Hi everyone, I'm new to the Guilford County list and am hoping someone can help me. I am researching the MCFARLAIN/MCFARLAN/MCFARLAND family in Guilford Co. in the late 1700's - 1860. The furthest I have back is John MCFARLAND b. 1800 in Guilford Co., m. a Sarah D. ??? b. 1806, Guilford Co., (only know this from the census) on the 1850 census they had 8 children, first one born in 1826, last one born 1850. On the 1860 census they had 2 more children, born in Guilford Co. On the 1870 census they are nowhere to be found. On the 1880 census, Marion Co., IN, I find one son, no one else in this family. I have been told there was a big migration from NC during the Civil War. I have checked Civil War records, and nothing, yet the males were of the age to serve in the Civil War. I have checked the 1870 census records for many states that they would have travelled through and can find them nowhere. Is it possible they were in transit when the 1870 census was taken? Where could a whole family go? I realize the females in this family could have gotten married and I don't know how to find them. I am on the NC-L, MCFARLAND-L and IN-L, MARION-L, no one seems to know this family. I have searched every genealogy site on the web and still nothing. Can anyone point me in the right direction for further research. I don't know where to look next. Thank you for reading this and any help anyone can offer. It is greatly appreciated. I am more than willing to share what small amount of info. I have. Ruth in NC e-mail: RLugowski@aol.com
