    1. Re: [NCGUILFO] James Smith/ Mile Creek/Isaac Widows/Philip Roudy 1799 -- PS
    2. Looking up land grants, I see Phillip Roddy listed as having two land grants, one dated 1779 and one dated 1785. The 1779 one is for 200 acres on the waters of Mile Branch and Mordecai's Creek, adjoining Joseph Peace. The 1785 one is 100 acres by his former corner at Sarah Mendenhall's line, and adjoining Dennis Towmy. Mordecai's Creek flows into Richland Creek, in SW Guilford County. There are three grants for Isaac Widdows and one for Isaac Widdows, Jr. (and, of course, they may not be related, but probably are). There are two other "Widdoss" grants, both on the waters of Deep River. One of Isaac's grants was on the waters of Mordecai's Creek, and mentions Phillip Rudding (grant #1262). Grant #2057 also mentions Mordecai's Creek. Grant 2024 is on Deep River. Isaac Jr's grant (2026), entered in 1798 and issued in 1800, is on the waters of Deep River and mentions James Smith. So, we're definitely talking about the SW corner of Guilford County. Powell's Gazetteer doesn't even mention Mile Branch, as there were probably dozens of them in the state, if not hundreds. There's no guarantee this is the same branch, but a modern NC DeLorme atlas of NC shows a Mile Branch of Richland Creek in the same area -- just to the NW of exit 113 from I-85.
