Many mention families who settled early, came together and the origin of the groups. They established mills, churches, businesses, built roads, joined local military groups, etc. and individuals can be mentioned by name. Some states have agricultural census records. In the 1850's, a widowed grandparent might be living with a family who has a different surname. It would probably be a relative. Assume that you have looked at land records.
