    1. Re: [NCGUILFO] marriage bonds
    2. Thanks for the feedback! I'm getting a definite "yes!" from the group. I've been toying with this idea for some time, as I want to go beyond just a list of names and the date of the bond. I will set up the pages to handle this over the next few days, but I'll have to keep working on those over the coming weeks. This is my Christmas present to the list. (wink) I will send the mailing list another e-mail with the links to the pages, and information regarding guidelines for contributions for the pages. I have taken digital images of the bonds for my own family line, but I obviously don't have all bonds. And I don't want to chew up too much server space while keeping things legible, so let me play with this a bit, and then I'll let you know when you can start sending anything you want to contribute, and what approximate size the files should be for those. I do have photo software, so I can crop or downsize a file if I need to do that. PDF versions of scans are also acceptable, but I can't alter those. And some items will scan into Word documents, etc. As long as it's true to the original, and legible, I will try to work with it. For anyone heading to the State Archives in the next week or so, and who wants to collect something to send in, you can take a digital camera and use it (without flash) to take a photo of individial marriage bonds. Try to get an image of the reverse side as well. Scanners were not allowed in the Search Room the last time I checked. I'll also accept scans of photocopies, or good images from microfilm. I like the digital photos better, since those show the wonderful color tones of the ink and the paper, but photocopies will still allow people to view the actual bonds and handwriting for themselves. Gradually, I'd like to have digital photos of all bonds, but that will take time. The idea for now would be to list the known bonds, and then link names to the images as we acquire those in the system. The next time I go to Raleigh, I'll try to get a copy of the list of bonds they have there and compare it against the lists that are on the library website and in other locations. I also need to double-check and see if there are any still at the Guilford courthouse. Just as a reminder, keep in mind that the date of the bond is not necessarily the date of the marriage, or even absolute proof of a marriage. I will address that issue further at the top of the pages.
