I appreciate your response. Unfortunately, I have already called the North Carolina A&T President's Office and the Athletic Department. They acted as if they had never heard of Bill Bell. I emailed the University Archivist at A&T twice and she never responded. I called the Florica A&M President's Office and was referred to the Archives. I called the Archives and they called me back saying that they had no information. They suggested that I call the Athletics Department. I called the Athletics Deparmtment and never received a response. Dr. Bill Bell was a significant figure in black college athletics in his day. I would think there would be some more recent records of him. I just sent an email to the Ohio State Alumni Society. Perhaps that will produce something! There is some info on Big Bill Bell at the Florida web site: Eugene Bragg died in a tragic auto accident following the 1935 season, but his successor, William "Big Bill" Bell, would usher in what is now regarded as the Golden Age of Athletics at FAMU. The Golden Age . 1930 to 1970 With the advent of Ohio State graduate Bill Bell onto the FAMU scene in 1936, the Rattler Football Program was ready to become the outstanding program that it is today. Bell led the Rattler program to its' first conference title in 1937, followed by an undefeated season (8-0) and its' first Black College National title in 1938. In fact during his tenure, Bell would pilot the Rattlers to three national titles, clearly establishing them as one of elite programs in football. Bell departed for service in World War II in 1943 and after two years of struggle, Alonzo Smith "Jake" Gaither, an assistant under Bell, took the reins of the program and proverbially speaking, the rest was history. Do you know his middle initial or where he was born? Was he born in NC? If he enlisted in 1943, there should be a WW II record for him. I'll help you if I can. ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <NCGUILFO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 24, 2007 11:22 AM Subject: Re: [NCGUILFO] William "Big Bill" Bell > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: jc319 > Surnames: Bell > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.guilford/4275.1.1/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > Thank you for the suggestion! I've "rescued" a group of old photographs belonging to the SUBLETT Family. The first is a photograph of Mary E. SUBLETT of Longmont, Colorado which is printed on postcard paper and addressed to Mrs. Elizabeth SUBLETT in Big Springs, Kentucky. The photograph was likely taken in the early 1900's with Mary appearing to be about 7 years old at the time. Attached to the postcard is also what appears to be a school photograph of Mary as well, with her likely about 4-6 years old in this photograph. The third photograph is identified as J. T. SUBLETT and his wife and was taken at the W. J. Moore Studio in Greensboro, North Carolina. This photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with the couple likely in their 30's or 40's at the time it was taken. The final photograph is one which is unidentified, that of a young girl about 6 years old which is dated Sept 21 1929 with no photographer or location identified. Based on limited research I was able to locate two possible matches in census records as follows: 1910 census of Town of Manganola, Otero Co., CO: Robert J. SUBLETT, age 48, divorced, born KY, parents born KY, Driving a Team Mary SUBLETT, dau, age 17, born MO, parents born KY/MO Valena SUBLETT, dau, age 16, born MO, parents born KY/MO 1910 census of Thomasville Township, NC: James T. SUBLETT, age 38, married 2 years, born KY, parents born KY/TN, a Chair Factory Laborer Myrtle SUBLETT, wife, age 29, married 2 years, born NC, parents born NC I am hoping to locate someone from this SUBLETT Family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or if you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

He was born about 1910 in Georgia, the 5th of 9 children of Thomas Henry Bell (1868-1926) and Maggie B. Adrine (1879-1927. His family moved to Akron, Summit, Ohio around 1915. I forgot to mention wills, estate records, deeds on occasion, court records, newspaper records, etc. There is more than one way to get at the answers you need. Some of the material from old Guilford newspapers are in the NCGenWeb digital archives. Go to the website below and start digging around. But remember that the search engine for my website does not give you results in the digital archives. That requires a separate search engine for the digital archives alone. North Carolina did not start using birth certificates until 1913, so anything prior to that time will be in church or Bible records. Tombstones on occasion.... And remember that there are/were a lot of Quakers in Guilford County, and their records are wonderful resources. Death certificates also were not started in NC until 1913, so the same applies. You will have to rely on church and Bible records and tombstones between 1771 and 1913. Some marriage records, deeds, etc., are online. If you will go to the website below, you will find a link to the county Register of Deeds office. Negotiating that website can be a little tricky, but you will find the available online records there. I am interested in the story, Norma. I believe that I descend from Francis Worth who moved his family from Nantucket to Guilford County before the Revolutionary War....can't help but believe that these families were traveling together.
