I had e-mailed the Register of Deeds about the online records that used to be available, and which are not available right now. He tells me that some people in the law enforcement community were worried about potential identity theft, and so the information was pulled off until the Register of Deeds office can get a system set up where you have to register to view the records. He expects that system to be operational in a few weeks. In the meantime, he said they are going to start a restoration project on old marriage licenses (pre-1900) and old deeds. He expects that process to take 2-3 years to complete. He was very complimentary of the genealogy community, and I get the feeling that he is trying to make it easy for us to continue to have access to the records we want. I have no problem with not putting information online about living individuals, because that's my practice anyway. But it will be nice to have access to information from the early decades of the 1900's and prior to that. He promised to let me know when that registration system is operational, and I will send word out through this mailing list.
