Last night on the Antique Road Show they had a man with his gggrandfather's parole paper from Appomattox in April 1865, signed by his commanding general (Gen. Wilcox of Confederate forces) . This particular one had the stamps to authorize safe passage through federal lines to some place in the South; because he was an officer he got to keep his horse, but enlisted personnel had to walk or hitch a ride on a train. I wondered how many of these are still in a soldier's family. They are valued at $5000.00 at auction, if anyone cares to sell.
