John Cooper of Halifax, I would like any information on his children, and grandchildren, spouses. What I am trying to find is the parents and wife of my gggg-grandfather Samuel Cooper, b. 1790 Halifax, NC d. 186? Searcy Co., AR. John's Will names his children and some spouses, but not all of them, or perhaps they were not married at the time. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
