After talking with the Register of Deeds a few months ago about the need to keep some records available online, and his promise to let me know when the system was operational again, I just received a notice from the Register of Deeds today that the Vital Records system, which was taken off the web in July, is now back up. However there is now a registration system, which is what a lot of the local counties have started using. For further information, go to this webpage and look for the link to "vital records abstracts" : _http://www.co.guilford.nc.us/services/index.php_ (http://www.co.guilford.nc.us/services/index.php) That will take you to a page where you can log-in, or click on the link to register. I have started the registration process myself, but it takes either a visit to the R.O.D. office or a mailed form accompanied by a photocopy of an ID. In other words, you won't get to view this stuff before Christmas, unless you live in Greensboro and want to go downtown. For the rest of you, you can start the registration process, and then you will get an e-mail with further instructions and an attachment with the necessary form. We have all the identity thieves in the world to thank for this (!), but at least we're going to be able to access things online again.
