I found a marriage announcement for Joseph Shelton and Nancy J. Gillaspie in the The Patriot in 1839 in Guilford Co., N.C. The names and time periods match. According to the Drew Co. AR 1860 Census, six of their seven children listed were born in NC, yet I cannot find them listed on an 1850 NC census when the oldest child would have been 8 years old.
