Well, I take that back. It isn't John or Joseph. But,on all of the pages that I looked at, the only one that I didn't see wrote out is Isaac. Could it be that? Hi everyone, Can someone look at the 1810 census and tell me what you think the name is on 156B, about 6th from the top, ?? Brown..........Thanks ........Bob
I read it as Jas [or Jos] with a raised "s" [which you can't do in e-mail to these lists] indicating it is an abbreviation [James or Joseph]. There is another Jas/Jos about 10 names down from that one, 3 on the next page [157a], another 3 on 157b...... Rick Saunders

Can anyone tell me anything about these two HERBIN men, e.g. their sibs or parents. Leonidas HERBIN, age 38 NC & Georgia age 30 NC in Greensboro, Guilford Co., 1920 Felix HERBIN, age 46-NC & Louise age 40-LA & kids Marian 6-SC & Bennett 2-NC in Greensboro in 1930. He was a machine mechanic. I am having a very frustrating time sorting out these families because of the repetition of names in every generation in every family! Know what I mean? Thanks very much. In the Guilford Co. marriages there is another Frederick Smith who married Yeona Kimbra on 8 March 1827, bond by Abraham Cook, w. Jno. G. Hanner. In the 1800 census, there is a Frederick Smith is living next to an Andrew Smith who is much older, and also a Robert Smith who might be a brother to Frederick, or some relative. In a land warrant dated June 7, 1799, a Michael Will purchased 40 acres on the Reedy Fork bordered on the north by Frederick Smith. Frederick Smith and Samuel Fulton were chain carriers to survey the property. There is only that one entry for Frederick Smith in the land entries book. There are a couple of entries for Andrew Smith, north side of on Reedy Fork, issued 1787, which again leads me to believe that perhaps Frederick was a son of Andrew? Could Andrew have died and left the land to Frederick by 1799? Nothing concrete, of course, but it's a place to look. mk ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jannine Coble Gregory" <jgregory8@austin.rr.com> To: <ncguilfo@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 09, 2007 3:29 PM Subject: Re: [NCGUILFO] Fw: Frederick Smith > I have Frederick Smith b. 3-6-1812 the son of David Smith and Margaret > Shoffner/ > Is this the one? > > -----Original Message----- > From: ncguilfo-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:ncguilfo-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mary Ellis > Sent: Sunday, September 09, 2007 2:59 PM > To: ncguilfo@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [NCGUILFO] Fw: Frederick Smith > > Did this Frederick marry a Clapp. I found this in the Brick Church > Records. I heard an interview with author Joanna C. Scott on NC TV (UNCTV--Book Watch) recently. The author of a novel explained how she researched her book, explaning how she uncovered many facts (as background) about race relations and social conditions during the Civil War in Piedmont NC. I found the book at my local library. I can't say that this is a great novel but I found it interesting in the historical detail about social conditions and race relations, especially since a large portion takes place in Salisbury, where much of my family lived during the Civil War. It was not a pleasant time there with many shortages and the townspeople torn between pro-war and abolitionist factions in the late stages of the Civil War. It also touches on Chapel Hill, Gold Hill and the gold mine, and a little on Greensboro. In case you do not like fiction, you might want to read these pages about life in Salisbury itself. pp. 167-167; 221-227; 250-261; 270-279; 295-303 General readers might want to read the whole book, which I found interesting. Whether you want to trust the historical research, it is up to you--as is true with any work of history, whether fiction or non-fiction.
