    1. [NCHALIFA] Byrd, Bird for Chris
    2. << I am interested in communicating with anyone on the list researching any Bird/Byrd families. Chris>> You might want to take a close look at <A HREF="http://home.texoma.net/~richard/ledbetter/Book/Lew-book/lewis.htm">L edbetter Book by WILLIAM CHARLES CUDLIPP, II</A> REV. DR. LEWIS LAURIE LEDBETTER AND HIS WIFE CORNELIA JONES BIRD (BYRD) LEDBETTER and Their Known Descendants with emphasis on the family of their daughter EMMA EUFAULA LEDBETTER LEE MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER. Additional material on the Byrd, Hankins, Howe, Lanier, Daniell and Bostick families will be added in time. Chapter 3. Byrd Family Notes. Our Bird(Byrd) Family of South Carolina and Georgia The earliest proven Bird in our family tree is Captain Daniel Bird of South Carolina. His origins are unknown at this time, but a good guess is that he came from Virginia around 1765 to the Edgefield County (Old 96 District) of South Carolina. There is an outside possibility that this Byrd family originated in Maryland and not Virginia. This will require more investigation. Before 1860, the name was usually spelled Bird. I have found the name spelled both ways in letters and documents. Therefore, for consistency, I will use the spelling Byrd for names and when found in documents or on the Census, Bird. On the 1830 -1860 Censuses, Rev. Elijah spelled the name Bird but, on his children's gravestones, the spelling is Byrd. There's more on line.

    3. Hello, My name is Chris and I am new to the list. I am interested in communicating with anyone on the list researching any Bird/Byrd families. My ggg-grandfather was Griffin Bird b. Dec.18,1806 and d. Nov.30,1884. Griffin was married to Sally(Sarah) Perry in Nash Co.,N.C. Feb.21,1831. I am trying to find who Griffins parents were and from what Bird line he comes from. Most of the info I have on him places him in Nash Co.,N.C. but I have come to a dead end and thought I would try following some of the migratory routes and see if I can come up with anything. I am not familiar with Bird/Byrd families in Halifax Co. i.e. the purpose of this post. So if anyone has any info on any Bird/Byrd families I would be truly grateful for any info that you might share with me. Some particular names I am very interested in are James Bird, Wiley Bird, Kesiah Bird, and Coly Bird. You may contact me at angela@cocentral.com Thanks, Chris

    1. [NCHALIFA] Re: NCHALIFA-D Digest V00 #49
    2. Dear Molly, Doggett, if you want to begin at the <beginning> in this country is found in Virginia's Northern Neck, as early as 1694, although in the example I am giving you this is the only appearance of this surname in this particular volume. This is from Gertrude E. Gray's VIRGINIA NORTHERN NECK LAND GRANTS Vol. I, p. 6. (Gray has 4 volumes, arranged chronologically). These were NN grants by Lord Fairfax, although I have read they were not strictly grants--a legal technicality--don't worry about it now. I'm leaving out a lot of the detail from the published abstract. Patent Bk 2, p. 70 Thomas Thompson of Lancaster Co. died siezed of 81 A in Christ Church Par., Lancaster Co. part of 700 A granted Nicholas George 15 Feb 1652...... [details of how the land is being treated now -- being assigned to someone else] - On Corritoman R., Seafold Point, Benjamin Doggett, George's Cr., adj Elmore George. 24 Nov 1694. If you can find these volumes listed below in a large libary near you, perhaps a University library or some rich community college, take a look to find the distribution of the name at the time of the tax lists. Volume 3 is the index. The volumes by Love and Schreiner-Yantis are called THE 1787 CENSUS OF VIRGINIA. They are really tax lists and are better than the earlier censuses. They include what later became Kentucky and also West Virginia. You MAY find this surname Doggett later in Prince William Co. and then perhaps Fauquier Co. and/or Culpeper Co., VA. Lots of people left Virginia after the Revolution. Most North Carolinians in the central part of NC came from Virginia. Those in or around Rowan Co. came from lots of different places--Pennsylvania, Maryland, and lots of Scots-Irish there. I venture to say Doggett was an English name. Oh, yes, if you find any Doggetts marrying Kempers in the above-named VA counties, let me know. Evelyn W. Wallace southern California
