    1. Re: [NCHALIFA] Gray & Devereux, Whitley, NC
    2. Hello, I'm seeking some advice on my ggrandparents,Richard and MargaretWest. Recently ,I found them listed on the 1860 Federal Census as having been married within the year of the census being taken. It also stated that my ggrandfather was a mattress maker and that he was born in Warren county however my ggrandmother was born in Halifax county in 1842. My question is, would it be wiser to write to the Halifax courthouse to see if there were a marriage bond or the tax department to see if I could obtain more inf on them or her. I'm still trying to find out who her parents were. Please advise as to which one of these documents would give me the most information. You see, Richard was never enslaved but she was and I have not been able to find who the slave owner was. Rose r4866@aol.com

    2. Hi Brenda, I saw that you have Arrington as one of your surnames. My grandmother Willie Beatrice Arrington Woodley and ggrandparents Phillip and Pattie Arrington were from Nash County,NC. My grandmother lived in Hilliston and I found Pattie living with her daughter and son-in-law in Nashville(Billy and Effie Hilliard) in the 1920census. Do any of these names sound familiar? The Hilliards are deceased however they have a daughter named Margaret Ann Boddie who lives somewhere around Nashville, which is in Nash County. Please reply if any of these names sound familiar. Surnames in my family are,Arrington,Woodley,Herman,West,Mitchell,Harris,Wilkes Rose/r4866@aol.com

    2. Halifax --> Bertie --> Nash/Edgecombe Counties, NC My grandmother's grandfather Iicson (Isom) Gray married Lucinda ? and is from the Washington/Bertie/Beauford County (NC) area. Iicson is a Native American, I think Cherokee or Tuscarora Indian. My Granny says he's Cherokee. Their children are Stephen, Henry, Harriet Lucinda and William Gray. His son is William Gray, which William later moved to Halifax, Edgecombe and Nash Counties where he married George Anna Whitley. George Anna is the daughter of Tempie Devereaux (Halifax/Bertie Co.) and Wright (Right) Whitley (related to the Whitleys' in Nashville, Spring Hope, Black Creek (Wilson Co), NC . Wright's mother was a Whitley and his father was a Vick. George Anna used to live in Black Creek just across the railroad tracks. Tempie's (Tempe) parents are Hopey and Alston. Tempie, her parents, brothers and sisters ( Cato, Cloe, Alfred, Nancy, Mary & Mariah) were slaves of John & Thomas Devereaux (Halifax/Bertie Co.). I was told Tempie had a boarding house in Nashville, NC that was were William and George Anna met and married. Tempie was buried at Social Union Cemetery (Nashville, NC).William worked for the Atlantic Coastlie Railroad. William and George Anna's children are Benjamin (Bud), Eva, Stephen, Tempy Ann and Lena Gray. Lena (my grandmother) married James "ST" Robinson (Wayne/Wilson Co.). James is also known as "Buddy", his parents are Louise Barnes and Anderson (Andrew) Robinson. After Anderson's death, Louise married Milton Sanders. Surnames from this union are Roundtree (Rountree), Sanders. Coley, Jones and Jenkins. Tempie has a son named Blount Whitley that is listed as living in Nashville, NC. Please contact me if you have any info whether big or small. Feel free to pass this information on to someone you think will be able to help me. 2. DEar Florence: Thanks for the information on the Tillerys. If you do spot anything on Thomas Tillery, I would really appreciate it. Would love to know when he married Nancy Nelms. Thanks so much, Marcia

I have a lot of graves but I am not sure if I have your Tillery's I also have the history of Tillery, North Carolina and I will have to look it up for you. Florence
