    1. [NCGUILFO-L] LDS Ancestral Files

    3. > Beginning March 1st, the LDS church has decided to release Family Search > to the internet for a 3 week trial basis at: http://www.familysearch.org > > They would like everyone to try it out and respond! Happy day! We > aren't certain exactly how it will be laid out. May only start with a > few of > the programs...but it's a start! I hope it won't get out of hand. I hope that genealogy "beginners" are made aware that the Ancestral File of the LDS Church is notorious for the erroneous material that has been entered [most certainly by well-meaning folk and probably somewhat better than the material found in the commercial "Ancestry" and "Family Tree Maker" files] and that the Church does provide a disclaimer with the data: "The information [in these files] has NOT been verified against any official records. Since the information in Ancestral File is contributed, it is the responsibility of those who use the file to verify its accuracy." Although the Ancestral File does contain extensive errors and NO DOCUMENTATION, nonetheless this will be an interesting experiment and a huge time-saver to those who use these files. Jim W.
