On this site you can select the state and you will get a listing of newspaper articles on various natural disasters there. I saw one back in 1860 for NC. The Guilford County Genealogical Society has published a catalog of Buffalo Presbyterian Church cemetery burials. You can order it from their website. It is protected by copyright, and therefore no one can copy that list and publish it to the web. These publications are a major source of revenue for the county society, which publishes an excellent journal, and I do not want to infringe on that in any way. Also, it is a firm policy for USGenWeb not to violate copyright law. I would never even consider doing that, anyway. The only way to post something to the web that is protected by copyright is to get written consent from the copyright holder. The county NCGenWeb site also has a page of people who do look-ups, and one of those individuals should be able to help people with that publication -- or any of the other GCGS publications on cemeteries. GCGS has quite an extensive list. We are fortunate that this county has cemetery publications, as I have ancestors in counties where there is nothing available on burials. If someone compiles their own list of cemetery burials independently, by visiting the cemetery and copying down the data on the graves which interest them, that can be posted to the web, either through the county NCGenWeb site, or through your own website. Some of the BPC burials have been put online, and the Guilford County NCGenWeb site has a link to that partial list. There are two ways to go about submitting data and photos for posting through NCGenWeb. One is to submit them directly to the NC Tombstone Transcription Project, which does accept photos. Go to this link, read the instructions provided, and then go to the state page and find the link for the person in charge of Guilford County: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/ You can also transcribe burials by visiting the cemeteries, and then I will post that information, if you will assure me you did not get the information from a catalog, directly or indirectly. As for photos, considering the population in Guilford and the tens of thousands of burials in the county -- in fact, I would guess it would go into six figures -- I simply cannot manage something that handles any and all photos. I am sensitive to the fact that this is something that website visitors want to find, and so I have been giving consideration to a new project for the Guilford County NCGenWeb site that would post all data received in an acceptable manner (gathered independently and not copied out of a copyrighted publication), but my intent at present is to show photos only of the oldest graves -- which would be of the most value to the largest number of descendants. Otherwise, the county project could get out of hand very quickly. NCGenWeb's Tombstone Transcription Project is willing to take any and all photos. I will issue a message through the Guilford mailing list (not the message board) when I am ready to launch this project. This will not be within the next week, as we have a family wedding coming up, but it will probably be within a month. I need to determine what date limits I want to set on photos. I will probably start with a narrow limit, to see how many submissions that draws, and then enlarge it by small increments in the future -- feeling my way with it. I had been thinking of setting up a special page, titled something like "Pioneers of Guilford County," which would have photos of all very early burials, regardless of the cemetery where they are. And there may be links to short biographies and portraits (where available) of those individuals. I know it is hindsight, but when I take pictures of stones, I take a tablet along and jot down all the informaiton and the frame number of the picture so I can match them up later when a picture is not clear enough to read all of. I also draw a rough map of the cemetery and where in it the family graves are. It saves a LOTof retracing your steps later. I have never heard of an 1832 tax list for Guilford. I know of a partial 1813 list, and there is an 1815 list -- which I am working to put online later this year (no look-up requests, please). And there is an 1829 list that was published in the Guilford County Genealogical Society's journal in this issue: Vol. 12, No. 2, Winter 1985 (Issue No. 28). Back issues of the journal can be published from the society through their website: _http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgcgs/journ.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgcgs/journ.html) If you have a family's tax receipt from 1832, it does not necessarily mean that the associated tax list survives today. But you can check with the courthouse at Greensboro, the state archives at Raleigh, and query the mailing list -- as you have done. If someone knows of the whereabouts of such a list, I certainly would be interested. None of the earlier (1700's - 1812) tax lists for Guilford survive, which is a pity. But sometimes county clerks threw things out because they did not see any further use for them. And we had invading armies through the area during the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, and that kind of thing tends to be rough on courthouse records. Hi everyone, This is a shot in the dark, but here goes: My great-uncle HILL, who lived most of his adult life in Greensboro (ca. 1930-1980), took many home movies and photos of family reunions beginning in the 1920s (yes, I checked and home movie cameras became available in the early 1920s). About 20 years ago, I was lucky to get a glimpse of some of them when his son brought them to a family reunion, and I thought about asking to get copies made (at my own expense, course) "one of these days". There were moving images of my grandfather and great-grandparents, and great and great-great aunts and uncles whom I had never met. Time flies and... 6 years ago I ran into my great-uncle's grandson (my 2nd cousin) at a family funeral. I asked him about making copies and he said his mother (his father had since died) had developed Alzheimer's and had apparently thrown the big box full of old movies and photos away "a few years ago". To the best of my knowledge she lived in Greensboro. So here is my plea. On the wild chance that someone somewhere came across this box sometime in the last 10 years or so, opened it, and rescued the contents, I would dearly love to get these back, at least get copies made. There were written lists of who was in each film. The surnames would include HILL, WILLIAMS, RICHARDS and STOKES, among others. The dates of the movies would begin at least as early as 1929, perhaps 1926. Other than Greensboro, the locations included Washington, Georgia, Augusta, Georgia and possibly Atlanta. Thank you for listening. If anyone can help or has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. Juliann No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
