How would the 1870 or 1880 census in have been taken? Was a printed questionnaire given out before census day and just picked up on census day? Who actually filled in the census form?--the census taker or the householder? If it was the census taker, did he stand there and question the party answering his knock on the door? Or did he merely pick up the completed form and compile his report later? My questions arise from wondering if the census taker took his answers from a perhaps hastily completed form supplied by someone in the household, or did he attempt to verify in some way the answers on the questionnaire.
