    1. [NCGUILFO] Re: PACES OF GUILFORD CO., NC
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. Dear Tim, Here is another strange tie. The YOUNG PACE who moved to Mecklenburg Co., NC, in late 1850's married a NANCY WALLS there in January 1858; she may have died in 1888 of cancer of the womb as there is a NANCY PACE in a Charlotte, NC, cemetery that I think is the same one. She appears to be by herself in a poorer section, and I suspect that her husband had died before her, but I don't know where he is buried. I got the estate papers for Young Pace from 1898 (says he died about 10 years earlier), and names his children, including a John in Phifersville (I've never been able to locate it), Abner in Mecklenburg (b. around 1858-d.1900), Augustus in Ft. Mill, SC, and two girls Fannie (?) and Mary. I have tried to locate researchers of Augustus Pace in SC, but no luck. In NC census reports, there is a David Pace in both Wake Co (Buffaloe District 421). and Guilford Co.(147) in 1830. The David Pace family in the Guilford 1830 census shows himself to be 40-50; 2 sons under 5; one son 5-10; his wife is age 30-40; one girl under age 5; one girl 5-10; one girl 10-15. These children's ages might allow one of the boys (age 5-10) to be my ABNER PACE, but I can't confirm it. In 1840 the David Pace in Wake Co. is still there (135), but the one in Guilford has disappeared--died/deserted? The one in Wake Co. (Buffaloe District 647 154) is still there in 1850. By 1870 a David Pace is in Wayne Co NC (Nahunta Twp160); another DP in Meck Co (4 W. Charlotte 099); and another in Henderson Co (GreenRiver Twp 270). I note that possible relatives (also apprenticed orphans) Needham and Young Pace were gone from Guilford shortly before 1860 and turned up in Meck. Co. for the 1870 census, along with ZILTHA /ZELPHA PACE, born around 1798. She therefore could not be the ZILTHA WOODARD who married JOSEPH PACE in Chowan, NC, in 1788. She had an "idiotic" son named David, however, who went with her to live with Needham and Young Pace in Mecklenburg. It has crossed my mind that she might be a PACE by birth instead of by marriage, and thus could be an aunt of Needham and Young instead of their mother. In March 1810 a David Pace had married a Kitty Wall in Wake Co., bondsman Nelson Wall. I tried the Wake Mailing list for information and no one seems to know anything about this couple (either of them). I think we might have two different David Pace's here, one perhaps whose father was James Pace and the other possibly the son of William Pace of Guilford Co., NC. Either that, or David Pace certainly got around, fast. Your message says that JAMES PACE SR. was born in Edgecombe, Prince George Co., VA. Is this Edgecombe VA? You also said that he died in Prince George Co., VA, but is buried in Edgecombe Co., NC. I am confused about where he was born. I wonder if the Wall or Walls name spelling has any significance.
