Does anyone have info on a John Lockhart who would have been in Halifax during the Revolution. He signed a supporting affidavit for my ggg grandfather Isaac Carpenter. I am wondering if there is anything out there on the Lockharts for Halifax. Thanks Louis Carpenter
For a long time, I have tried, without success, to identify the parents of my gggrandfather, Elijah Hillman Green, b. Dec. 16, 1812 (but not certain) who migrated to Arkansas from Halifax County, NC in 1845. He married Malissa E. Neville, dau. of Thos. R. Neville, on Sep. 16, 1834. I have accumulated much basic information - deeds, wills, census information, etc. but cannot say conclusively that a particular Green -of the many potentials - is his father, although I do have my hunches. I recently spent a day and a half in the Archives in Raleigh but still no answer. I will very much appreciate having recommendations from list members for a professional genealogist or a capable amateur, preferably in the Halifax area, who could take on this research project. I am more than willing to pay the going rate for good help. Thanks for any help. Norvill Jones 3568 Trinity Dr. Alexandria, Va. 22304 703-370-1910
Donna: Thanks for the answer on Joseph Lane and Sally Brickell, he not being the son of the Joseph Lane mentioned earlier: Joseph and Patience Lane. Marcia
<<Joseph Lane Jr (1710-1776) and Patience McKinne (1712-1762) lived in the Halifax County area. I'm trying to locate a record of their marriage, which occurred in 1730. >> In "Southside Virginia Families" Vol. II by John Bennett Boddie, pgs. 290-302 'LANE of SURRY and SUSSEX, Virginia' - there is a great deal of information on this LANE family. I do not know how much of it is verifiable by other sources, but this is what he says: Joseph LANE, evidently the son of Jilian & Joseph LANE, Sr., married Patience, dau. of Maj. Barnaby MCKINNIE, Sr. of Halifax Co., NC in 1730 (NC Col. Rec. 11.317,519) Joseph's eldest son John LANE had a dau. named "Jilian". Maj. MCKINNIE m. Mary, widow of Jacob RICKS and daughter of Jeremiah EXUM, Justice of Isle of Wight, VA. Mourning MCKINNIE, sister of Patience, m. John POPE. There is a close relationship between the POPE and LANE families - they later migrated together to Georgia. Jos. LANE & Patience his wife sold to John HARDY, Gent. 200 A. of land in Edgecombe for 200 pds. Land patent by Benj. HILL & by him convyed to Jos. LANE 1 Apr 1743 (Halifax DB 3:213) --There are pages more, that I do not have completely transcribed. If you do not have a local copy of the book, please let me know, and I'll send what I've got. Also - referencing a followup inquiry on Joseph LANE and wife Sally BRICKELL - according to Boddie (and some other docs I've seen) the Joseph who was son of the above Jos. & wife Patience, married Pherebe (Ferribee) HUNTER, lived in Wake Co., NC then went to Morgan Co., AL where he died abt Nov 1825. I have a full, original copy of the will - it is also posted on the usgenweb site for Morgan Co., AL. However - ANOTHER Joseph LANE died in Wake Co., NC in 1798. I believe he was a cousin, as there were MULTIPLE Joseph LANEs in the area...you may want to check this LANE site: http://www.genweb.net/~bowers/lane/thomasl.htm However, other researchers on the genforum have noticed some inaccuracies in this info. Perhaps it will lead you in some good directions. I do know what happened to the children of Joseph and Pherebe Hunter LANE - because they married into a BURT family I was tracing - if this applies to anyone. Regards Donna Warner Los Angeles
Hi Tonja, This is a "shot in the dark" response to your posting on the Halifax County Mailing List !! The earliest known Hale in our line is Thomas Hale, born between 1732 - 1839, in either North Carolina or Virginia. Thomas married Patience _____?_____, in either North Carolina or Virginia, maybe even Halifax County, NC. Thomas died in Halifax County, NC, and Patience probably did also. I've pasted the first couple of generations of Thomas Hale below for your information. My "shot in the dark" question concerns Thomas Hale's wife, Patience. We do not know anything about her parents. Your posting includes your ancestors, Joseph Lane, Jr., (1710-1776) married to Patience McKinne (1712-1762). Given the name "Patience" in your line, and the compatibility of dates and locations, do you see any possible connections to our Patience who married Thomas Hale -- through maybe a daughter of Joseph and Patience, possibly a nephew or niece of either one, or whatever ?? I've copied this Email to my cousin, Gary Hale, in Denver, who is the "real" early Hale researcher, so feel free to include him on any response. We are both descended from Thomas Hale's son, Ogburn Hale. We've "hit the wall" on both Thomas and Patience, so I thought I give you a try. Any information would be appreciated. Do you know where Joseph Lane lived, before coming to Halifax? I see he was already in Halifax by 1760, according to the Land Grants book, by M. Hofmann. So many of these people came from Virginia. I, too, would like to know something about Joseph Lane, though he has to be younger, or junior, in Halifax. He married a Sally Brickell. Was wondering if you knew anything about them. Who was Sally? Becky: Thank you for your response and suggestion. I have researched Northampton County and all the Warrens there. I still haven't been able to link my John Robert Warren alias Jack Warren. I really appreciate your suggestion and your willingness to take the time to write. John was a student in Halifax Co. school district 14 in 1843 when he was about 7. In 1847, he was a student in the same school district (age about 11). In the 1850 census, he was living with Tempy Drew, age 16. In the 1860 census, he was an overseer for Turner Bass. He enlisted in the Scotland Neck Mounted Rifles in 1861. I know much more but will leave it at that. One of my theories is whoever his father was died and his mother remarried a Drew. Or Tempy was a relative or a good neighbor who took him in when his parents died. Whatever the truth, he spent most of his early life in the Scotland Neck area. We know from family records he was born in Halifax county. Again, thanks for your response. An independent suggestion is often the key. Jo: Thank you for your response to my query. I corresponded with Gail Shearin a few years back. I will check her web site. Thanks. Howard
Patti: Thank you for your kind respone. Robert E. Warren and John Robert Warren were not brothers. They may have been related, but if they were, I haven't a clue as to how. I have researched Thomas Warren and his wife Rosanna Shearin. For a long time, I thought they were John Robert's parents, but found out I was wrong. I have researched John Robert for years and know much about his life including his Civil War duty. I have not been able to identify his parents. Thomas Warren was married twice. He had a son Henry by his first wife. It is possible he was John Robert's father. However, I have not been able to find information to establish this. I have also researched the Higgses and have published a chapter on this family. By-the-way, John Robert was called Jack. I can help you with Thomas Warren's family and I also have researched the Statons. If I can help you, let me know how. You were very gracious to answer my query. Thanks again. Howard

Looking for any descendants of John BRICKELL, or any of his family. Would like to know where John was before 1780. He died in Halifax, in 1789. His wife was Nancy (NELMS) TILLERY. Was this his first wife? John, Patsy, Abigail, Sally, William, and Jeremiah, were all listed in his will. Were all of these children Nancy's? Thanks, Marcia Bourdeau 7720 Lakeshore Port Huron, MI 48059 mjbordo@aol.com
