And if there is anywhere a list of people in those cemeteries, I'd be ecstatic..........have been looking for a grandmother but have so little to be on except Guilford Co and a death date of 8/27/1813. ------------------------ I do have a list of cemeteries on the county website, cross-referenced to the publication that would have the list of burials. There are undoubtedly a few cemeteries which have escaped notice to date, but I think the majority of them have been catalogued. As for a list of the people buried in those cemeteries, again, we run into copyright issues. GCGS has published several books on the burials in the cemeteries in the area, and I can't copy from those. If you visit the county website, you will find the names of a few people who can do look-up's for you. Until someone or some group of people come forward and volunteer to start doing their own readings of the cemeteries, I doubt I can do much more. I don't have the time to do that myself. If someone volunteers, please give me the readings from left to right, one row at a time, so we can preserve an idea of physical proximity between those of different surnames. That can be very helpful. I will say that one of the things I am contemplating for 2008 is setting up a very limited experiment in terms of gathering data and photos on the earlier burials in Guilford. And I do mean "early." Guilford is a heavily populated county, and the burials must run well into 6 figures by now. Stop and think about whether you'd want to tackle that project. Guilford is not a rural county! I've actually already done a little experimenting with a page or two, as I have my own photos and data, collected on trips to Guilford (I live an hour away), that I can use without infringing on GCGS copyrights. Let me get this marriage bond project up and running, and get through the holidays. In the meantime, please use the look-up's. I'll announce when I am ready to tackle the next project. There are a some sites that link tombstone listings to pictures. I think the best of these is Find A Grave. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi A person can request a picture of a tombstone, and then an e-mail about the request is sent to volunteers within 10 miles of the cemetery. In another NC county, I requested a couple copies of pictures of tombstones that I knew existed, because my grandfather had taken grainy pictures of them back in the 1950s. A volunteer not only photographed those, but about 500 other tombstones in the cemetery (that is not the norm). I agree about preserving photos of early tombstones. I have requested a number of photos from various locations of tombstones of ancestors and their siblings, concentrating on the earliest ones. From readings that were taken by people 30 or 40 years ago (especially small family cemeteries), volunteers that have gone to some of the cemeteries today have not been able to find the requested tombstone among those readable, and/or find piles of broken tombstones. Without the photographic record, future researchers have to depend on the readings done in the past. I have also received some pictures which are very clear, and show that published readings done in the past had some errors in dates. Although I have numerous Guilford County ancestors, they all either left before they died, or tombstones do not survive. At least I have not found them in either GCGS publications or in the NC pre-1914 Cemetery Survey. Rick Saunders No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
