Searching for Civil War soldiers has been made considerably easier with the 1996 publication of the multi-volume reference set, The Roster of Confederate Soldiers 1861-1865, ed. by Janet B. Hewett, pub. 1996 Barefoot Publishing Co., Wilmington, N.C. In this reference set, soldiers are listed alphabetically by surname, with state, regiment and company given. If your soldier served in NC, you may then consult the multi-volume reference set, North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865, published by NC Archives & History, which details each N.C. regiment and lists the soldiers in each of the companies' regiments. *Note: I have found some soldiers listed with companies in NC Troops: 1861-1865 who were *not* listed in The Roster of Confederate Soldiers. If you can determine which regiments and companies were formed in the area where your soldier resided, I would suggest you consult NC Troops: 1861-1865 even if your soldier was not listed in The Roster of Confederate Soldiers. These reference sets are available at NC Archives in Raleigh and at many large libraries.
