(1) read books on local history, your family might be mentioned. (2) tax records (3) obits if they are available in your time period (4) newspapers for local happenings such as marriages (5) trace brothers/sisters of your ancestor to locate information. Even several generations past the one that you are searching might mention a grandfather or uncle. Some information we may never find but just keep looking.
